Do your kids live the snow? How are they coping with the cold?

Thanks. For now, they have limited access to the cold weather. They are always indoors with their Dad while I do the running around.

You got scared Hahaha.

Nogen:
Meeen! The cold got a better part of me yesterday. I came back exhausted!

My house hunt yesterday took an interesting turn. I saw an advert on kijiji about a fully furnished apartment for 750$ a month. In my mind, it's a great deal. I took a taxi to the apartment and I wasn't satisfied. Na wao for these Canadians , they said fully furnished but I met nearly empty apartment. 2 dirty sofas in the living room, cooker, fridge , Internet. That's all. Is this what I will pay 750$ monthly? No space for my kids to play except I take them to a nearby park.

I left the place to a second apartment , managed by the same agent. A 3 and half , better than the first one at 550 dollars a month. Has 2 dirty sofas again. I looked at the environment and said maybe we could manage this.

I then went to look for Service Canada office to obtain my Social Security number. The house agent took me to the mall instead. God works in mysterious ways. I used the opportunity to buy a few things we needed . Was about to call a taxi when my phone went flat. I saw a black guy sitting somewhere in the mall. I approached him and begged him to please call me a taxi that my phone was flat. He asked where I was going to. I told him. He brought out his phone and the next thing he said, " Come , let me drop you off to the place" I was scared. He sensed that and quickly introduced himself as a Malian and asked me where I came from. I said I'm Nigerian. He was perplexed! A Nigerian in Sherbrooke ? You guys go to Toronto and the Anglophone provinces not French!

Then I became relaxed and he took me there. We got talking and he got to know about my house search. He waited for me to get my Number and he then took me to his Caretaker after introducing me to his wife and 2 children. I became totally comfortable. He brought me back to the hotel , met my husband and children. An hour later, he came back and picked me up to see the apartment the Caretaker spoke about earlier.

I fell in love immediately! It has all that I asked for. Large space at the back and at the front, a garage, a storage facility outside, 2 large bedrooms, a modern cooker, big fridge, heater, hot water and a serene environment and I even have a small garden. 5 minutes walk to the Mall, 2 mins walk to an elementary school and a Daycare center. It also came cheaper at 525 dollar a month. The only thing is that we can't move in until the 3rd of January and I have to pay 35 dollars a month for electricity.

He agreed to be my guarantor and the wife is taking me to stores where I can buy stuffs for the apartment at a reasonable rate. He is coming this morning to take me to the Landlord and sign the contract. He is an Angel sent by God to help me at this very critical point in my life. God really works in mysterious ways.

@Nogen welcome to Canada. Initially the kindness strangers would show to you would come as a shock, like scary at first but you get used to it and then pay it forward. $525!! Quebec is really cheap oh.
And by the time she'll visit Nigeria again she'll be shocked at how rude we are. Lol

Just curious, it's hard to get a green card in the US? I've been seeing this thread lately. From the U.S to Canada.

Unfortunately, yes it is.

I'm guessing that maybe the population of the US compared to Canada might be one of the factors why getting ones permanent status in Canada is easier than the US.

It's very easy to get a canadian PR nowadays. As long as you are young, have a post graduate degree or 2 academic qualifications plus high ielts scores. The US has plenty of people with this profile. The last person I know that made the reverse move this year (i.e Canada to US) got Canadian PR as a back up plan but dumped it not long after she got a residency position at a hospital in the US. She is a medical doc. with a masters degree obtained from the US.

Worried and curious! Please for how long can one delay sending one’s passport upon PPR request to ACCRA? Has anyone successfully done this before with good reason?

Also is it possible to send one’s passport from another country due to travel(I.e. America) whilst other family members send theirs from Nigeria?

Please advice and share experiences accordingly . Thanks

@oohunt, I've been meaning to mention you on here as it's been a while you posted. Welcome to Calgary in advance. As advised Burlington coat factory. Get thermal wear for yourself and the kids. So layer up. Like a singlet, thermals, shirt, sweater then jacket with a hat. Thermals or fleece lined tights, pants and fuzzy socks then winter boots. This week has been cold in Calgary and as salford1 says when you land it'll be warmer but iunno if it'll be as warm for you. Lol!

Was supposed to attend a wedding in Brandon a few weeks ago but could not make it due to other commitments. There are lots of Nigerians in that city. I know 3 families back from 2012/2013 living in Brandon. 2 came in as PR through FSW (later attended the local college), and one came in as a nursing student(Brandon Uni), now a PR too.. Since they have all made the small city their home, i.e. got jobs and bought homes, then I am guessing the city is nice..

At -39, you are expected to be at work, kids are expected to be in school ( except if there is a snowstorm) and life goes on like nothing is happening... that's the Canadian spirit

Thanks for your prompt and honest answer. I was initially worried because I hardly see Nigerians applying to Brandon University or PR holders moving to the city.

I'm thinking one should be able to move to another city after studies or simply try another city altogether.

Thanks for your help.

grin It's hard to believe people survive in that weather but they do. That's like 5 times colder than London in winter.

I have a quick tip for those of us that are landing this winter.
Especially if you will be using the public transport, either temporarily or on a regular basis.
This tip is borne from my personal experience.

1. Understand Google Map
Download it on your phone if you don't have it already. Learn how to use and interpret the map. It is one of the most essential tools to waka for here.

2. Understand the Transit system
If you are going to a place and you use google map to ask for direction, you will be given a range of options for your transit. For those of us that will be using the bus, you will be given walking direction to the nearest bus stop and also the bus(es) ID/Number you need to take.
For example you can be told to take 40 Northbound - 40N bus. Please don't take 40 Sounthbound - 40S bus o. I did this a few times before getting used to it. It is also advisable to note the bus stop you are going to stop because the buses no get reverse.
In fact, also note the bus stop before the one you are going, so that you will have ample time to pull the rope.

Also, at the bus stops/stations, always make sure to check that you are at the right spot. Sometimes you will have many stops around same area or different platforms in the same station. Imagine waiting for a bus for several minutes only to see it going in a different direction. It is painful o. Sometimes you will have to wait another 30 minutes or more for the next bus.

3. Planning / Management
Planning is a survival skill here o. No one wants to spend 30 minutes in a -35c temperature waiting for a bus. I have been there. No matter how much khaki you put for body, it is never pleasant. It is essential that you plan your route. Before leaving the house, check with google map the available options for your transit. Consider the travel time, the number of buses you need to take and also the range of bus choices for each option. I would advise that no matter which option you choose, don't get to the bus stop/terminal earlier than 5 minutes to bus arrival time.
It is best in most cases to choose the option with the least number of buses so that your lay-over time will be minimal. You should also consider your bus choices. This means that for a single route, google can tell you that you can take bus A or bus B or bus C, this should be your favorite choice especially if that is for a connecting route, because that means that if A doesn't show up in time, you can take B or C.

4. Capping it all
We have come from a tropical weather condition, it is normal that our body will not be suited to the condition at first. Always dress as warm as possible. Don't copy some other people o. Wear winter socks, if possible double it. Wear thermal underwear especially for the legs, get a long john. If you don't have long john, wear at least 2 trousers. Wear winter shoes, winter jacket, head warmer, and good winter gloves. Also, be careful when walking on snow. Avoid the black/dirty ones, walk on the white snows. Stay safe. It will end in praise.
