According to the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, education graduates would soon start a one year internship programme, aimed at improving the quality of teaching Nigeria.

Speaking in Abuja a meeting with North Central zone stakeholders, Registrar of the TRCN, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye disclosed this was part of the proposals tabled at the special Federal Executive Council meeting on education on Monday.

Ajiboye said: “Part of the things we are trying to look at in the Federal Ministry of Education, which the minister is proposing, is that we are going to have a one year internship programme for teachers. If you can have houseman ship for medical doctors, why not a one year internship programme for would-be teachers."

“So when they finish from the internship programmes they can be registered as professional teachers."

“Also, there is a proposal to reintroduce bursary award for those who are reading education courses in colleges of education and the universities to make sure we are able to attract best brains to teaching profession.

“The minister is also trying to propose that those who have education degree instead of starting them on grade level 8, they should be started on grade level 9 to make the job competitive and make the teachers feel confident about their profession.

Ajiboye said that the national assembly was amending the name of the council to "Teachers Regulatory Council of Nigeria" to fully capture the organisation's duties in regulation of the teaching profession.

This will be nice. It gives the profession credibility, but will Nigerians adhere and be truthful to the scheme?

it will never happen as long as you keep paying teachers peanuts.

if you like make the teaching courses free in schools, it will never attract best brains in this country

and how much are they paying the so called level 9 teachers.

what a sordid joke

Please dont forget the word 'to'....
It shows that it is a future tense that might not be implemented like other programs under this adninistration...
Examples
Federal government to produce pencils in....
NADDC to produce electric cars in Nigeria

So calm down and enjoy the word 'to' and its effect in modern day Nigeria

Fantastic, anything that will stop making teaching profession an immediate getaway from unemployment as viewed by most teachers is very welcomed.

Teaching profession should reinstate passion and soundness as its main prerequisite once again.

This is interesting....... Teachers are the backbones to
successful countries. They help in teaching morals, values,
history and guide the young ones in whatever part they
choose in life. This young ones when groomed well turn out
to be positve powerful forces in the society. A country with
good and happy teachers will surely flourish.

I hope they carry It thru.
Teachers are si poorly remunerated all over the world, and that's a shame.
With these new proposals teachers will be on the path to true professional success that they so dearly deserve
