Hello NLander,

I need advise urgently, I really don't have a wonderful profile but I'm seriously looking for funding.

I had my first degree in Petroleum Engineering
UG CGPA - 5.5/7.0
WES Unofficial GPA (last 60 hrs) - 3.51/4.0
GRE Score - 301 (Q159, V142, AW3.5) Terrible I know
Work experience: 2

I saw that the GRE requirement for MSC in PE at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette is 285. I saw that one can apply for a PhD in Systems engineering with concentration in any of their engineering options with a Bachelors. Does anyone here think I have a chance? I would have applied for their MSC put it seems with PhD, the chances of getting funding is higher. Someone who know about this school should pls advise.

I'm actually not interested in PE anymore, I'm more concern about funding. In fact, if I can take any program related to my field so long I can get funding, the only thing it will cost me is the time to tweak my motivation letter to suit the field.

I am also considering MSc in Environmental engineering at Purdue University and University of Massachusetts . The application deadline for the former is 15th Dec so I need to act fast. I just need someone who probably have idea of this schools to either encourage or dissuade (so I won't waste the application fee) me from experience.

Finally, looking at my terrible profile what does anyone advise? I know it's difficult to tell, if I one can get funding in most these schools. But if one is to take a risk, take a risk where you have chances. I need someone to make recommendations for this confused fellow.

Thanks a lot.

Your profile is not terrible. It is not fantastic either.

There is no point dissuading anyone as it is case by case. But I think Purdue is a reach for your profile. UMass is it Lowell or Amherst? The latter will be a reach for your profile. You can try Lafayette for a direct PhD and more schools in the B- C+ C categories for that PhD.

Package your app well as your Q score and GPA are good and just sell yourself very well. Use msinus.com to get the schools in the grades I mentioned afore. PhDs are competitive because of the funding but if your profile is really strong for the school you are applying to, you stand a chance.

Funding simply implies; We really want you to come to our school to study and contribute. We see value in you and feel you would add something special to our program and school by extension. We don't want to lose you to another school. Please, pick us.

Now the question you should ask yourself is, what factors can make any school come to that conclusion about someone?

That is what I am insinuating. smiley

Thank you very much, now I understand. Love the way you broke it down. You suppose be lecturer

I wrote my GRE today & it was below par.
I prepared majorly for the verbal & AWA section as I was confident in my quant.
My score -V150 Q167
I even had a better powerprep verbal score of 156. I just couldn't concentrate on my RCs. It was painful sha.
Now focusing on other parts of the application process.

I will tell you what I told my Q170 friend; the V hardly matters. Only MIT, Stanford, CALTECH etc will care about it. I beg you, apply to GaTech for direct PhD. Try Austin, Boulder and then maybe another safe school. You would get in.

With that GPA and Q score? Are you kidding me?

Congrats man.

BTW, GaTech have rolling admissions so no need to fear. I read about someone who applied Dec 9th and was bounced Dec 16th or so. Something funny like that. He does/did not have your profile though.

Congrats. I wish you did better in the Q (not because this is bad - it isn't - but because I know you can do better owing to your Manhattan score of the same 160).

All the same, huge congrats.

I really appreciate ur input on this thread, you are one of those I look up to here. Sent my scores to Boulder, would surely apply to GaTech as u advised.

BTW, wishing other prospective test takers best of luck.

What other 3 did you send the score to?

Don't have any doubts. Just make sure you know what you want to research on and then make your searches in-tandem with it.

I have looked at many Q score cutoffs for top engineering programs in the US - especially for ChE and perhaps only 2 or 3 schools asked for 167 and above. Then your GPA on the 4.0 scale is 100% above 3.8/4.0. I would even say 3.9+/4.0. I know your other aspects will not be found wanting.

The only reason that V score can't count for MIT, Stanford and CALTECH is because other applicants will submit that Q score or higher, as well as higher V scores. But as for the rest of the top 50 engineering programs, guy, you would get in. Quote me.

Of course, I am no member of the adcoms and luck is a huge factor too. grin

Hello and good evening scholars,

It has been an interesting read so far.

My name is Gift, I recently graduated from Uniben with a GP of 4.84/5.

I intend doing a direct Ph.D in Canada starting fall of 2019. I have downloaded the materials for GRE preparation but don't know the best time to take the exam. I don't also have any school in mind except University of Toronto and British Columbia, both for a Ph.D in sustainable energy systems.

Please, I need all the guidance I can get.

Thanks a lot.

Thank you Boss....Just when I taught, my profile can get me nothing seeing mind blowing GRE scores here. Kept me wondering why I couldn't do better. I was going to try UMass Lowell, I got my scores sent there and I was shocked to see that their GRE requirement for environmental engineering was my exact total score. But from what you've said, I'll look into Amherst instead.

I'll go search for schools in the B- C+ C categories. Thanks one more time

The scores I am seeing here though. It is scary as I do not even looked prepared as such but I am motivated to excel. My test is next week. A quick question. Do engineering or science test takers get Three Quant sections? My friend said it does not happen as they are more likely to get three Verbal sections. Verbal section is not easy for me, to be honest. Congrats to those who took their test today.

Thanks a lot.

The best time to take the exam is before the fall season which begins around August. Since you are considering 2019 then all your preparations should be geared towards August of 2018. That way, you can be done with everything concerning your apps by October of that same year and by Jan-Mar, would have heard from all your prospective schools.

Canada is a great country with very accomodating immigration policies however, it is not as funded as the US.

I would advice you to consider the 2 Canadian schools you have above, and then atleast 2 more USA schools.

For Canada, you must get a go-ahead from faculty before applying and making them reply you is quite difficult because they are very GPA-centric. You have the GPA they want though so no fears.

As for USA, hearing from faculty is recommended but not absolutely necessary. Besides, with the time you have, if you practice well you would knock the GRE out of the park and that way (coupled with that GPA), you would more than likely get 2 solid offers in top schools that would fund you for the whole duration of your program.

I see you are in the sciences and most science programs are well-funded, so maybe you should put all hands on deck to crush the GRE once and for all. You still have alot of time to find out schools that work for you and if you are not serving (even if you are but will be done before July) you could still get fully funded to the USA to travel this fall 2018.

Some deadlines will extend to March for really competent people and your GPA gives me an indication that you foot the bill.

What is the overall profile?

315 is a good score. Do not feel deflated at all.
