Check the file format, if it's a zip file,you'll need to extract the data. You can download a zip extractor on the play store or do it online. After extracting it, it should work.

Upload the file you downloaded on unzip-online.com and then extract the .srt file. That's what you'll now select on VLC for it to show.

You can get the subtitles from subscene. That's where I got subtitles for while you were sleeping and two Cops from.. I almost fainted when I downloaded and saw that it wasn't subtitled.
