The great thing about the Gelegele port plan is that it is tied to the massive industrial park which is already being built. And the industrial park is tied to AZura power plant which has been fully built. And the AZura plant is tied to the presence of a gas pipeline hub in Oben that connects much of the gas in the Niger Delta to the rest of the country.

So yes, I think the hegemony up North would try to prevent this from happening, but the Governor is smart and has Dangote heavily invested and we all know that anything Dangote touches moves with speed. So yes, this will see the light of day.

OP, the Gelegele seaport has been in the pipeline for a long time. Hope the project sees the light of day. Is there a motorable road to Gelegele from Benin. Also does the govt have any intention of rehabilitating the Siluko River Port . It was really a very useful port when it was functional and immensely boosted the localeconomy of the Iguobazuwa-Siluko axis. It also provided alternative means of transportation of goods from Lagos to Benin back then.

The beauty is that the Gelegele Port is not built with imports in mind but with exportation of manufactured Agro/ Allied Produce.
The port is tied to the N200billion Benin Industrial Park which is already being built.
The park is tied to the 1000MW AZura power project. The first phase of 450MW has been test run and would be ready for commissioning in a few months.

Sir, do you have a precedent for what you claim? I mean, was there a state governor in the SS and SE that commenced the building of a port but was frustrated by Yorubas and Fulanis?

Lagos port belongs to federal government and the revenue generated from the port goes to the federal government.

in the south/south

Nigerian government have seaports in delta state mainly used for petroleum products export

in rivers Nigerian government have ports in onne and porthalcult, also mainly used for petroleum products export because of its design

in calabar, the port mainly serves the navy

Lagos government hardly profits directly from the seaports

Tinapa and ibom seaports just like the gelegele seaport does not belong to the federal government.

Most of those seaport are small in comparisons to the Lagos seaports and are designed to aid the export of goods from the state or region it is located.

It is really for the benefit of the economy of the region and Nigeria as a whole

Yes Obaseki is a different breed of politician, he is what I call techno-politician. He his not your regular politician, that is why he has been able to achieve all these in a little over a year in office. Regular politicians share state resources amongst themselves first and whatever little that left is sprinkled on substandard projects that are often not completed. With Obaseki, there has been no such sharing hence everyone including the politicians are looking for ways to be productive, which adds much value to the state. At the rate Obaseki is delivery, one will be forgiven to think the state budget is up to halve a trillion naira.

You are funny, that was the port the European used in most of their trade with the Benin Empire starting around 1485AD. There is a BBC documentary on YouTube about this port and the Benin European relationship done in the 1970s. This was the route that was also used to established the Lagos monarchy about 300 years ago. It is estimated to be less than an hour journey by boat from the port to Lagos.
