to be fair, the housemates are not that bad.

nigerian food smells - we just don't know it.

my wife usually lights up one of those scented candles after cooking just to get rid of the lingering smell of oporoko, dried fish, iru, etc. grin sometimes she sprays airfresher. so i honestly don't blame the guy asking you to shut the kitchen door. another tip is to always ensure the extractor for the hob is on whilst cooking. have you being where Asian food (curry is being cooked). damn! the smell is no bad that it sticks to the wall, curtains, etc. grin

it is not unusual to feel uncomfortable about sharing your utensils with complete strangers.

fire alarm going off is normal thing na. grin that things saves lives and homes. again, keep the extractor on the kitchen hob on while cooking and/or the kitchen window slightly open.

feel free to pop a note on the fridge's door asking people not to eat or drink what does not belong to them.

regarding your washing - set a timer or reminder to get it out from the machine.

at least you do not have flatmates smoking skunk or listening to reggae music at 10pm. grin
You summoned me here by mentioning me, now I'm here. Nice thread though.

True yarns *thumbs up*. I don't intend moving out anytime soon though grin I'm adjusting on somethings but they're gonna have to endure the rest, like my food odour cheesy cos they order funny chinese dishes too sometimes and put in the oven and the smell fills up the house undecided
I remember one of my guy dating oyinbo cooked okro with her pot and put iru...I don't think they are together anymore

Great. Duly noted. Need to start coaching the little ones to be brilliant be dt.
Tbh it's depends on your location. Catchment area is really important. I know quite a few "Not so Brilliant" individuals that attended Grammar schools.

However attending a Public school on a Full scholarship is a different ball game altogether.

Tell me more about interpersonal skills huh Thats what is making my stuff go missing in the fridge?
maybe they didn't even know its your stuff!

Even having flatmates in Nigeria is wahala, even staying with family members is wahala...the real problem is staying with people!!!

When i stayed with an aunt, she would send me out at midnight to help buy cigarettes, bread, sardine in Brixton

Sometimes, to buy foodstuff and ask me to cook it.

She once woke me up at midnight and asked me to borrow her 2,000 pounds!

When you live with people, even your parents, they can ask you to turn down TV volumes/ clean up bathroom, don't use too much water!

Na normal things, Your flat mates are even chill...i heard some have problem with soundtracks they give their flatmates, and some even gang up on a flatmate they dislike....

If you want to improve it, so that next time they drive past you for example on the road, so they give you a lift. Then you need to relate with them better. Its obviously important as you took time to list out grievances isn't it

All these things I listed are things I expect to go through even before I moved to the house. I have no issues and I can live with it.

I don't intend moving anytime soon and I don't need no lift from no one as I know I can buy a good car if I want to grin and can afford taxis too.

I am merely sharing my experience.

I will talk about Nigerian/African immigrants and personal hygiene (mouth and body smell) when I get back from work. It's very important to sort it out if you are a professional working daily in a role that involves conversing with patients/colleagues/customers.

By they way, lovely weather view today in the North East...NOT! grin

Things we have to endure living in a shared house. So far, these are the bullshits I have been enduring:

1. One of my housemates told me to please walk more slowly and gently while climbing stairs as it disturbs her downstairs.

2. One of the bottles of wine I kept in the fridge went missing, my fruits go missing too.

3. One told me to always close the kitchen door when cooking as the smell makes him uncomfortable.

4. A note was left by a housemate to keep the TV volume down between a certain time as she would be doing a nightshift and needed to sleep.

5. Another note on the kitchen sink by one that she doesn't share her mugs, plates and spoons.

6. Constant triggering of the fire alarms almost: everyday depending on who is cooking.

7. Housemates not willing to clean the common areas.

8. Housmates ignoring you when they drive by even when they see you on the roadside in the rain.

9. One asked me, I heard you're some kind of professional, what do you really do huh

10. Most never remember my name grin

11. There is a whatsapp group for us, we're just four in the house, but no one responds to any questions you ?post on it. They're all whites by the way.

12. If you don't bring out your clothes from the washing machine on time, they just evacuate it an? dump on a dirty surface for you rather than tell you even though you just saw each other seconds ago.

13. Waiting to use the bathroom especially in the mornings and skipping shower sometimes to avoid! being late to work.

I'll add more if I can think of anything else.

So it's not all rosy cry

It's good to invest in a range of after shaves, tictacs, mouthwashes.
The last thing you want is for your colleagues to pathogmoniaze your presence with the change in room smell and for them to gossip about it.
Always good for them to compliment you on your after shave, and my my, they're not too expensive. Plus, you get good deals on sales

I really don't get this.
This is normal thing when you live with flatmates.

I stayed with 3 to 5 flatmates, all working , in Victoria Island before i moved here for 5years.

We had people using your stuff, drive by people, if they're close to the house, what if i didn't see them or, as is the case, no convenient place to stop, someone cooking fish, i dislike the smell of fish, people don't clean bathrooms, noisy girlfriends during sex, people eating your food in the fridge, someone used the washing machine, left his clothes there or didn't drain the water, till it stank...etc

It's not because they're foreigners. my brother in Germany has 2 flatmates, an Indian girl and an Albanian, he also complains about her spicy, savoury indian food and messy bathroom

That is flatmate life!

If you don't like it, you pay extra and have your space

But Nigerians also have the in your business stereotype... i think it goes with the territory of house sharing like uni dorms really..

Sharing with a known colleague is better than..2 bedroom flats anything more than that will get complicated and personal. Or rent with other Africans grin
