Good day all. Kindly give insight. My toyota camry (orobo) 1996, began flashing O/D off on the dashboard some days ago and the transmission became very slow.
After checking the Overdrive botton severally, I approached a mechanic who said the gear has gone bad and should be changed. I sought for another opinion from another mechanic. This one claims it's the brain box that should be changed.
I don't know which to believe. The second seems less convincing. Advice needed pls.

What's the state of the transmission fluid?

There is a second button on your gear lever, do press it again the O/D icon should stop flashing.

It's good. I even had to change the fluid and clean the filter.

Ok. Have the transmission solenoids and their wiring checked, preferably by a gearbox specialist.
A general mechanic might cause you unnecessary expenses. I've been there.
