True talk, what about the free thinkers and traditionalist, they too should do as deemed fit.
As long as it isn't against the fundamental human rights of another person.

I also commend the lady for refusing to obey the law of the land and also quit to be called to Bar. It was a new development but I disagreed with Hafsat because of her religious bigotry and unreasonable sentiment. The question is; is the girl in question the only true Muslim in the world? what happened to some vibrant and practising Muslim that have been obeying the statu quo? She should be reminded that Hasfat cannot make her practise her profession unless she obey the law of the land and there is no religious law that is more powerful than the law of the land. Kudos to Law School

Defunct leader, MKO Abiola’s daughter, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, has reacted to the controversy over UNILORIN law graduate, Firdaus who was denied call to bar for wearing hijab.

Hafsat Abiola-Costello is a Nigerian human rights, civil rights and democracy activist, founder of the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy, which seeks to strengthen civil society and promote democracy in Nigeria

Hafsat commended Firdaus Amasa for defending her religion and challenging the status quo in the Nigerian law school. She wrote on her Facebook:

“A law student passed all the requirements to be called to the bar but was not allowed to attend the ceremony because she refused to take off her hijab, which violates the rules of the Law School. “She knew of the rule but because she felt that it was unjust, she refused to comply. By so doing, she has chosen to challenge the status quo.

“If she succeeds, the Law School will change the rule. If she fails, she would either have to comply in order to be called to the Bar in Nigeria or give up her dream of being a lawyer here.

“Wish we would all be like Firdaus in pursuit of the world we want to live in. To stand up or take a knee and speak up against a practice or rule that we do not support. To be willing to challenge the prevailing practice, no matter the cost. After all, the problems we remain silent about are the ones we are condemned to live with.

“As we think of what gifts to give each other during this Christmas season, let us gather stories of the courageous, the stories of the scared-but-acted-anyway to share at our tables. Let them inspire us to enter 2018 prepared to raise our voices about the issues we are concerned about; to push past complacency and complicity and demand change.

“Well done, Firdaus. A lioness can only ever be the mother of cubs.”

I hope nobody will raise an eye brow if a Revd. Father insists that he should be called wearing his cassock and rosary? Hope you will be ok to attend a call to bar ceremony in the nearest future only to see a man wearing a red skirt decorated with cowries because that is what the gods have asked him to wear?

A call to bar in Kenya with CJ in the middle. What is wrong with us as a country?

I wonder what the world would be if we all bring in our religion, believe and other tribal or religious identity into every aspect of life. Native doctor 'll tie his fowl feathers, Ozo title holder 'll wear their cap, Catholic sister their scalf, Muslim sister same e t c

What if some others do not feel comfortable wearing clothes and prefer to go about naked, what will be your reaction? It's their fundamental human right yes?

False sense of importance. Once she pulls through illegality will be normalised. Everyone will then dress how they deem fit. I'd like to see Muric's response to such exercise of 'human rights'.

In which constitution is human comfort a fundamental right??

Deeper life don't allow their females to wear trousers but they never stopped their females from going for NYSC neither did they protest because it's totally irrelevant. It has nothing to do with the faith or where they end up in after life.

All of these people shouting that they should allow hijab based on religious rights..

Is it by force to be a lawyer?... In fact is it permitted in your religion for women to serve as advocates? And since we're splitting beans here. Why is she not wearing the full burka to cover up her face and why are her hands showing?

If she wants to be a perfect muslim, She shld become a full Eleha and go, sit in her husband's house. Awon werey

You are allowed to do and wear whatever you like but if you want to join an organization,
you either abide by their rules or stay in your house to enjoy your "freedom".

It is high time we ignored these extremists when they raise this issue about Hijab on social media, they can wear it anywhere or time but not where it is not allowed or expressly outlawed.

Please let this issue go, next year she can attempt the Call-to-Bar again without the Hijab especially if it is still outlawed. However, the organizer of the ceremony needs to invest in heavy security going forward because this Firdaus lady incited the Moslem extremists against the event and if we go buy the Moslem extremists history, you should know what to expect - Violence.

The day i left the shores of Nigeria was the day i realized our level of fanatism, we tend to overdo eveything we were thought, from Islam to Pentecostalism, Roman catholic , Anglican, name it.

The funny aspect is out here racism will not even let them recognise Nigeria fanatics..no one really gives a damn about Nigerians and our overzealousness!

My advice to that girl is to swallow her pride and remove that Hijab, One should not be a slave to his own religion.

Anyone who believes that there's absolutely no meeting point between one point of view and another is already a fundamentalist...-Wole Soyinka .
The Law School is a leveller for all students of different faiths. As such,no ostentatious display of faith should be tolerated. The school acted right in that course of action. What that lady tried to do,either consciously or not, is to sectionalize the school. If she had succeeded, if would have given ammunition to students of other faiths to display whatever religious symbols they have.In the end,the school would become very divided along religious lines.

U guys should take a short trip outside Nigeria to advice your selfs, even this Abiolas daughter was not wearing any Hijab the day she recieved her own degree, why? Obviously cos she has gotten a certain degree of exposure!

These rules are used to control the poor, the nobodies, and the ignorant.

We might as well say that Uniforms all over the world should be abolished. Besides, having signed forms to accept all the rules only to want to flout them is irresponsible, and she can be held liable for that alone. Rules are for a reason, for without rules we are as good as animals.

If you want to make this about free speech, freedom or religion, you are entitled to your opinion, however, lots of people have challenged her to do this in her religion's court rather than do this in a federal government body. Its not only we all start walking around naked that it will be recognized, that children of these days leave the meat of issues and concern themselves with irrelevant side matters.

MacD contributing his own.

There are Christian females who are vehemently against wearing trousers, they go for the NYSC program and wear trousers for a year! It's the law!!
The one time one tried to wear a skirt, she was kicked out of camp and we didn't hear Christians threaten the nation over that.

Enough already!!!

Trousers is not allowed in Islam too, We were also forced to wear it during Nysc and that is the only time I wore it in my life.

Hafsat should just keep quiet.
She doesn't even believe what she's said, why isn't she as fanatical as her brother.
Where is her own hijab?

The NBA were right with their decision.
Islamic terrorists have unfortunately made the hijab become synonymous with terrorism.
Just like the beret is synonymous with cultism.

I don't see why anyone should have troubles taking off their hijab if they aren't fanatics.
The NBA must not have such people amongst them.

The hijab is a must wear for Islamic women. They must a head covering for their hair.

Let me give you an example.

In Turkey for decades, women were barred from wearing the hijab into government buildings and this included courts. Thrse laws were introduce by Kemal Ataturk who wanted to westernised and modernise Turkey as he saw many Islamic traditions as archaic. These laws were introduced in the 1920's and were enforced up to the 21st century. These laws have however been watered down since the present government of mildly Islamist Erdogan came to power in early 21st century.

He watered down the secular laws and weakened the army, the custodians of these laws.

However, in order to comply with this law, conservative women would shave their hair and wear a wig. Now, their head was covered. Problem solved.
