hello all, i graduated in 2009 (about 8 years ago) with a bachelor of physiotherapy degree. I intend to do my masters in canada, getting admission for a masters in physiotherapy seems to be difficult as i need to find supervisors first and they are always unavailable. i have decided to find a course that is health related and quite relevant to my profession (health informatics). three schools - Dalhousie, victoria and waterloo. i want to know the best time to start applying because they all seem to have only september intake |

Just found this thread and it's quite good. Please I want to study in Canada for my Masters (research based). Most universities require that you get a supervisor before you can be considered for admission. I've heard that getting a supervisor can be quite tedious. Please how do I secure one easily? Most of the Canadian schools do not require GRE but the info on this thread suggests that it's best to write so as to increase your chances. I've been prepping using the Princeton materials, is it ok? I'm hoping to get in by Fall 2018 so want to start now so as to be fully ready. |

sassy92:I will suggest that you go through the websites of potential schools that you are likely to apply to. Look at the profiles of their professors and send the professors whose area of research match your research interests emails. I will suggest that you use a gmail to send out these emails because based on experience, emails sent through yahoo end up in the spam of most professors and they may not check their spam mail. As regards writing the GRE, I will suggest that you send an email to gre.nigeria@yahoo.com to request for GRE materials. There are better materials than the princeton materials that will be shared with you via the dropbox. Please note that not all programs require that you have a potential supervisor. So I will suggest that you do extensive search and also send emails to potential supervisors. I hope this helps, Regards |

I'll be sending you a mail straightaway to request for the materials as per the GRE. God bless u for your kind heart. |

Please my question is; who can best give me an acceptable academic recommendation for masters application, aside my undergraduate lecturer? I am having a hard time requesting for recommendations from my undergraduate university lecturers because I have exhausted my chances of them recommending me to schools (through filling the online recommendation letter) since 2015. Yes,I have been applying for admission since 2015 and I am still applying. Please can someone help me out on this. I have close relatives in the US who have reputable jobs(a high school principal, a Nurse and a pharmacist) whom I can use as recommenders. I don't know if it is advisable I use them. I am also looking at requesting for a reference from my boss at my work place in Nigeria. If that would also count? Please help thank you. |
| Re: Studying In US And Canada Faq's by dafemlions(op): 4:00am On Sep 19, 2017 |
vivianharmony:Hello Vivian, Your relatives or people outside your department would not be credible enough to give you reference because it will not carry enough weight to justify your fitness for admission and funding. Your boss in office could be a good one if you are working in a discipline related to your undergraduate course and he can say a lot about your academic potential such as research capability (if your job is research-based). Apart from this, your best and most credible references that will increase your chances are your lecturers. I will encourage you to try your lecturers one more time. However, it is important that they give you excellent references because references counts a lot in the admission process in North America. Using generic languages in your reference letters may be why you have not been admitted and funded. The references needs to be specific and mentioning some of your achievements (while in school) in the references could be a plus for you. mentioning you relative position (such as she graduated top 1% of her class) in class could also be a plus. I hope this helps, Regards |

I graduated 2011 from secondary school, already had a degree but thinking of starting over at a Canadian university. what i am worried about is the gap with my waec result. |

Hi Nice job you are doing here. My enquiry goes thus...... I am a graduate of Dentistry from a Nigerian University.I intend to apply for masters in public health at some Canadian Universities. The issue is this. My class of degree is unclassified. I mean we don't use GPA. How do I determine if I meet the minimum requirements for a masters in public health in Canada. Wes is an assessment platform but most of the Universities in Canada do not require a Wes assessment. The only want you to send a copy of your transcript and they will assess themselves. But I don't want to send in my application and pay for the application fee without being able to determine if I meet their minimum requirements. Also as a graduate of health Sciences (had a final year theme course in community health) do you think I stand a better chance to be admitted considering the fact that other disciplines apply for mph in Canada? So many questions but let me leave it at this for now. You are doing a great job attending to these enquiries. God bless you Thanks |
| Re: Studying In US And Canada Faq's by dafemlions(op): 1:44am On Oct 06, 2017 |
akinsondan:You can always start all over. However, you need to be able to justify that long gap because the admission committee will always want to know why? For example, some people drop out of school to take care of family, some may have other issues like crime that took them to jail and after coming out of jail they want to continue their education, some may have family issues that makes it difficult to afford the cost. Different cases requires different consideration. For example, no school will admit someone who is a s*x offender because such a person will pose a threat to the security of other students. As a result, you need to be able to give a good reason why you've been out of school for that long. I hope this helps |
| Re: Studying In US And Canada Faq's by dafemlions(op): 1:51am On Oct 06, 2017 |
FirstTImeUser:If the school requires your Original transcripts, then send it to them. On every transcript is an explanation or the interpretation of the grades. So once they go through your transcripts, they should be able to place you on their scale. I will suggest that you try to calculate your CGPA based on the regular Nigerian CGPA scale. Once you pass the 2:1 mark, you will definitely pass the 3.00 GPA. I hope this helps |

Thank you for this detailed information. I have a quick question, I currently paid for my wes evaluation and I'm also about to apply to the school of my choice in Canada. I know I have to put application fee and from your write up it seems I won't have to send another transcript to the school I'm applying to since wes already has all my documents. But I need a little bit of clarification and I wouldn't like to share it here, dp you mind if I send you a direct mail? |

Thanks a lot dafemlions for the counsel and guidance on abroad study. I am really inspired. Please do Canadian and US universities now offer Post Graduate diploma? I am chemistry graduate with a result of 2.2 and i would like to switch to an engineering field. |

ewa20buredi100:To the best of my knowledge, US and Canada do not offer post graduate diploma. As regards switching to an engineering field, It is not impossible but you will have to come in for chemistry Masters and then proceed to a Ph.D after your Masters. During your Ph.D, since you can take an average of 3 classes per semester, you can then take 2 classes in Chemistry and a class from engineering. by the time you are graduating from Ph.D, you'll have completed the requirements for Masters degree in engineering. This route seems too long but that is the best way that you can change into engineering without paying out of your pocket because once you get scholarship from Chemistry department, they will be paying for all your classes. An alternative is for you to go for undergraduate degree in engineering. However, getting funding for undergraduate studies for international students is very difficult. I hope this helps |

dafemlions:Thanks a lot sir. What of a Post Graduate Diploma in Engineering from a Nigerian University? Can it still help in pursuing a Masters in Engineering? |
| Re: Studying In US And Canada Faq's by dafemlions(op): 6:47pm On Oct 24, 2017 |
ewa20buredi100:Sure. a post graduate diploma in Engineering from a Nigerian University will do. I do have a friend that just used that to obtain admission although my friend is not in engineering. I hope this helps |

Adeolaraji:BSc and HND are equivalent in the US. I have a friend who used his HND and got accepted directly into a Masters program. I will just suggest that you do the WES evaluation of your OND and HND together. That will be equivalent to BSc here in the US and Canada. I hope this helps. |

ShylockConsults:Hello Guys, As I have always told you, do not let these theives take your money. You can do all the processes yourself. I know we Nigerians don't believe something is authentic until we put down money. However, I will suggest that you give it a trial. Some people have gone to the US just following the directions in this post. Just follow the directions and if you have questions, send an email to gre.nigeria@yahoo.com and I will answer all your questions provided they have not been answered previously in this thread. I hope this helps |
