You should have replied maturely like this earlier before tagging yourself a derogatory name. I like sensible discourse.

That's where the problem lies. The government itself haven't made themselves to be trusted enough. Else, if truly they incurred a huge debt that needs to be repaid or recovered the increment is justifiable.
My point is, you know even on some African countries where they enjoy good amenities, the citizens pay heavily for it. Same thing in developed countries. The sad part is the decadence in our morals and values couldn't make anyone to be trusted any longer. Hence one can't be too sure if truly the money won't be diverted. Meanwhile, I need you to understand that there's no time in Nigeria that anything would be increased by the govt. that many of us wouldn't frown at it. Meanwhile on a lighter note, when we get to Bar and we meet 50 to 100 naira increment on our favorite brand, we don't leave immediately nor cuss out the bar attendants . We dip our hands in our pockets and still buy as many bottles as we can enjoy. Yet we we'd always make ourselves and everyone believe we don't have money. I understand everyone's point as to the inconvenience. But let me ask you this. If the current amount just increased to had always been the initial start-off amount since the inception of the toll, do you think it'd reduce number of people passing there? My point is, as sad as it is, we'd always get used to it.

Hello, what derogatory name was used in my last post? sad Or are you confusing me with someone else?

You keep talking about paying heavily for amenities or utilities in different countries. Do Nigerian workers earn the same salary as workers in those other countries you mentioned? shocked Each day, we hear of those in power stealing huge sums of money that should have been spent on our infrastructure. But instead of plugging the loopholes, through which such money is siphoned out of the system, so that it can be deployed to good use, the masses are simply made to cough up additional funds to cover up such losses.

How many Nigerians go to a bar to buy different types of drinks? I don't....and there are many more folks who are teetotallers like me, who prefer the comfort of their homes, rather than going to any bar.

Many honest hardworking Nigerians do not truly have spare cash to throw around, at this period. Last year alone, so many folks were laid off, in banks and other financial institutions. They have families, dependants and all sorts of obligations. Quite a large number of small businesses have been forced to cut back on resources, lay off staff or just simply fold up. sad

I don't know the circles in which you move, but obviously you have a very dim view of the reality that most Nigerians go through.

Just imagine this rubbish, for a road that was already in existence

All they did was add extra lanes and now we have to pay toll seemingly forever.

This is soo sad, all kinds of people live on the lekki/ajah axis, rich, poor, middleclass.

What I don't get is why Nigerians that are not affected by a certain situation display such nonchalant attitudes. People are already saying people can pay, like, why would you be so insensitive to your fellow humans, your fellow Nigerians, heck, your fellow Lagosians. Is it cause they claim to be living in "lekki", that you hate them

N200 both ways is N400 a day. If you forget something or go for lunch break, meeting, hustle, then you double that N400 to N800, just to pass a road

I have no problem with tolling the Lekki-Ikoyi Link bridge, cause that bridge never existed before and solves a particular problem, but how can you toll a road that had already been built, with people already using said road to get to their various homes

Is Nigeria really a country

Some annoying people will now come and say, "but there is toll in the U.S.A", but do they even know how toll works in the U.S Just annoying little bratty rif raffs, mtcheew. In the U.S, you can decide to use the toll or not, but I guarantee you that your alternative route will not be a single lane road passing through a private estate and market, mtcheew undecided

The road is a commodity so you have options on whether to buy or not. So exactly what is the rant about pally, find an alternative product. Na by force to live there.
By the laws of demand and supply as the Lekki 'show' grows so will the 'gate fee'. The horse bolted when the privatisation was accepted and hailed so get your children well schooled and prospered cos by their time they will probably be paying 5,000 for a scooter.

Ha. The day Lagosians hailed the concession they signed away public property into private hands and a social service into a product.
With all that is going on that road is looking like the product you put in your tank to drive on it.

And like the laws of relativity I have a sneaky feeling the toll tags the price of gasoline.

Check the guy you initially quoted who replied me.

