A rural community is stunned and baffled after a dead woman gave birth inside a coffin.

The bizarre “coffin birth” has left some people crying witchcraft after a deceased 33-year-old mother of five‚ Nomveliso Nomasonto Mdoyi‚ of Mthayisi village near Mbizana in the Eastern Cape gave birth.

This was discovered by funeral parlour staff 10 days after her death‚ on the eve of her funeral.

Staff at the parlour in Mbizana‚ were left traumatised by the incident.

Lindokuhle Funeral parlour owner Fundile Makalana said: "We were so shocked and frightened that we did not even have time to look at the sex of the baby. I have been in the business for more than 20 years and I have never heard of a dead woman giving birth."

Both the stillborn infant and the mother were buried in one big coffin on Saturday.

The deceased woman's mother‚ Mandzala Mdoyi‚ 76‚ said her daughter died suddenly after becoming short of breath at her home. She was nine months pregnant at the time.

"First‚ I was was devastated by the untimely death of my daughter and now I got the shock of my life to learn that she has given birth while she had been dead for 10 days. What is that? God please come and intervene‚" said the grieving mother.

Family spokesman Mbikelwa Mpithi said they would consult both medical experts and sangomas to found out more about the birth after death.

"We cannot sit down and fold hands as if it is business as normal. We want to know more about this‚" said Mpithi.

Coffin birth, also known as postmortem fetal extrusion, is the expulsion of a nonviable fetus through the vaginal opening of the decomposing body of a deceased pregnant woman as a result of the increasing pressure of intra-abdominal gases.

Typically during the decomposition of a human body, naturally occurring bacteria in the organs of the abdominal cavity (such as the stomach and intestines) generate gases as by-products of metabolism, which causes the body to swell.

In some cases, the confined pressure of the gases can squeeze the uterus (the womb), even forcing it downward, and it may turn inside-out and be forced out of the body through the vaginal opening (a process called prolapse).

If a fetus is contained within the uterus, it could therefore be expelled from the mother's body through the vaginal opening when the uterus turns inside-out, in a process that, to outward appearances, mimics childbirth.

The main differences lie in the state of the mother and fetus and the mechanism of delivery: in the event of natural, live childbirth, the mother's contractions thin and shorten the cervix to expel the infant from the womb; in a case of coffin birth, built-up gas pressure within the putrefied body of a pregnant woman pushes the dead fetus from the body of the mother.

Why would I lie about such a thing ,there was a stampede at FR ebube mmunoso's adoration ground, some people died on the spot, they incompetent hospital declared even those merely unconscious dead, including my unfortunate uncle, at midnight some of them woke up, started banging at the morgue door ,it was opened and that was when they ran into the hospital.
