I began watching Monk some days ago. (Interesting and funny show I should add).

There was this particular episode (Season 1, episode 10) which had among its star-spangled features this 63-year old Nigerian long distance runner, who also happened to be a small-time celebrity.

One of the first things which peeved me about this episode was the name of the said Nigerian athelete. Which tribe in Nigeria is someone named "Tonday Mawaaka?"

At first I thought perhaps it was some bizarre pseudonym, or maybe "Tonday" was just a fancy alternative of "Tunde". But what about "Mawaaka"? Surely that sounds Zulu or Xhosa?

Then again, they showed this Tonday Mawaaka in another scene wearing what supposedly is his "native dress", except that it looked like nothing no tribe in Nigeria wears. (Again, it looked more South African than West African).

Now, let me present to you, the crowning gem of the morbid cultural misrepresentation of the entire episode:- Tonday Mawaaka (the so-called Nigerian athelete) said "Amandla" as a parthian shot to Adrian Monk.

"Amandla Ngawetu" means "power to the people" and was a popular phrase used as a rallying cry during the Apartheid days in South Africa—used especially by the ANC (African National Congress). The leaders of the ANC would shout "Amandla" (“power/courage”), and in response the crowd would yell "Ngawetu" (“to us”).

So what kind of Nigerian athelete does not bear a name endemic to a tribe in Nigeria, does not wear an authochthonous Nigerian dress, and chooses to motivate Adrian Monk with a trite South African shibboleth?

It's obvious the producers, the directors and the scriptwriters failed to do their research. Whenever I see a blooper of this sort, all I can think to explain it is "laziness", and a very costly laziness in fact (especially since drama is meant to be “a book in 3D”). I also find such to be patronizing and condescending.

I thought it was still a good episode in general, but that teeny-weeny bit of detail almost ruined it for me.

That's one thing about these foreigners, some of them even think Africa is a country grin

They're always misrepresenting nigeria in TV shows, this isn't the first time sef, o watched one where the guy had a shitty Kenyan/Rwandan/Ugandan accent.

He suffers an extreme case of germaphobia. His likewise extreme case of OCD and the death of his wife also helped in aggravating his condition. He's hilarious though. At times with the funny manner he acts he resembles Mr. Bean.

Don't mind those Europeans and Americans. They don't even bother or care enough to learn about the rich nuances among the various countries and tribal groups in Africa, and so to make up for that wanton laziness in cognition, they opt to box a myriad collection of black humanity into one pathetic and incongruous category. (Easier to generalize than to grapple with specifics).

It's only the ignorantly parochial ones that make this mistake though (unfortunately there's preponderance of them even in this age where information is cheap and easily accessible ), the ones who think their country and continent is sitting at the centre of the universe.