I get your point. I understand things aren't getting better I also understand and agree the useless Lagos state govt should have ensured the alternative route was good enough before implementing the new tariff regime. However, As much as I understand your point including some others on this thread, I need you to also understand my own point of view as well. Do you really know " there was no time it was easy in Nigeria ". Infact, No December people wouldn't say na wa oo this December e get as e be. worse than last year's. No money. Economy is bad. See how everywhere dry. It was so during Obasanjo, GEJ and now Buhari. We'd always lament of not being financially buoyant but in reality many people still do great things, buy cars, build houses regardless of the standard. Let me give you something to ponder on. What's the most prominent complaints of Nigerians abroad? Two things. 1)E nor easy. 2)Tax. Dem complain of e nor easy from Naija carry am enter another place even when they can't honestly say it is not getting better. They lament about tax all because WE ARE NOT USED TO IT. We need to start embracing some cultures

Let me tell you this at this junction, if the country is going to be better than this, I really don't see how we won't pay dearly for it. If tomorrow we decide to elect those our desired Technocrats who are well exposed and experienced. One of the very few available routes they'd use for infrastructural development, job creation, social welfare is wielding a heavy hammer of Taxation (this might not necessarily come after the proposed development but prior, to generate the needed funds) which I don't see how it'd ever be easy to do giving the fact that most people would call them Capitalists and resent it.

Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge.

They increased the toll fees from N250 to N300 for salon cars and N300 to N400 for SUVs.

Traffic.

No movement.

Motorists complaining.

I came out of my Taxify and walked to the toll gates.

Others were doing same.

I got to a crowd already around the booth.

They were raining curses on the uniformed attendants, the state government and the federal government.

A man abandoned his car at the toll gate, took off his shirt and walked to the edge of the bridge shouting...

"I can't take it again!"

Over and over and over.

He climbed the hedge.

Two joggers grabbed him.

He began to wail in anguish.

People congregated around him.

All consoled him as he kept wailing.

"Let me die! Let me leave this life for them!"

Cars are honking.

Bedlam.

Some staff of the company that collects the toll walked up to the crowd and spoke to man.

"Oya, come and pass. You don't have to pay."

He kept crying.

One of the spectators calls out to him.

"Oga dem say it have do. Come carry your car make we no die for go slow."

His wailing subsided.

He relaxed his feeble struggles.

And was led to his car.

He entered into it and drove off.

One of the staff started walking down the rows of cars that were liniing up bumper to bumper waiting their turn.

He was shouting on top of his voice.

"We are going to open the gate for the next ten minutes for you all to pass for free. Please tomorrow if you say the toll is too expensive and because of that you want to kill yourself. We are begging you o. Please kill yourself at home so that you won"t come here and block traffic..."

We all ran to our cars.

People shouting excitedly "Ope o!"

Lagos.

Imagine! What an excuse. A very funny one. They should borrow money to pay the toll too since they could borrow to live a good life.

As far as being responsible in Nigeria is concerned , NO ONE IS EVER FINANCIALLY Buoyant. They'd be heavily taxed on all those their luxuries in some climes. Who send dem to borrow money buy am.
That's the mindset killing us in Nigeria. We want almost free everything. Government should be responsible for everything.

Let me make my point clear again. I'm not here to throw banter with you. I agree our elected Leaders are very useless and sometimes might put up policies solely to enrich themselves and their cronies. Meanwhile, if the increment in toll is to avoid indebtedness or raise more revenue for the development I am totally in support of it provided it'd be used for its intended purposes. Meanwhile, how would know that for sure if we don't give them the benefit of doubt.
For things to work, we have to tighten up our trousers and be ready to pay the price. Is it going to be easy, definitely not.
However, we all going to enjoy it at the long run.

Dude please just Shut up! You're just here shouting sane climes, sane climes up and down. where do you stay and how much do you pay for tolls there? Be precise please.

grandstar:
I think it was poorly handled by LCC

There should have been more than adequate publicity about such a hike. Anyway, the lockdown as finally created that publicity Nigerian style grin

I support the increase. In real terms, the amount they were charging had gone down due to the loss of almost 50% of the Naira's value. An increase was just reasonable.

Nigerians should start learning to pay the full cost of utilities and services either through direct charges or indirectly through indirect taxation such as petrol tax etc

Unless people are ready to pay, they should not whine about poor infrastructure

I think Lagosians had better buy that toad back from LCC. Send a petition to the LSHA for it to be sold to the public for something like.....400 billion. Then Lagosians can make it toll free....
I'm sure the 250,000 users can cough out 2 million each to remove the gates. That's about 10000 passages or 13 years of tolling.... or should I say, toiling.

Yes, in a decade you will probably spend an amount on tolls equivalent to a small piece of land somewhere else.
