2018 will be an interesting year for many of us and a good year for many Nigerians in shaa Allah.
We want to turn the whole country into a construction site; Roads, bridges, railways and rail stations, housing etc.
There will be human capital developments. Our Social Investment programmes will go into overdrive. 500,000 Npower, we will ramp up the
numbers of school pupils to be fed to over 10million, we will disburse interest free loans to additional 500,000 beneficiaries, we will scale up our cash transfers to about 700,000 people. All these will have tremendous ripple effects on the economy both rural and urban.
The cooks we pay directly to feed the kids in public schools will buy the food stuffs from local farmers who in turn are guaranteed a market for
their products.
Say we feed the 1 million pupils of Kano State primary 1-3 an egg a week. That’s 1 miilion eggs every week. It will take a poultry that has at
least 200 layers that produce an average of 3 eggs a day to produce 600 eggs a day and to make it 4,200 eggs a week. With that, you need to
have at least 250 poultry farms of that capacity in Kano alone producing the eggs non stop to get a million eggs a week. If you include the food
for the chickens as well which is about 4 ounces of feed on an average per layer, then you can imagine the ripple market effect of that for the farmer who sells the feed. you are talking of tons of maize to be
purchased from the local farmer. That is the story of what the school feeding alone can do. Not to talk of the rest of the programmes.
We still have a long way to go I know. And some may say, why now? Well then why not? It is always better late than never.
Let’s be optimistic this year for I know there will be a lot of good things in the offing.

FEED BACK FROM THE MEETING HELD BY LAGOS NPOWER COMMITTEE FOR NPOWER WEEK
The committee met regarding the program for all Npower Lagos volunteers. Their discussion was based on the following
- The actual days to be used for the program
- The various forms to used for the documentaries
-The venue to be use and how to get all logistics ready
- The program contents
- Th award to be presented to dignitaries
- Awareness and empowerment talks to carried out by the Nagro and Nhealth members
- Those to handle the various seminars (BOI, Mr. Afolabi & Barrister Ismael)
- Those to be invited for the program
- Generated flyers (both digital & print out)
- The drama to be axpcted by all section of Npower.
On funding the program, it was agreed that funds will be generated from letter that will be sent to Government officials and stakeholder, soliciting for their supports in all forms especially financially. Issue of tasking volunteers was suspended for now.
The documentaries was considered and discussed at length and how it should be carried out. Mrs Yusuf suggested we should not go into something that will cost us much funds. She suggested that each volunteer can take a clip of whatever happens in their various PPAs and send on the media. She also suggested we can get others that can do the documentaries for free and send to the committee to vet and go through it before tagging important officials and putting comments and sending it to the various social platforms and this can be done months to the program and the videos can be gotten online by the IT guys (Among the Volunteers)
She stressed that to get the documentaries and people feeling our impacts, everyone should make at least five or more minute video of their impacts and an interview of their boss in their PPA and it should be forwarded for the committee to approve before spreading it on the social platforms. We are to create pages on social media that will be used for the N-power week and all videos, photos will be displayed
It was also suggested that everything documentaries and videos should be done on districts (Zone) basis. And for the awareness, each zone should select topics and it should be done on districts basis.
The issue of sanitation was agreed to be scrapped out as it might not be visible to achieve.
The N-health and N-agro was suggested to combine and agree on how to go about the empowerment and health awareness for various beneficiaries and community during the week.
On the issue of the award, it was agreed that it should go to those that has contributed positively to the success of the program so far and did their best for the program, which includes:
• Mr Afolabi
• The current focal person (Mrs Kaka)
• The vice president
• The NOA chairman
It was agreed that Blue roof Ikeja should be used for the venue, and light refreshment to be served on that day.
Also, volunteers should be on the same vest different colour (optional)
The meeting was adjured by Mrs Kemi and supported by Mrs Yusuf.
The meeting came to a close at 3:45pm, with closing prayer said by Mrs Kemi and the national anthem recited.

