On to the question: I suppose some people have got so used to all these carbines and 5.56 rifles, they've forgotten what a proper 7.62 assault rifle looks like.

ALWAYS! Ordinarily people wouldn't even debate the 5.56 x 7.62 mm issue but this is nairaland. Bow down! IIRC,only US based DSArms build new and redesigned FNs like this pistol version.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE COMMISSIONS FITNESS CENTRE FOR FRONTLINE PERSONNEL IN MAIDUGURI

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned a new fitness centre for frontline personnel serving as part of the Air Task Force, Operation LAFIYA DOLE in Maiduguri. The fitness centre was commissioned by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans at NAF Headquarters Abuja, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Muhammadu Mohammed. During the commissioning event, the CAS stated that the fitness centre would afford the officers and airmen/airwomen serving in the frontline the opportunity to maintain a sound mind in a sound body, which is necessary for the discharge of the task assigned to them. He therefore urged them to make good use of the facility to build a healthy state of mind towards more efficiently combatting insurgency in the Northeast. The CAS also seized the opportunity to express appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his support to the NAF and other security agencies deployed to the Northeast.

Earlier, the Commander of the Air Task Force, AVM Idi Lubo thanked the CAS for envisioning the fitness centre project. He added that the fitness centre would encourage the frontline personnel to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which is necessary for excellent service delivery. It would be recalled that the NAF, had in recent times, either built and equipped new gymnasia or renovated existing gymnasia in most of its bases across the country. Of note is the gymnasium, which was recently commissioned in Yola for use by the frontline personnel serving in Yola. The commissioning of the new gymnasium in Maiduguri ensures that all NAF frontline personnel actively involved in the counterinsurgency operations have ready facilities to maintain their physical fitness.

COMMANDER 21 BRIGADE CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS WITH TROOPS AND IDPS IN BAMA

The Commander 21 Brigade Nigerian Army Brigadier General GB Audu, today, 27th December 2017, celebrated the Christmas with troops of the Brigade, sister security agencies, members of the Civilian Joint Task force, Kesh Kesh, Bama Community leaders and some members of the Non Governmental organisations working in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Commander expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the troops in discharging their constitutional roles while urging them to sustain the tempo of the successes so far recorded by always maintaining high level of alertness. He further commended the sister security agencies, Vigilante groups and the community leaders for their continuous cooperation.

General Audu, however visited the Bama Internally Displaced Persons camp where he celebrated with the children and donated some relief materials

We've been buying back from the Zimbabwe Defence Force thousands of the R1s we gifted them back in the 80s. They hardly used them and put them into storage when they adopted the Kalashnikov, though their SAS continues to use them.
In civvie street I'm seeing more and more FNs imported from Argentina. cheesy

I quite like the CZ 806 Bren 2 7.62 and the Galil ACE 7.62 as replacements for our R4 when the time comes. Can't see us licence producing Israeli though, so the CZ will do, and hopefully in 6.5mm Grendel to which I've become a convert grin

Currently, US $11 002,36. For a .50 cal, remember. Outside the US, where can a civilian legally buy a .50cal?

And no, you can't just breeze in and get a licence. You need either SA residency with appropriate competency papers or as a foreigner, permanent residency status with requisite competency papers.
If for example, a Texan wanted to come here and shoot, he'd be able to do so with his Texas licence for 9mm only. For bigger calibres he'd either get the licence in the US or here in SA.
There are very few countries whose licences we automatically accept for all calibres: Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Italy, Switzerland, Austria being the few that come to mind because they have similar laws and regulations to ours.

To conclude the 2017 Xmas /end of year visit to units, the GOC 8 Division, Maj Gen SO Olabanji today, visited 118 Task Force Bn Gudumbali, 145 Bn Damasak, 158 Task Force Bn, Kareto and HQ 5 Bde Gubio. The GOC conveyed COAS end of year message to officers and soldiers. Similarly, he commended troops for conducting themselves well and urged them to remain focused and ready for the challenges ahead. He charged Commanding Officers to undertake "complete assessment of their unit's combat efficiency". Images of the visits below:

Happening now is the is the ascending of the famous Aso Rock by the troops of Guards Brigade Nigerian Army to mark the formation's end of 2017 training year. One unique aspect of It is the presence of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General TY Buratai as Special Guest of Honour. Typical of him, he is also ascending along with Principal Staff Officers of the Army Headquarters:
