Poultry farmers at the ongoing Nigeria Poultry Show in Abeokuta, Ogun State, say activities of smugglers are crippling the poultry industry in the country.

One of the farmers and immediate past President of the Poultry Farmers Association (PAN), Dr. Ayoola Oduntan, said 75 per cent of the frozen chicken in the country were being smuggled in, which according to him, was killing the industry.

He said at present, chickens worth N2.5bn produced by local farmers were stocked in cold rooms nationwide without market.
Oduntan, who said people answered the call by the present government to go back to farm, regretted that the same government was failing to protect them from the hands of smugglers.

“You see, because of the smuggled chickens, chickens grown by local farmers don’t have enough market and there is a limit to which they can grow, so most of them are dying in the farms because of excessive weight,” he said.

He called on the government and other stakeholders to ensure strict enforcement of the existing law which bans poultry products importation. Also speaking, the new President of the association, Mr. Ezekiel Ibrahim, who lamented the activities of smugglers, said the association would collaborate with government at all levels to protect the industry by curbing the activities of smugglers of poultry products in the country.

The National Vice President, South West, of the association, Prince Bode Adetoyi, appealed to relevant government agencies to save the industry from the hands of smugglers whose activities he said threatened the survival of the industry.

This farmers are becoming more of alarmist.

Were do they see imported chicken for Christ sake?

Despite how difficult they have made it for people to enjoy chicken meal in Nigeria so they"re still lamenting?

Allowing Nigerians to dominate any market is becoming more dangerous by the day, do to greed.

Cement price have escalated because Dangote is in charge.

Nigeria is indeed a large market.
With all the frozen chicken produced from Ota Farm we still import.
Damn.

I feel for them though, imported chickens will for now be cheaper than the locally made ones. Due mainly to the high cost of running a business in naija, especially electricity.

You have said it all. Nigerians are crazily greedy with little or no regard for the poor man on the streets.

Frozen chicken costs less than live chicken but it's even expensive to preserve a chicken. Shylocks they are.

An import-dependent economy is no economy at all.
Expensive local item is better for the economy than a cheap
imported one.

Flood the market with local poultry products and it becomes unprofitable for smugglers. When local supply can't meet demands in terms of price, quality and quantity, there will always be market for smugglers.

Me too o! I don't even trust anyone that is frozen. My madam simply goes to farms or markets, buys chicken and ask them to roast it.

Most of those imported frozen chicken are not safe. Many are preserved with chemicals that are not safe for human consumption. Some of those chickens are suspected to be genetically modified

They are not safe. Agreed. But what do you expect a man that is hungry to do? Listen to your lecturer on genetically modified food or what? No, he doesn't care. He is hungry and wants to eat.

Food preserved by whatever means for a long time is not even safe. The farmers should stop making live chicken expensive.

I think the problem is that it will take a while to "flood the market". The local producers actually cannot meet demand. Our local farmers will need assistance in terms of investments and experties to increase production of these chicken. I tot of the option of accelerated growth of these chicken but if my experience in South Africa is to come by, Nigerians will not eat any "enhanced chicken"