A PIECE OF ADVICE
It is very obvious and painful to see the sudden rise of unemployment rate in Nigeria despite Government massive investment on unemployed youth through social intervention program from which many of us participated and became volunteers through Npower program.
With the current statistics that says over four millions Nigerians lost their job from 2016 uptill date, its vividly becomes very difficult to get a stable job at this time due to dwindling economy in Nigeria. One will also observed that every year, we have thousands of youths graduating from university thereafter looking for stable job but all to no avail.
Federal Government has consistently made it clear that there is no permanent employment after the expiration of this program, that alone became worrisome to many of us who have been dreaming of a time when FG will come out openly and announce that the Government has concluded on permanenting some Npower volunteers.
May I say at this point that the dream can become reality only if we can unanimously key into it. See let's say the fact, federal Government will not openly declare to us that there is huge opportunity for permanency after two years of this program, no reasonable Government will promise 500,000 graduates of permanent employment after this program.
To this end, the bulk of permanency rest on the shoulder of states Government and our impact in our various PPA because we 're indirectly working for them and the questions we should be asking ourselves are;
- Are we adding value to our place of primary assignment?
- What is state of education, health and agricultural sector in the country?
- What effort 're we putting in place to contributes our quota to our community
- The pupils/students that are in our care, how has our life affect them?
- Are we actually ready to work for the Government especially in the harsh economy of ours?
These and many more are some of the question we should ponder on and if we can sincerely answer theses questions correctly judging by our behaviour in our PPA, then sky is our limit. I hereby admonished all volunteers across the federation to vigorously get involved in various activities that have been outlined for the interest of everyone and let the states across the federation feel our impact.
If we can all key into this piece of advice, am telling you, we don't even need to agitate for permanency, it will just come on a platter of gold. I also want to plead with all Lagos state Npower volunteers to cooperate with the ministry and the committee working assiduously on our behalf to make ourselves known to the Governor himself and other Government agency/stakeholders.
This 2018 is our year and we must not let it go until we claim our possession, we are unstoppable and this year political arena will affect everyone of us because politicians will want to use some of us to achieve their inordinate desires, but the choice is ours. Whatever we do between now and December will determine our place in this country. This is the time youths need to rise and influence this Government through inward skills in us. 2018/2019, we ready to shake this country, get ready because the time is now!!!

I am a female graduate of Tai-solarin University of Education, Ogun state with a BSc Certificate in Industrial Chemistry. The forlorn hope about the future started gripping me two months to graduation, driving me to a point of sickness. I came from a poor family not privileged to have the right connection for people like me to secure a job after graduation.
I got sick more and more listening to stories of frustration told by those who graduated before me. Many of them, out of frustration became apprentices to learn menial jobs. Many who languished under inclement weather of bad economy turned to prostitution to eke out life. Many ended up as mere servants in the homes of even the middle class, contending with attendant insults and low self-esteem.
Even those who got supposedly good jobs lament bitterly about poor pay and treatment of ignominy by the agencies who recruited them. Majority of young graduates, I know are still in their parents homes, degenerating by the day. I had prayed every day to God to make my case different.
Yes, there were few privileged graduates who earned good jobs, yet, they could be counted on fingertips, I had hoped to be one of them.
After graduation in 2014, I was posted to Kebbi State in 2015 for mandatory National Youths Service. I love Kebbi for the peace and tranquility it offered, coming from the southwestern part of Nigeria.
Within a year of my service in Kebbi, I opened my mind to the possibility of becoming a rice merchant. This is because, Kebbi by the grace of the Anchor Borrowers Programme initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had become a leading state in the growth of rice. My plan then was to purchase rice in bags and transfer them down south to start a
business as a graduate after my NYSC programme. It was a solid plan, which I would have initiated for others to follow, all things being equal.
Bright as the idea of becoming a rice merchant looked, I had the excitement cut short by my Local Government Inspector in Kebbi, Alhaji Idris who raised the issue of huge capital as the first requirement. I had no idea of how to raise over a million naira to start the business. Yet, I was hopeful. After completing my NYSC year in Kebbi, I returned to
Ibadan, Oyo State to start counting on mother luck to bail me out.
Nothing was forth coming until six months after when my lovely father put a call across to me to intimate me of a programme initiated by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, called N-Power; offer of job
opportunities to 200, 000 young Nigerian graduates.
I did not appreciate the initial efforts by my father to link me up with N-Power. I had always regarded any programme from the federal government in that line, a ruse. My father persisted and had one day referred me to a statement by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo that the programme was real. Osinbajo, in that report, impressed it on young graduates not to waste the opportunity, being part of President Buhari’s
passion to mop up unemployment under his government. Incidentally, he was the Anchor of N-Power.
Owing to ceaseless efforts from daddy, I registered on line for N-Power on the very closing day, just to make him happy! I never placed hope on the efforts because of cynicism and bias I had against anything from the government. But six months after I turned in the application, I heard the
rumour that names of beneficiaries had been shortlisted and published.
Truly, some of those who were shortlisted came back pumping hands and getting pats on the back. It never occurred to me to make an effort to check.
But I did because my father again prodded me to do so. I made the list and it was incredible, very unbelievable! I did not depend on the usual connection or link to pull through. The opportunity came on merit, just like that. Awesome! That was on November 21, 2016. From that day, President Muhammadu Buhari who man

