Agreed, am a living testimony to this assertion. HND and Bsc are not the same or equivalent in the labour market so far as Nigeria is concern so I will not advice any body to be a victim like me except for personal reason like you want to be self employed, then you may need HND knowledge. Be warn. |

LibertyRep:to be honest , what you have just said is the painful bitter truth . But the problem is with time and opportunities , most people who want to go to the university get frustrated when they are denied the chance to do so for many years and only opt for polytechnic as an alternative . i doubt if there is anyone who wakes up in the morning and prays to God that he or she doesnt want a uni degree but HND. the gap will keep getting bigger in terms of disparity between the HND and degree holders as the number of private universities keeps increasing . @OP, EVERYTHING YOU HAVE SAID HERE IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH , I AM SURE YOU ARE TALKING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE |

Personally, I feel poly students are secondary school students that don't wear school uniform. |

Those who need Bsc, Go to NOUN.

beautyfunke:you are getting the op wrong , a university degree will open doors for you that will remain shut for hnd graduates , even those wanting to employ ppl are university graduates , their children are university graduates and under graduates, immediately they see an HND certificate they will just see it an A LEVEL CERTIFICATE , but present a university degree even from the worst university , then they will at least attend to you . concerning fayose , you cant compare his story , when he finished his hnd ,he left nigeria for uk . we are talking about unemployed ppl with hnd certificates hustling in nigeria and looking for jobs |

my brother please stop deceiving yourself and others for certificates are only but papers and can't assure you of good job without connections or God on your side. There are millions of Bsc holders out there searching for jobs with the so called degree. HND is advantageous because the holder are technically trained and are self reliant and always create there own job. HND holders in Engineering field are practically oriented men who don't even depend on there salaries to survive due to frequent maintenance and contract jobs. Certificate is but mere paper HND nor Bsc. Think practical and technical for its not all about the certificate but about the skills cos you can't survive in Nigeria today without skills.... UP HND!!! |

LibertyRep:Spot on a word is enough for the wise. Even in marriage there is discrimination of HND most BSc holders dnt marry hnd holders except BSc, if ur degree is nt BSc with at least 2.2 u will need a miracle like Dino to succeed in life. Actually it doesn't Matter what u studied jst let it be degree. I weep when I see distinction HND holders denigrated and referred to as junior staff to a BSc holder even if na pass degree self in almost all organizations private n public. Well I always tell them dt with Bsc u can become a chief lecturer in polytechnic but u need a PhD to become a lecturer in Universities so d difference is much |

I don't know about others, but for me, i don't think being successful depends on University/Polytechnic certificate. . I believe, if you are the best in whatever you do plus hardwork, determination and the Grace of God, you will be successful. . I have seen where a HND graduate was made head over 1st class staffs and co. . I have seen where a HND graduate conducted interview for 1st class graduates n co who were on queue to work for him. . Your mindset(thoughts), actions and inaction, makes or mar you. Always Be Positive! (ABP) *smiles |

Laveda:Toh, told you this before. I just hope you don't end up thinking you should have even stayed for two years or more, waiting on getting Direct Entry. This is what I see everyday. Anyway, all the best. |

Well it all depends on you.... I'm a product of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, with an HND in Marine Engineering. Bsc, ND, HND, Pgd does not matter in the Maritime sector... In short you are irrelevant if you don't have an OOW (Officer of the watch) License otherwise known as COC (Certificate of competence) it's a license given to you after passing your Orals and written exams from NIMASA. It is recognized worldwide (If you have Unlimited COC for either engine or deck) You can use it to work in any ship in the world as far as the country you are working is in IMO whitelist. You can have an OOW license without having an HND (Though you will be required to have more lengthy sea time experience) A third Engineer with OOW earns 350-450k per month on a ship It's only in Nigeria that employers value certificates more than work experience, It's a different ball game in the Maritime sector (No work Experience, No job) I can't remember the last time i photocopied my HND or my NYSC discharge certificate for a job in a Maritime firm. And what sets us apart from other Engineering students in the university is that you have real hands-on experience and training before going for your licence programme... No room for Quacks!!! PS : My own opinion |

simplebb:Not everything you said is true... It's a good writeup though. I still believe it is about what you can offer... I went to a firm with Bsc holders and a Master degree holder from USA and still ended up the highest paid with my HND. In other news, I resigned and I'm looking for a job |

As for me and my colleagues, we always thank God for passing through polytechnics. No regret for a single second. Because the company we are working with don't descriminate between HND and BSC including OND and NCE that have proved themselves.Even those that have OND/HND get job easily now a days because they don't demand huge salary like BSC and some companies like it to have HND based on their practical experience. |

Sage7:I don't understand. I am an HND holder and i worked in BAT and NBL so the OP's logic does not compute. He is using one or two instances to justify the opinion. The problem is Nigerian graduates do not know how to look for employment. Even if they are lucky to be called up for interviews, most do not have the verbal and mental acumen to survive it. Doubt me? Read through the forum and witness the comments of so called "Graduates". |
