President Muhammadu Buhari has renamed Federal University, Ndufu-Ikwo, Ebonyi State to Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ebonyi State.

Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbanjo, announced this during the burial service of the former late, Dr Alex Ekwueme at St John, The Divine Church, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He said this was in honour of Ekwueme’s contributions to nation building.

I think it's ok. Alex Ekwueme played clean politics devoid of ethnic bigotry, unprovoked looting of the treasury, and retired at the right time with clean name.

I don’t get this whole idea of renaming a school after somebody when the person is dead.

Why would Buhari be the one to rename the school in the first place. What is the role of the schools senate/academic stakeholders or the governing council of the university. Did they deliberate and make such recommendation to the federal government.

Some of these name changes sound awkward. I wouldn’t want to see UNN, UNILAG, UI changed after somebody. I don’t think it’s proper to just change the name without seeking the opinion of people.

That's cheap and if he thinks that's a political masterstroke he's dreaming. GEJ tried same thing with Unilag and failed. That's a very cheap way to immortalise anyone. Construct a new edifice and name it after the person if you care so much.

What is wrong with this man, he was asked by the people of Anambra State to change Federal Polytechnic Okoh to Alex Ekwueme University of Technology but he decided to go to Ebonyi and create some acrimony among the Igbos by renaming an existing institution like GEJ ignorantly did to UNILAG by naming it MKO Abiola University before rescinding the decision
