It is an algorithm that works randomly. My first GRE I had 3 Qs and in my 2nd, I had 3 Vs.

I am an engineering grad.

Please from your experience can I get list of schools with full funding. I have a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering with a cgpa of 3/5. I'm not selective, any school will go.

The best time to take the exam is before the fall season which begins around August. Since you are considering 2019 then all your preparations should be geared towards August of 2018. That way, you can be done with everything concerning your apps by October of that same year and by Jan-Mar, would have heard from all your prospective schools.

Canada is a great country with very accomodating immigration policies however, it is not as funded as the US.

I would advice you to consider the 2 Canadian schools you have above, and then atleast 2 more USA schools.

For Canada, you must get a go-ahead from faculty before applying and making them reply you is quite difficult because they are very GPA-centric. You have the GPA they want though so no fears.

As for USA, hearing from faculty is recommended but not absolutely necessary. Besides, with the time you have, if you practice well you would knock the GRE out of the park and that way (coupled with that GPA), you would more than likely get 2 solid offers in top schools that would fund you for the whole duration of your program.

I see you are in the sciences and most science programs are well-funded, so maybe you should put all hands on deck to crush the GRE once and for all. You still have alot of time to find out schools that work for you and if you are not serving (even if you are but will be done before July) you could still get fully funded to the USA to travel this fall 2018.

Some deadlines will extend to March for really competent people and your GPA gives me an indication that you foot the bill.
Thanks a lot for everything. I suggested 2019 because I'll start my service next year May to finish May, 2019.

I don't have any ideas on schools in the US as their immigration policies have made it difficult for people to go there quite recently.

I think I'll love to study in a place where I can choose to remain when I'm done with studies, and Canada is a perfect fit.

Albeit, I understand you quite well, I would advice you not to use hearsay to come to your conclusions. Do your investigations/due dilligence on your own then make a choice.

There is a life after getting the PR for example.

Cheers.

What other 3 did you send the score to?

Don't have any doubts. Just make sure you know what you want to research on and then make your searches in-tandem with it.

I have looked at many Q score cutoffs for top engineering programs in the US - especially for ChE and perhaps only 2 or 3 schools asked for 167 and above. Then your GPA on the 4.0 scale is 100% above 3.8/4.0. I would even say 3.9+/4.0. I know your other aspects will not be found wanting.

The only reason that V score can't count for MIT, Stanford and CALTECH is because other applicants will submit that Q score or higher, as well as higher V scores. But as for the rest of the top 50 engineering programs, guy, you would get in. Quote me.

Of course, I am no member of the adcoms and luck is a huge factor too. grin
Thanks,
I sent to LSU, U Toledo & U of Waterloo (though GRE isn't a compulsory requirement here, I sent it to give me an edge smiley ).
I have interest in polymer engineering/nanotechnology, what do u think.

@scholastic16 et all, thanks for the invaluable submissions you guys make here ,pls I have some dumb questions to ask, pardon my ignorance , the priority deadline for funding for the school I intend to apply to is FEB 1and the next available date for the GRE exam in Lagos is FEB 4 and I will need to write TOEFL 2 weeks after, my question is will the school accept my test scores and consider me for admission even after the deadline....

lastly, does any school fund Ms fully at all? cos the closest to full funding (accommodation, free tuition and probably monthly stipend) I've seen for MS EE is out State tuition waivers and assistantships. I've been doing a lot of research lately on schools with funding for MS electrical engineering with FEB 15 - March 15 deadline but none seem forthcoming , some have passed through this road hence recommendations are highly welcome...... Thanks.

What do you suggest I do?

I suggest you consider what I said above;

1. The 2 Canadian schools and atleast 2 US schools.
2. Investigate which will serve you better - financially, careerwise and so on.
3. Draw your own conclusions.
4. Study and practice hard for the GRE and if you're financially up-to-it, take the TOEFL as well on or before Oct 2018. Get your SOP ready and have your LORs and resumé on standby.
4b. Decide whether you want direct PhD apps or M.S apps (I recommend a mix of the 2)
5. September/October of 2018, apply to your schools.
6. Jan/Feb/Mar of 2019 you should have heard from most if not all of them.
7. Make plans to travel July/Aug 2019.

To me, Canada is better for working-class people in Nigeria frustrated with their situation and seeking greener pastures. The chance of getting a PR that could aid schooling (thus paying lesser tuition than Internationals), job-getting and settling augurs well for such people. However, for young, vibrant, super-intelligent Nigerians who are ready to compete, US is a better destination for you.

For one, for STEM courses, you have a chance to get an additional 36 months OPT (post grad work permit). Second, with a PhD you are not constrained to Academia alone. You can work in Fortune 500, 1000 companies especially in their R& D depts - many of which will not employ anyone - let alone an International student, who does not possess that PhD. Third, as a PhD you earn more than the other academic cadres because that degree is treated as a premium. Also, on average, Americans earn more than Canadians. Fourth, with Trump as POTUS and the increasing difficulties associated with getting companies to sponsor the H1B (work visa), PhDs appear to be the only group pampered, isolated and exempted from this madness.

This should not detract from the fact that some master's degree holders can get all these things I tabled above. However, it is ostensible that PhDs benefit more from it overall.

