i believe the system is designed to have you eat hand to mouth, but will give you everything you need, and they don't want you to have big bucks in the bank

Back in the good old days, a single room was £20 per week all inclusive......

Flick the switch 25 years later, the same arrangement would cost about £180 - £200 (location dependent) per week..........

In london, you will get a standard room and not too crowded shared apt for £500 (all inclusive if you have a beautiful landlady cool )

Was always happy to send money home to Nigeria before, just realizing how silly it is now. So i'm less generous

You cant stop that mr man...helping out gives some sort of fulfillment. You just have to be smart with it.

An HMO? Pack una inside like sardines...... £500 * 6 tenants....

6 tenants + 6 bed mates.......... That beautiful landlady, would conveniently save £30,000 in 12 months........

Hopefully, next year, i will save up a mortgage deposit, then i can start thinking about finding someone and having a small wedding

Then their system too sucks you in slowly.... From mortgage to HP, to credit cards, to store cards, to regular holidays .............

Then the avalanche consumes ..........

The way i see it, its the way of life here.
Nigeria has its way of life too
So, its like super-imposing the 9ja way here,
really, what is money for if not to spend on all this.
As long as you are looked after even in your old age, what more do we really need??

Still better, at least an average man has a better chance to hammer than an average person in Nigeria

Shebi you just told me it would be crowded. Why would a hustler go and live in a central business district? You cant spend £600pm on tranport to anywhere if you live in croydon and work in London...this is what I want to prove.

People with families should speak up as well.Would be great to see how others get by especially bill wise.
Childcare is the real money eater..eases up slightly when child is 3,weight off at 5 depending on schooling preferences.
Currently blow thousands on plane tickets flying in family for childcare as agencies here are not reliable and had a horrible experience with a Nigerian nanny.
Have not bought a house yet due to some circumstances, spending 1k pcm on rent.Nice area, good schools. Will buy next year God willing.Have managed to save a good amount for deposit.
Bills 2-4k pcm with nursery fees,council tax, grocery,life insurance,income protection,hair cut and do,children's ISA,childrens extracurricular,eating out,money sent to Nigeria for family,mobiles,fuel etc
My salary is 2.4k, foundation doctor.husband higher earner.
Once we settle,we expect to save way more and reduce bills

Avoid bringing a nanny from Nigeria, at all cost....... Most of them eventually file slavery charges, after crying wolf.......

Bills from Nigeria
150k pcm for both families
School fees for family -550k pa
120kpa part salary gatemans
Cousins, siblings money.by the side -cannot even calculate this one.

So it mounts up like crazy..

We have decided to arrange our finances to allow us make our own investments if not we keep giving out and end up having nothing.

Have landed property, not many.We have decided to build in 2018..so will have to lock up

Just ordinary visit ran into hundreds of thousands cos the things to do to keep our families comfortable were too much..we were so relieved when our holiday ended.

I'm grateful that we are not poor and are able to manage ourselves and keep family happy but the bills are back breaking..

I wonder how other people cope and are able to build so fast and have tonnes of investment.

We have arranged meeting with financial adviser in January .
Is there a thread here for people with families..my problems will seem wierd for a single person.

You guys sending money to Nigerians in Nigeria are not really helping the situation back home.

Which other options are there?
Parents maintenance, grandparents maintenance
Siblings fees Uni
Close cousins who need cash as they are job hunting
Money to help out siblings in a jam
Staff with parents salaries
Jobless close friends cash once in a while
Repairs at home where parents live

It is endless..is there really a choice??

Once we settle in,will definitely look into this.
For now it's family doing shifts for us.No regrets at all as we can go to work without fear.

If the couple are both working. It will be a lot easier to save if they plan well in unity.
The wife's earning can take care of all expenses while the husband's earning will go into family' savings.

Approximate expenses for my family of 3:

mortgage £440, electricity and gas £67, council tax £110, tv and internet £30, mobile phone for 2 £50, annual car insurance and road tax for 2 cars (£1500), fuel cost per month (commute a long distance to work) £300, food (We do African shopping in bulk (buy meat every quarter from abattoir, wash and package per cooking, buy boxes of ingredients) and also buy things in bulk from Costco) average of 300-400, child care cost used to be £500 but now about £200 cos of govt free 30 hour free childcare.

So total expenses for a family of 3 is around £2k per month, which either of our salary can easily take care of and we get to save the rest and the other salary. It will also be easier to support family members in Naija.

So, marriage is not all woes.

Please note that this will only work if you are not hoarding money from each other.

UKmigrant:
All these savings we talk about only apply to single guys with no responsibilities. When you're married with kids in this country, it's a different ballgame. How easy your life would be would depend a lot on what part of the country you live in and what your average lifestyle is. You could be living from hand to mouth for years despite having a stable job.
