I didn't see the big deal there,an average NigerIan car owner can afford all that.
Stop that! angry If you own a car and you pay 300 naira x 2, in order to pass through the Lekki-Ikoyi toll gate every day, won't it add up to something substantial, at the end of the year? And there are 2 toll gates on either side of Lekki Phase 1. The 1st one is right on the road that leads to Victoria Island, and the 2nd one is on the bridge that leads to Ikoyi. Either way you must pass one or both at least twice a day, if you live or work inside Lekki.

Why didn't they put those same toll gates at Apapa, Ikeja, Ilupeju, Gbagada, Surulere, Yaba, Ebute Metta, Magodo, Eko Atlantic, Epe or even inside Old Ikoyi itself? Dem talk say na only Lekki people dem fit exploit?

The other part that is truly annoying, is the hopeless traffic jam that has bedevilled both toll gates. To ascend or descend the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge, you cannot help but spend 30 - 45 minutes in traffic every single day, before you get to the toll-gate. The same thing goes for the V/I end. It is a classic case of suffering and smiling. Were these toll-gates created to make life difficult for people in that area? Na wetin? shocked

Nigerians, lagosians especially need to embrace carpooling. Sometimes in that same traffic you'll see hundreds of cars with single occupants. Truth is the volume of cars is just unbelievable sometimes.

On the other hand one will expect toll gate fare would be cheap as the cars passing that route are much. Alas, we are hearing of an increment. Incredible

Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge.

They increased the toll fees from N250 to N300 for salon cars and N300 to N400 for SUVs.

Traffic.

No movement.

Motorists complaining.

I came out of my Taxify and walked to the toll gates.

Others were doing same.

I got to a crowd already around the booth.

They were raining curses on the uniformed attendants, the state government and the federal government.

A man abandoned his car at the toll gate, took off his shirt and walked to the edge of the bridge shouting...

"I can't take it again!"

Over and over and over.

He climbed the hedge.

Two joggers grabbed him.

He began to wail in anguish.

People congregated around him.

All consoled him as he kept wailing.

"Let me die! Let me leave this life for them!"

Cars are honking.

Bedlam.

Some staff of the company that collects the toll walked up to the crowd and spoke to man.

"Oya, come and pass. You don't have to pay."

He kept crying.

One of the spectators calls out to him.

"Oga dem say it have do. Come carry your car make we no die for go slow."

His wailing subsided.

He relaxed his feeble struggles.

And was led to his car.

He entered into it and drove off.

One of the staff started walking down the rows of cars that were liniing up bumper to bumper waiting their turn.

He was shouting on top of his voice.

"We are going to open the gate for the next ten minutes for you all to pass for free. Please tomorrow if you say the toll is too expensive and because of that you want to kill yourself. We are begging you o. Please kill yourself at home so that you won"t come here and block traffic..."

We all ran to our cars.

People shouting excitedly "Ope o!"

Lagos.

Today, it took me 3hours to get to Victoria Island from Lekki via the alternative route due to maddening traffic.

To make it worse, a truck carrying building blocks got stuck on that Oniru Market Road. I thing I noticed today was that the usual traffic on that alternative route quadrippled.

Speaking for myself - As Ambode & Tinubu (The owner of LCC) have decided to frustrate me due to their insatiable appetite for greed, all the visible & the invisible irunmoles shall frustrate you & your families including close associates by the authority of Obatala, Ogun Lakaaye Oshimale & Eshu Laalu Ogirioko.

As for Ambode, with that his ugly ninja-turtle head, you shall be replaced with Jimi Agbaje come 2019. Every source of joy in your life shall turn to sorrow henceforth.

Why do we hate ourselves in Nigeria like this We hate each other so much, whether it's yoruba vs igbo or in this your case, mainland vs island.

How are our voices to be heard, if half are out of sync

Read my post well. That's why I said it's rather unfortunate if a low income earner is caught in the web.

Bro, please let's be sincere with ourselves. For things to really work the way it's supposed to be, prices must be paid. Sacrifices must be made. We complain too much in Nigeria. I am in a place where I pay toll as well meanwhile there's no any alternatives to that. I just have to pay it. That's the way they generate revenue to put things in places for us to enjoy. Unfortunately, same thing can't be said about Nigeria as the fund generated might become diverted along the line. I fully support toll and increment if only its intended for the comfort and benefit of the populace. That's how things work in other places. They increased the toll of a particular place I used to visit just of recent. No one protested and you pay regardless of your financial class.