As you can see, I have given my personal opinion but I have tried to back it up with facts I garnered in the course of my research. You can do yours, see what you come up with, and make your own decisions based on it.

Cheers.

I think your choices are safe which is good, but I need you to add 1 ambitious school and 2 more moderate schools.

You are a top-notch candidate. Do not fear. UToledo should be for M.S. You could get fully funded for their MSc program. I know getting direct PhDs is not easy these days but you just have to believe.

I am not saying MIT, CALTECH, STANFORD. But some places like Santa Barbara, Delaware, GaTech, Wisconsin, Ohio State, North Carolina State, TAMU college station, UMD college park (top 50)etc. You can truly compete especially the last school on that list.

Please, check if they have what you want (they should, nanotechnology is huge for our course) and see if you can chat with some faculty (Grad coord) to see what funding is for M.S and PhD. Apply. You would get in.

Your question is not dumb.

The school will accept your scores etc but will not treat you as a priority deadline applicant. Some schools are more accomodating and will treat you as one if you have paid app fee and submitted the app (even if you are still waiting for GRE and TOEFL). However, some others will not and only deem you early if all the test scores and app fee have been submitted on or before that deadline. So contact your school's grad coord to know which one the school falls under.

Yes, precisely some do but it is hard and competitive. I know Cleveland state sponsored some M.S fall 2017 EE applicants so there is that. I know UA Fayetteville sponsored 1 or 2 M.S applicants even on NL but not for EE. I know LSU and Wyoming funded some M.S candidates as well. I know the top schools barely fund for M.S apart from MIT and the other top 50s could, but it is uber-competitive.

If you really want that M.S funding, you may need to set your gaze on the B-rated (between 70- 130 schools).

I have a lot of nairaland dm or pm, whatever it's called. For years now I don't know how that dm or pm works I just keep trying replying the mail till and it sends an error, and whenever I try sending nairaland dm back to the person it says you've sent too many anonymous messages.

Long story short, contact me via my email. I'll respond faster that way

Good morning guys, how are you doing?

I am very impressed with the GRE scores flying around in the past few days, congrat to u guys.

On the other hand, I have been able to apply to 4 schools out of 5/6 ( Stevens,Auburn,UT Austin and UC boulder) , getting recommenders to submit their recommendations is really a daunting task and its making it look as if my pursuit for higher education is impertinent. Albeit, I know it will end in praise.

I read on this thread that we can send our GRE/TOEFL scores via BY Mafit at a cheaper rate, unfortunately, effort to contact them proved futile. Can someone kindly tell me how I can go about sending my scores via BY Mafit, it's really urgent. biko

They have numbers online - 4 of them. Call.

They will most likely ask you to deposit N8k for each school you want and then send them a text stating the school's GRE code and dept you want to send it to, together with your ETS username and password.

If you have a MasterCard, use it to pay for your TOEFL as it is cheaper that way. FirstBank charged me N7340 for my TOEFL whereas BY MAFIT would have charged me N8000. But GRE, BY MAFIT is cheaper because you pay the same N8000 whereas FirstBank would have charged me N9909.

The cheaper way is paying through people that are in the USA, I've made a couple of payments for people, but I presently don't need naira. Unless it is given freely. But my boss sends GRE and toefl score, just for people that are '' fanimorous'' at a cheap rate, I'll ask him if it has been fully commercialized.

But, why don't y'all pali with fall 15,16,17 guys and the old folks they'll be really helpful. Paying app fees at rates lower than the official and those centers, because it's annoying giving western union, box pay and the rest your 5$ as a poor graduate student. They can also help in paying for stuffs like insurance, sevis, bla bla at good rates, trust me y'all need to famz small. Some good folks on here literally walked me through every process and are still guiding me here in the US.

If you have a MasterCard, use it to pay for your TOEFL as it is cheaper that way. FirstBank charged me N7340 for my TOEFL.

I have been trying their numbers since morning but its unavailable. I will continue trying it.

I have MasterCard for GTbank and Zenith bank, are their rate similar to Firstbank's? If so, I can spare some few naira to send the scores ASAP

This also works if the people over there give you good rates to exchange naira for dollar.

If they accept N360 for $1 for instance, that is better for TOEFL than using one's MasterCard because it amounts to N7200. But that same rate is still more expensive than BY MAFITs so it depends entirely on the rate.

You know today is a public holiday. Maybe they did not work today.

I think the rates should be the same because they are regulated by CBN. But you can ask your bank to know the current rate (it flunctuates day by day) but on average it has been N367/$

I paid using 355 for most folks. That's what we get from most companies even lower 354,353 with commission, so in helping others I stay at that range and I know a couple of people that does too, I know someone although in Nigeria, pays for people with 357.

I had GRE today and my score was not so fantastic,
Total Score: 323
Quants: 167 (had 170 in my first attempt)
Verbal: 156

I will post a detailed guide for quants when due, though I did not score a perfect score in Quants this time but I know the strategies are helpful because I sat for the exam on empty stomach, thanks to Oshodi guys that assisted me in keeping my wallet grin and 167 is not bad in that kind of condition. I have learnt lot from this page and is time to reciprocate the kind gesture.
