The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on yesterday urged the National Assembly to ensure the Federal Government withdraw from the Organisation of Islamic Conference and other religious bodies.

CAN said this at a gathering of prominent Christian leaders in the country at the Shepherdhill Baptist Church, Obanikoro, Lagos.

Media aide to the CAN president, Adebayo Oladeji, in a statement said the gathering condemned the plan to lead Nigeria into the Islamic Coalition Against Terrorism through an executive fiat. It also urged the National Assembly to prevail on Northern states to issue Certificates of Occupancy to churches in the region.

In his words:

“CAN calls on the National Assembly to compile the list of all organisations that Nigeria belongs to and all the treaties signed with a view to dropping all the religious ones. “That we declare the inability of the state governments to pay workers’ salaries and allowances as and when due as unacceptable and call on the federal and state’s governments to work together to address this.”

It admonished the Federal Government to “stop the untimely death of our people and medical tourism abroad.”

It condemned the failure of the security agencies to stop the murderous Fulani herdsmen from their criminal activities. The gathering also demanded the revival of the Nigerian Inter-religious Council.

Those who attended the meeting includes President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye; the Presiding Bishop, Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo; the General Overseer, The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Archbishop Mike Okonkwo; and former CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor.

This body should not be taken serious again, Jonathan as a christian attended IOC, no condemnation or agitation to leave IOC was raised against him by CAN, why now putting unnecessary pressure on Buhari because he's a Muslim?

That's cos problems is raised where there's none. I see no reason why religion and ethnicity should be a problem but cos of some politicians's greeds and to score flimsy points, it has turned to what we're being divided with.

Seconded. Religion should be made absolutely separate from the state. This means,Nigeria is a secular state under an all-encompassing constitution that is binding on every citizenry. Therefore in essence,she should not be affiliated or be in alliance with any religious organisation(within or outside it's territorial borders).






America realized this many years ago,thus it is enshrined in their constitution.

It is naivety like this on the part of Armenian Christians that led to the complete wipeout of millions of Christians in Turkey. And you know the amazing thing is by the time they start with all of you. Uk, France, USA etc would not come to your rescue. Islam is 75% a political ideology and 25% a religious one, hence those of us who are actually with brains know best not to allow Islam into our politics Or we would be sorry.

True, anything that has to do with govt should never have a religious colouration. Govt must be secular especially if we are living in a state that is populated by two different religions. The govt should engage with secular organizations and bring about meaningful development. Any relationship we have with any Islamic nation should be a bilateral one and should end there. Any multilatera islamicl association is however a no no.

This thing was not done today. Where were CAN when this was done or do they suddenly realize what was done. Will be glad if this will be effected but I don;t see it coming to pass in this present Islamic regime? It may have been possible during GEJ time but CAN and co were busy wearing bling-bling upandan chasing shadow so to say...
