89% of Nigerian Universities Fail to Make Top 5,000 in the World - Webometrics by HigherEd: 11:13am On Jan 27, 2018
According to the January 2018 Edition of the Webometric Ranking, out of the over 25,000 higher Institutions in the World and 209 Higher instutions ranked in Nigeria only a handful of 23 Universities (representing 11%)in Nigeria made top 5,000 in the World.

The Top 23 Universities which were led by the University of Ibadan with a Global rank of 1099 followed in Second place by Covenant University, Ota with 2,142 Global rank and coming in Third place was Obafemi Awolowo University.

The Top 23 Universities were dominated by 19 Federal Universities, 3 state Universities and 2 private Universities.

Covenant University Ota remained the Only non - federal university in the top 10 ranking.

On the African Stage the University of Capetown remained number 1 with a 290 Global rank while University of Ibadan ranked 11th place while Covenant University came in at 34th.

Also worthy of note is that the Openness indicator of Webometrics rated the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in the latest edition of the ranking as the most cited University in Nigeria by Universities across the Globe.

In comparison to South Africa, Kenya and Ghana Nigeria Universities were poorly represented in the top 40 rankings in Africa.

The dismal performance of over 89% of Nigerian Universities who couldn't make top 5,000 could mostly be as a result of more emphasis in the Excellence indicator of the Webometric Ranking(which rates the top 10% highly cited researchers in 26 disciplines) which saw Excellence increase from 30-35% and a decrease of Presence from 10-5%.

Methodology of the Webometric Ranking
Webometrics uses link analysis for quality evaluation as it is a far more powerful tool than citation analysis or global surveys. In the first case, bibliometrics only counts formal recognition between peers, while links not only includes bibliographic citations but also third parties involvement with university activities. Surveys are not a suitable tool for World Rankings as there is not even a single individual with a deep (several semesters per institution), multi-institutional (several dozen), multidisciplinary (hard sciences, biomedicine, social sciences, technologies) experience in a representative sample (different continents) of universities worldwide.

Research output is also key topic for Webometrics, but including not only formal (e-journals, repositories) publications but also informal scholarly communication. Web publication is cheaper, maintaining the high standards of quality of peer review processes. It could also reach much larger potential audiences, offering access to scientific knowledge to researchers and institutions located in developing countries and also to third parties (economic, industrial, political or cultural stakeholders) in their local community.

The remaining 186 universities(89%) which failed to reach the top 5,000

As you can see most of the Nigerian Higher Institutions had 5777 score at the Excellence Indicator - which appears to be the worst score any University can get on that parameter. That would mean that much of the research output in those schools are of little use or relevance in Nigeria or the Global research Community

N.B: In Webometrics four indicators bigger numbers reflect low value hence the lesser the number on the four indicators the better.

While Webometrics is a fairly good indicator of research relevance, the promoters of the ranking however advises prospective students to consider other factors before choosing a University to Attend.

For Emphasis the Webometric ranking DOES NOT directly Rank Facilities, Residency, Teacher to Student ratio, Student experience and in the case of Nigeria particularly electricity/water supply and Academic Stability and this is because no Organization can have Vast enough knowledge of over 20,000 universities in the world as regarding those parameters so most ranking site use the quality of Scholars to understand how good a University is.

It didn't take me much to realise why the OP had used 'top 23' and not' top 20'. Now, we can have two private universities on the 'top 23' list without suspecting the OP. Buh where is Statsocial?

No you didn't get it. The topic reads top 5000, OOU is the last university within the top 5000 bracket globally and falls on 23rd Nationally. The idea is to draw your attention to the global rank and not national one.

Is Nigeria itself globally competitive in anything you can talk about apart from corruption? Why expect Nigerian universities to break that pattern of mediocrity to be among the best in the world. Not even your so called top private universities in Nigeria can stand an average university in the West.
America alone has over 4000 universities and colleges. How many of our universities can stand them. To me, you should be happy some of our universities are even among top 2000. undecided

Imo State university should be closed down.

Their medical students spend nothing less than 12 years in med school, plus the management has a way of using eye service to trick NUC and the Medical association of nigeria into giving them partial accreditation in order to function.

Please ease their sufferings, close down that medical school.

It's a huge embarrassment that LAUTECH has consistently been in the first 20 school in Nigeria even when nothing was happening there at all. In fact, I'm tired of webometric and the rest of them.

So my Alma Mater,LAUTECH,remains the best ranked State University? The folks there are very hardworking with the publication of their research even with the funding brouhaha from the Visitors.

Still not surprising for Nigerian Universities though disappointing. The system is grossly under-funded and there's a need for a state of emergency to be declared in the Education sector. Nothing spectacular has happened. How do we expect a unique or different result when we keep doing things casually, without any form of ingenuity.

Useless ranking based only on Web presence by a lazy organisation sitting in Madrid.

How can you rank African universities based only on number of pdf files of each university on Google.

A school is just a ground to maximize your potentials.
If u think going to a "good" school without personal efforts to know what u study, you will be an empty person who had more privileges.

Not when students are still been asked to kneel down and raise up their hands in some universities.
And
A lecturer here sees himself as an overlord and not someone who won't be employed if students are not there.
And
Lecturers are still been employed due to quota systems and regional affiliation so that most lecturers in the core north are all hausas and those in the core east are mostly igbos.
And
Our budget on education is so low. When other nations are spending over 5trillion naira on education and research, our dear Giant of Africa sets aside 250B naira for education(and not research).
And
Why would they make top 5000 when at this era in history, NUC budgets more of her funds on purchase of cars and not on research.

Education in Nigeria is overrated.
We don't employ the best heads.
We loot money meant for development of our higher institution s and an NUC top official has the eeffrontery to be attending his son's graduation from a school in the first world.

O ma se o!

We could argue that the private universities are young though. It is incredibly tough for any university not offering medicine to make significant progress on webometrics. Medicine is more researched and has more citations, this give medicine offering universities huge advantage in the excellence and citation indicators.

This is why Times is better and more respected globally by governments. Times measures universities by what they do before comparing them with other universities.

Also there are thousands of US and Indian schools which don't make top 5,000 either.

I had to pull my nephew from that school. He spent 5years with only second MBBS exams to show for all the time he spent there. Honestly, that place should be closed down.

He's currently schooling in the Caribbean now and doing excellently well.

There's nothing embarrassing about this. The ranking was premised on the effect of the research of these Varsities on the Nigerian and global community. Don't tell me LAUTECH lecturers went to sleep at home during the protracted strike without contributing anything to the body of knowledge. It's Webomatric ranking. Let's wait for NUC(made in Nigeria) ranking before raising an eyebrow.

But we are talking about a 2018 ranking. Besides, if you argue that the private universities are young and they are growing, do you think other decent universities across the world are not growing as well? I have studied in both environments and I can tell you that it will take many decades with investments of several hundreds of millions of dollars for any Nigerian university to compete with those in the West.