I went for the mandatory screening exercise in December 2016 and was finally selected. I was posted to Ewekoro Local Government area in Ogun State and resumed as a teacher on January 9, 2017. I appreciate the privileged to serve in that capacity. Since joining the N-Power scheme, I noticed that the government has never failed in paying up as at when due, monthly. Now, I reckon with the power and importance of the
scheme. I was able to acquire additional skills and knowledge on Social Development, while also gaining from the study habits of the people through the other initiatives the government provided.
I am prodded to write my experience with the N-Power initiative, first to appreciate the concern by the Buhari’s government had on the high level of unemployment in Nigeria and the need to solve the problem. Most importantly, I intend to use this write up to beg the government for more.
For me, N-Power is a good initiative designed to solve the riddle of life for 200, 000 young graduates and providing hope for them. I urged the government to offer permanent employment to all the beneficiaries while opening fresh avenues for more young graduates to benefit. I make this
appeal because the programme ends this year. Then, it is out of place for the government to throw the beneficiaries into the labour market again, after investing in them.
I seize this opportunity to thank the government of Ogun State under the able leadership of Senator Ibikunle Amosun for being very accommodating and hospitable to benefiicaries of N-Power. His government has promised not to let the worthy beneficiaries down. We will continue to count on his promise too.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, deserves praise because of his
steadfastness in making success out of N-Power. For me, he is the reason the programme was not hijacked by the very greedy and insatiable political leaders, either at the state level or federal.
I end by saying that no matter the machinations by the opponents against the government of President Buhari that means well for the youths, we the beneficiaries of N-Power will always appreciate it for what it stands for. I join others in praying for the continued success of the President and his government.

Imoukhuede gave the advice at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum in Abuja.
The scheme is meant to recruit graduates as teaching assistants, agriculture extension and primary health care workers.
“The reality is, if you take this very seriously, it is a lifeline that we have extended to you to build your employability status; it is two-year-paid volunteer.
“If you take this very seriously, there is no way you will not gain; if opportunity now opens up that the state now wants to engage people, you will be among the top that they want.
“That has happened in Gombe, the governor has extended close to about 700 of them to offer them some permanent employment.
“The same thing in Borno in a particular local government, even before N-power came it has been really graduate volunteers that put themselves together there.
“It was in one of the local governments that was ravaged by Boko-Haram and (they) were alternating to provide teaching.
“Incidentally, N-power helped them, because a lot of them were in the N-power programme, but the governor said that `I want to offer you some position in civil service’.
“He is saying, `can we take them away from N-power to give them some placement slots ?’’
According to him, some state governors have started supporting and strengthening professionalism of the N-Teach volunteers by preparing them for their mandatory teacher development programmes in their states.
He said that Ogun and Borno had started the programmes while some state governors had requested for more deployment of N-power employees because they had been very supportive.
He said that SUBEBs, in their own initiatives, deployed National Certificate of Education (NCE) employees to primary schools, especially where teacher-to-pupil ratios were very low in the rural areas.
He said that SUBEB also deployed BSc holders and other graduates with specific qualification to secondary schools as subject teacher assistants.
He explained that the programme was never designed to take over the place of any profession, adding that some educators had misunderstood the scheme thinking that non-professionals were being used as teachers.
“What we deployed were teaching assistants, their call roll is to support the main teachers.
“We have NCE, OND and BSC; we have quite a lot of NCE holders that have proper qualification for the primary school,’’ he said.