The thing is, the affluent ones on the island are the main cause of the traffic gridlock on that alternative route. They also avoided the toll thereby increasing the number of vehicles plying the alternative route and increasing the burden. Meanwhile, these same people travel out of the country and pay for EVERYTHING WITH TAX, even smile while doing it. They pay toll on roads and never frown. They get back to Nigeria and complain about everything when they do nothing to contribute to her growth. I'm sort of happy that these rich people are being invariably taxed heavily in lagos via several avenues. Unfortunately, when you prune a tree branch, some other things suffer with it.

I understand your plight. It is well.

Meanwhile let me tease you a bit. When you tell people you stay on the Island and they hail you say Chairman you be big man oo. When some other people would even respect you and class you among the elites of Lagos, do you tell them No oo I nor be rich man oo. Don't you smile and say Yes Na we be that. Lol. Why is it now that it concerns increasing tolll that you're saying nor be everyone wey dey island be rich people.
I know how my guyz back then dey always feel when guyz hail dem as Island boiz (esp. in the presence of dem mainland Ashanas) , despite say na one suburb dem kaban dey oo. But the kind rep the thing dey give dem nor be here.

You are the one deceiving your ungodly self. sad What do the Apapa or Tincan ports in Lagos, have to do with the toll-gates in Lekki? shocked What exactly do the ports, have to do with govt increasing toll-gate fees in Lekki? Do you even know where Lekki is located in Lagos?? Must you show everyone how many clueless comments you can dish out?

I understand your plight. It is well.
Oga, you obviously do not understand the plight of those living and working in Lekki. sad Is the alternative road restricted only to the poor? Or are you going to dip your hands into the pockets of those you perceive to be rich, and force them to go through the toll gates?

You did not even mention the fact, that part of what caused the gridlock on the alternative route, is the poor state of that road - too many craters, bumps and uneven surfaces. Coupled with the fact that the road, is simply too narrow and it is just one single route that serves people from several other communities, who have to go through that area, to reach other parts of Victoria Island or Lekki peninsula! shocked

If some people in Lekki Phase 1 can even afford to pay the toll fare, what about those coming from Igbo-Efon, Sangotedo, Ajah, Badore, Awoyaya, Lakowe, Ogombo, Eputu, Oribanwa, Langbasa, Shapati, Bogije, Eleko etc., and all those smaller towns dotted across the Lekki Peninsula? Will you make the payment on their behalf, at the toll gate? angry

As for those you call the "the affluent ones on the island are the main cause of the traffic gridlock on that alternative route. They also avoided the toll thereby increasing the number of vehicles plying the alternative route and increasing the burden. Meanwhile, these same people travel out of the country and pay for EVERYTHING WITH TAX, even smile while doing it. They pay toll on roads and never frown..." you seem to enjoy generalising about everything, and everyone in this class. sad In some countries, they are allowed to collect the taxes they have paid in those places back, when they present their VAT rebate form at the airport, to show they are non-residents.

Now what is the proportion of those you call the "affluent ones, that travel abroad and pay for everything including tolls on roads abroad," compared to those who actually ply the routes, where these toll-gates are located in Lekki? Are they up to 30%, 40% or 5%? Did you conduct a survey or a census, to arrive at the total estimates of these affluent people? Assumption is the mother of fvck ups. Please stop jumping to conclusions. The poor, the rich and those in-between, live in various districts in Lekki peninsula.

Most of the owners of those fancy affluent cars you see, may be heavily indebted in one way or the other, to various financial institutions. Almost everyone is on some sort of tight budget or the other. Very few folks have extra cash to throw around. There are too many things going on, that you do not see. Other affluent-looking vehicles, may even be official cars of various companies. undecided

Are you aware that many of those you see as "affluent" who travel abroad, probably use cabs, hire cars, hail Uber or even use public transport while they are abroad, as it would be expensive to own and keep cars parked in specific places, over a long period, in order to use them, whenever they arrive in those foreign cities? Parking costs money abroad, in many cities. Please cross check.

Kindly keep your bad-belle about those you perceive to be affluent, inside your back pocket, because no one is interested. sad If you cannot offer sound advice, to reduce the burden that Lagosians are going through, then please keep quiet. Most people are just trying to earn a honest living, without govt inflicting hardship on their daily routine!

