This is the amazing breakers yard in the Californian desert where airlines send their ageing aircraft into storage while a decision is made whether to scrap them.

The Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville is home to more than 100 passenger jets from giant four-engined Boeing 747-400s to the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 with its distinctive three-engine configuration.

Airlines send their surplus aircraft to the arid 'plane graveyard' in the desert for storage as the dry conditions are ideal for storing the aircraft.




Some of the planes are returned to service. Others are sold on to third world airlines.

While the remainder are stripped of all their valuable parts such as engines and other components to keep other jets in the fleet airborne. The remaining aluminium is then recycled - often into beer cans.

Some of the jets are slowly dismantled piece by piece until the remainder of the airframe is scrapped and recycled, possibly into drinks cans.

In this remote field in hot and dusty Arizona sits the Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter, with no rota and a broken tail wing, but a fascinating story.

It was the last aircraft out of Vietnam at the end of the war, just before 8am on April 30 1975. Known by its mission name, Swift 2-2, this CH-46 lifted the remaining 11 members of the Marine Guard off the roof of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon just before North Vietnamese tanks breached defenses on the outskirts of Saigon.