States can ONLY deploy Final Selected Beneficiaries.

N-Power was designed as a Federal Government program to address unemployment of our youth, graduates and non-graduates, to support our artisans and also address the gap in our communities.
We found out that in some states we can have up to 300-400 children with no permanent teacher only if there is a youth corper there but there may be a head teacher. We needed to address that gap so we decided to employ teaching assistants. They can’t be teachers because they haven’t
gone through the normal process.
We sat down with the Ministry of Agriculture who sat down with the private sectors in agric to draw up what their needs are. Our youths are not being groomed to be employed by government. It is about them setting up their own business. So if for two years, you are on a program, you will know where your interest lies. Is it in planting, harvesting, or packaging or export? You have been working there for two years so you
know where the challenges are.
In the health sector, we sat down with the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), and asked them to train them on the modules.
We also have motivational talks on taking charge of your own life, entrepreneurial skills, how to start up your own business, all of it is in that device. Each one of them gets that device.
We then decided to give everybody an open level playing field. When you apply on the portal, you would put in your BVN, your date of birth, your first, second and third name, and your phone Number.
At the end of the exercise, we had applications from over 774 Local governments. Many states didn’t actually believe even though I had briefed the governors on this matter. Very few of them designated business centers for youths to apply for the exercise. We had to use the information we had to do the selection. We decided to take 40 percent of each state application. Those states that were less than 1,000, we added
a certain percentage.
On the issue of Abadan (in Borno State), it was first brought to my notice by Senator Kyari, who is in charge of that constituency. I was alarmed when I saw the names. When you open the portal and click on the local government, the first drop down was Abadan Local Government. My presumption then was that a lot of the people just put it in without
realizing that they made a mistake. We later removed all of those people after a meeting. We then asked for the people of Abadan and found that only six people who actually lived in Abadan had applied. We now filled up the numbers with those that lived around Abadan so that they would be able to go and teach in the schools there.
When they applied, we then conducted tests for those that were in huge numbers. Those that were selected were about 200,000. We sent them texts informing them that they had been selected. We wanted to ensure that their qualifications were authentic and that they could be deployed to the nearest place that they lived. The state now sent back the deployment lists to us.
You recall that there were protests. Some of those protests were in states that were cosmopolitan. We discovered that states had replaced names, put their own indigenes and had dropped those that had actually received texts from us. For those of you who we sent texts to, we would set up a new verification exercise. I told the state leadership that if they
wanted to do an employment intervention for their states, they should use their own money. This is a Federal Government programme. Thus we can’t say that because somebody doesn’t come from your state, he can’t
work in your state. This is how we were able to address and start paying backlogs of people who had not been paid because they had been changed by their states. These are just the practical issues behind the npower

The N-Agro is the most commercially viable. We hope to increase the number of the N-Agro this year. We also have the N-Zed, we’ve entered agreement with the automotive council and we’re selecting 20,000 graduates. We did an audit around the country and that was a long process. We would be paying those N10,000 for training in three months and they would now be interns in government or private owned institutions.
We’ve done the audit of all of that and we’ve done the deployment already. We are targeting a primary and secondary school in each senatorial district around the country but we don’t have the funds yet. We have agreed with the CISCO Academy to train them further. We would be putting in computers for the children to be taught programming, coding, animation, graphics and anything to do with ICT. We encourage them to begin to look at those topics while they’re young. For any government school that has more than 20 computers, we would send these trained ICT personnel to them.

