Azura Power said the first turbine of its independent power plant was synchronised with the national grid on Wednesday and began producing electricity for distribution across the country.

The company said in a statement that the event marked the start of a four-month period of intensive commissioning of the 459megawatts Azura-Edo IPP located in Benin City, Edo State.

According to the statement, the plant has three Siemens turbines, each of which is capable of producing 153MW.

It stated that the turbine would undergo a battery of tests over the coming five weeks, adding that the tests on the second and third turbines would begin at the end of January 2018 and the beginning of March 2018, respectively.

The company said the commissioning process would then conclude at the end of April 2018 when the plant is scheduled to reach full commercial operations.

It stated that during this four-month commissioning period, the plant would produce over 100,000 megawatt hours of electricity, which would be sold by the National Bulk Electricity Trading Plc to the distribution companies.

The Deputy Managing Director, Azura Power, Mr. Edu Okeke, said, “This festive season is one of the peak periods for electricity consumption in Nigeria and it’s a source of real pride for Azura that we were able to bring our first turbine onto the grid before Christmas Day.”

The statement added that the project, whose construction began in January 2016, was anticipated to reach completion in December 2018.

It said, “But with the vast bulk of the work already completed, the project is currently more than seven months ahead of schedule. It has also become a standard-bearer for good health and safety practices, having clocked up more than four million man-hours of work without a single lost-time injury.

“The credit for this high-level performance is shared by the EPC Consortium of Siemens and Julius Berger and all the stakeholders in the project, including, among others, the Presidency; NBET; Nigerian Gas Company; Transmission Company of Nigeria; Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing; Federal Ministry of Finance; and Edo State Government.

“The NBET, for example, has a team of engineers who have conducted intensive monthly on-site monitoring of the works since the first day of construction. The NGC has partnered Azura in the construction of the gas spur line that connects the Escravos Pipeline System to the power plant and in the construction of the pressure-reducing and metering station. The TCN has also worked assiduously with Azura in the construction of the on-site switchyard and the connection into the neighbouring Benin-North Switchyard.”

Legacy of Goodluck? Wake up, this is 2017 and not 2014 . Goodluck was busy stealing the huge sum of money he earned from oil, that is why nothing gets completed in his 6 years of office. But Patience Jonathan account, hotels, mansions, Jonathan's farm, Dieziani's mansions, Yacht, etc all got completed...

Na ur ogogoro master commissioned the project? You don't know the difference between initiating a project, funding a project and completing the project. Initiating a project could just be reduced to a wish list. Funding and completing a project is the real work...
