Leonardo da Vinci's long lost portrait of Christ 'Salvator Mundi' has sold for a record smashing $450.3 million on Wednesday at Christie's in New York more than double the old mark for any work of art at auction.

The painting, which once sold for just $60 at auction, fetched more than four times over the Christie's pre-sale estimate of about $100 million.

'Salvator Mundi', Italian for 'Savior of the World' was purchased by an unidentified buyer bidding via telephone after a protracted bidding war that stretched to nearly 20 minutes at the New York auction house.

Salvator Mundi, an ethereal portrait of Jesus Christ by Leonardo da Vinci which dates to about 1500, has gone under the auctioneers hammer.

You self come fail am...... All dis people are from that east African part and Asia... There is no Argentine or Puerto Rican in DAT descendants I mean are u tryna say DAT those people all migrated to America and formed the continent when non of there traditions relate to what even Egyptians or Ethiopians even Pakistan or Iraq people are practicing today..... Remember these nations I mentioned have long been in the bible even Italy (Rome) is in Europe which if u check is close to east Africa(Egypt, Libya ) and other Asian nations so they in no way travelled across the globe to american continent

WizAkzy:
Nonsense. How did he know That was how Jesus looked like. If the painting had the real skin color, it would never be sold for quarter of that price. Jesus was never white, don't let the media deceive you. Go and do in depth study and research.

You are very wrong. That is a ridiculous and even immoral application of money.

We well understand that its the name of the artist and history behind the work that pushes its value (because other than that any roadside artist can replicate the work)... we also understand that it could be an investment.

None of these facts take away the immoral absurdity of the excess involved, given the amount of desperate need in the world.

well, there are different levels in this world and what looks superficial to you is ordinary to others. if you were giving a private jet at this moment, how would that make you feel and think? very superficial right? some other folks own 3 or 4 and own normal passenger airplanes and its a normal thing to them. there is a hotel at Zurich, at the moment, there is an Arabic royal family there and they have been there for 2 months now chilling, they brought their cooks, maids and everything via cargo from abu dhabi to Zurich. guess how much it costs to stay in one room per night? $5k. they have been there for 2 months now. is that normal to you?

With an occultism hand symbol and a crystal ball, this picture will definitely hold more meaning for secret-member groups than just a fancy representation of Jesus

The same economic benefit of a bank vault.

To preserve wealth. As well as to fuel a huge economic sector that employs people.

When you become wealthy, you can choose to keep all your money in the bank at let inflation eat your wealth slowly, invest in stocks of companies that may go bust during the next inevitable recession, or invest in a 1,500 year old work of art that was once sold for $60.

In Nigeria, the most expensive fine art by Grillo is worth over 25m. Ten years ago, it was less than 5m. In 25 years, it'd definitely be over 100m, as Nigeria's economy grows bigger and the number of art buyers and enthusiasts increase.

ogbiwa:
People questioning why someone would pay that much for just a painting, you don't understand that these things have now become more than just art. An original painting by Da Vinci himself is currency. These are assets. The worth is in the value that the painting holds, not the painting itself. The Mona Lisa's value has been pegged at "Invaluable". That means there's no amount of money offered in the world that can buy it. And it's by the same Da Vinci that painted this one. You think he's buying it to beautify his living room? Except he lives in a highly guarded fortress and even at that he won't cos you dont want to know how many international art crime organizations that would be after that painting. Do you know how many attempts have been made to steal the Mona Lisa even in a heavily guarded museum? So the owner is not just buying a painting but also a means to store up wealth, just like people who buy large diamonds or gold and store them in bank vaults. These paintings of high value could also act as an item of power and influence. And no, they're not buying because it contains any "codes or maps".
Exellently put!