You recall that there were protests. Some of those protests were in states that were cosmopolitan. We discovered that states had replaced names, put their own indigenes and had dropped those that had actually received texts from us. For those of you who we sent texts to, we would set up a new verification exercise. I told the state leadership that if they
wanted to do an employment intervention for their states, they should use their own money. This is a Federal Government programme. Thus we can’t say that because somebody doesn’t come from your state, he can’t
work in your state. This is how we were able to address and start paying backlogs of people who had not been paid because they had been changed by their states. These are just the practical issues behind the npower

The N-Agro is the most commercially viable. We hope to increase the number of the N-Agro this year. We also have the N-Zed, we’ve entered agreement with the automotive council and we’re selecting 20,000 graduates. We did an audit around the country and that was a long process. We would be paying those N10,000 for training in three months and they would now be interns in government or private owned institutions.
We’ve done the audit of all of that and we’ve done the deployment already. We are targeting a primary and secondary school in each senatorial district around the country but we don’t have the funds yet. We have agreed with the CISCO Academy to train them further. We would be putting in computers for the children to be taught programming, coding, animation, graphics and anything to do with ICT. We encourage them to begin to look at those topics while they’re young. For any government school that has more than 20 computers, we would send these trained ICT personnel to them.

This is the major (yes, not that I did not have job of #30,000) reason I applied for NPOWER and thought you guys should have made it your first assignment upon resumption.
Since NPOWER is not a permanent job, coming together to form something like cluster or cooperative and start life from there should be paramount than expecting federal or state government to permanent you.
This is just my thought though.

One of the 200,000 beneficiaries of N-power (the Federal Government’s empowerment idea), has named his new electrical shop after the job initiative programme.
The N-power volunteer is one of the 2016 first batch of the programme which officially kicked off to empower the teeming young and jobless Nigerian graduates.
“Earlier today a guy whom we believed to be an NPower Volunteer shared the photo of his newly opened shop and Named it N-Power Electronic Shop, what a wise way to pick a business name,”
Npower Discussion Group , one of the largest meetup point for N-power programme says.
The volunteer has been able to save part of his N30,000 monthly stipend to open an electrical shop, which will continue to complement his other sources of income. That was the idea behind the programme…to empower the beneficiaries.
Plus the monthly stipend is N-powered tablet devices given to each beneficiary. Market value of each device is between N65,000-N90,000.
The programme is the first objective and fair job recruitment exercise in Nigeria as selection was based on qualification and not on party or ethnic affiliations. It’s a 2-year temporary job, though.
Government jobs are the toughest to get in Nigeria, whose population is nearing 200 million.
N-power was designed for Nigerian citizens between the ages of 18 and 35, and selection was generally based on
→ On volunteer’s expression of a genuine interest in whichever area he decides;
→ Passing the relevant tests;
→ Volunteers’ willingness to push themselves beyond their comfort zone; and
→ Ability to show a flair to develop all the skills they need to be the best they can be.
While there are fixed requirements along the way, the programme relies on volunteers to take “ownership of the process and take the lead in shaping your route, by making the most of the training that you will receive.”
At the initial 2016 registration process, the programme opened for graduate and non-graduates.
“For the purposes of N-Power, Graduate means any post-tertiary qualification including an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) or as may be specified by the programme.”
Another final list of 300,000 verified applicants is underway, while another 75,000 non-graduate applicants (N-power Build) have been directed to update their NPVN details.
What is N-power
“The N-Power Volunteer Corps is the post-tertiary engagement initiative for Nigerians between 18 and 35. It is a paid volunteering programme of a 2-year duration. The graduates will undertake their primary tasks in identified public services within their proximate communities.
“All N-Power Volunteers are entitled to computing devices that will contain information necessary for their specific engagement, as well as information for their continuous training and development.
“In 2016, the Federal Government engaged 200,000 N-Power Volunteers. In 2017, the Federal Government is enlisting 300,000 more. The June 2017 Application is only open to the Graduate Category- the N-Power Volunteer Corps.
“N-Power volunteers will provide teaching, instructional, and advisory solutions in 4 key areas.
“N-Power aspires to provide a platform where most Nigerians can access skills acquisition and development. At this time however, the initial modular programmes in N-Power are designed for,” N-power official website says