Just imagine this rubbish, for a road that was already in existence

All they did was add extra lanes and now we have to pay toll seemingly forever.

This is soo sad, all kinds of people live on the lekki/ajah axis, rich, poor, middleclass.

What I don't get is why Nigerians that are not affected by a certain situation display such nonchalant attitudes. People are already saying people can pay, like, why would you be so insensitive to your fellow humans, your fellow Nigerians, heck, your fellow Lagosians. Is it cause they claim to be living in "lekki", that you hate them

N200 both ways is N400 a day. If you forget something or go for lunch break, meeting, hustle, then you double that N400 to N800, just to pass a road

I have no problem with tolling the Lekki-Ikoyi Link bridge, cause that bridge never existed before and solves a particular problem, but how can you toll a road that had already been built, with people already using said road to get to their various homes

Is Nigeria really a country

Some annoying people will now come and say, "but there is toll in the U.S.A", but do they even know how toll works in the U.S Just annoying little bratty rif raffs, mtcheew. In the U.S, you can decide to use the toll or not, but I guarantee you that your alternative route will not be a single lane road passing through a private estate and market, mtcheew undecided

Imagine! What an excuse. A very funny one. They should borrow money to pay the toll too since they could borrow to live a good life.

As far as being responsible in Nigeria is concerned , NO ONE IS EVER FINANCIALLY Buoyant. They'd be heavily taxed on all those their luxuries in some climes. Who send dem to borrow money buy am.
That's the mindset killing us in Nigeria. We want almost free everything. Government should be responsible for everything.

Let me make my point clear again. I'm not here to throw banter with you. I agree our elected Leaders are very useless and sometimes might put up policies solely to enrich themselves and their cronies. Meanwhile, if the increment in toll is to avoid indebtedness or raise more revenue for the development I am totally in support of it provided it'd be used for its intended purposes. Meanwhile, how would know that for sure if we don't give them the benefit of doubt.
For things to work, we have to tighten up our trousers and be ready to pay the price. Is it going to be easy, definitely not.
However, we all going to enjoy it at the long run.

It is not an excuse. It is the reality. sad Nobody wants free anything - people only want value for whatever money they are putting down. For example, do not bill me for using a road that is meant to cut my journey or travel time in half, and then still expect me to sit in traffic and spend an even longer time, on such a road! Instead of resolving that problem, you then decide to increase the toll fees! shocked After just 5 days notice...

The increment in tolls is NOT to build additional infrastructure, or raise revenue for development. It is to enable the govt's cronies LCC, meet the debt obligation, they claim to have incurred on that road. And everyone is saying that govt spent billions to buy back the concession from LCCI, so which debt are they still talking of servicing, which has led them to increase prices? Nigerians have been tightening their belts for years, but this insensitive state govt is bent on making their bodies snap into bits, due to hardship they keep inflicting on a daily basis....

It is not an excuse. It is the reality. sad Nobody wants free anything - people only want value for whatever money they are putting down. For example, do not bill me for using a road that is meant to cut my journey or travel time in half, and then still expect me to sit in traffic and spend an even longer time, on such a road!

You should have replied maturely like this earlier before tagging yourself a derogatory name. I like sensible discourse.

That's where the problem lies. The government itself hasn't made themselves to be trusted enough though. Else, if truly they incurred a huge debt that needs to be repaid or recovered the increment is justifiable.
My point is, you know even on some African countries where they enjoy good amenities, the citizens pay heavily for it. Same thing in developed countries. The sad part is the decadence in our morals and values couldn't make anyone to be trusted any longer. Hence one can't be too sure if truly the money won't be diverted. Meanwhile, I need you to understand that there's no time in Nigeria that anything would be increased by the govt. that many of us wouldn't frown at it. Meanwhile on a lighter note, when we get to Bar and we meet 50 to 100 naira increment on our favorite brand, we don't leave immediately nor cuss out the bar attendants . We dip our hands in our pockets and still buy as many bottles as we can enjoy. Yet we we'd always make ourselves and everyone believe we don't have money. I understand everyone's point as to the inconvenience. But let me ask you this. If the current amount just increased to had always been the initial start-off amount since the inception of the toll, do you think it'd reduce number of people passing there? My point is, as sad as it is, we'd always get used to it. Bro this kind of thing is expected in a place like Lagos. Lagos is like Las Vegas of Nigeria (expect many expensive shitts regardless) but for the corrupt government we have at the helms of affairs who wouldn't deliver as promised.
