I think I'll throw in the towel soon . . .In the meantime, here's the "solution" I got. If nobody else figures it out just tell your junior one to pick A and E. Here's "why".

Example 1:
8 × 32 = 256
8 + 32 = 40

2 + 5 + 6 + 4 + 0 = 17

Example 2:
7 × 3 = 21
7 + 3 = 10

2 + 1 + 1 + 0 = 4

Just when I was smiling to myself that I'd figured it out, I tried it on the questions and none of the answers fit!

Why I said my best bets are A & E for the two questions is because:

Question 1: I chose 14 because

14 × 7 = 98
14 + 7 = 21

9 + 8 + 2 + 1 = 20 (Its a multiple of 5, and no other answer using this 'method' gives a multiple of 5)

Question 2: I chose 26 because,

10 × 42 = 420
10 + 42 = 52

4 + 2 + 0 + 5 + 2 = 13 (26 is a multiple of 13, and no other answer there is a multiple of 13).

Tell them to hold on to that until someone smarter than me comes up with a better solution
