No fewer than 24,000 applicants to the University of Lagos who scored 200 marks and above will still be unable to secure admission in the institution in the 2017/2018 academic session.

The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, gave the indication at a forum with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that although 32,000 applicants to the university scored 200 marks and above in this year’s Unified Tertiary matriculation examination (UTME), Unilag would not admit beyond 8,000.

Bello said that the university insisted that an applicant must also score at least 40 per cent in Unilag’s post-UTME before consideration for admission.

“We know what goes on in our public examinations. That is why we insist on candidates undertaking our post UTME and scoring at least 40 per cent,’’ he said.

But on a serious note that's just 25%. It's a pity 75% of the students won't be admitted.....

Some of these students are hell bent of going to UNILAG, when some other universities will practically be begging them to come!

Sadly, he is somewhat right. Just a bit exaggerated.
Too many of UNILAG students have no business in the university. Its no surprise they paid their way through. Nevertheless, UNILAG's status as a genuine citadel of learning is unchanged for those who came for the purpose of education.

UNILAG remains the University of first choice and the Nation's pride.

8k students that's too small couple with the fact that it is a first generation university, Ahmadu Bello University zaria admit around 11k yearly, and that is possible because the facilities are been expanded by the university itself and it's alumnus, l.e a building worth 80 million Naira was donated to the department of political science, hostels been built by state governments etc

These are candidates with 6 credits in O'level at ONE sitting and scored above 200 yet some universities admit less than 150,accept candidates with 5 credits at two sittings!
