There were protests back then but IBB won't have it - military dictatorship.
Besides, OAU was Awolowo's vision. He built the school. UNILAG's history is different. There is no basis for changing the name to MKO's after about 50 years of existence.

Unilag is a brand on its own.. an ivory tower in Africa.

The one renamed after Ekweme is unknown, hence the silence.
He should have renamed UNN after him, let's see what their reactions would be.

It is out of pride that university of Lagos wasn't renamed. Aside that The Federal university in Ebony is a new one so changing it's name is no big deal.

When OAU was renamed from Uniife, it was easy cos of two reasons, 1. the contribution of Awolowo to education was unrivaled. 2. It was done shortly after he passed on in 1987. The Ebonyi renaming followed similar pattern. The school is still young and the renaming was done during the burial of Ekwueme. For Unilag, the renaming was very ill-thought. It was too political. Plus University of Lagos name has grown over many decades. Jonathan wanted to score cheap political point in South West and the SW people would have none of it...

Imagine that OBJ dies today, and they decide to change University of Ibadan to Olusegun Obasanjo University. Dem no go try am. They will pick the new Federal University in Ekiti to rename. It is what it is..

Secondly, the prestigious institution is among the first generation university and has already made name. The mention of UNILAG alone has this swag that comes with it as a mega school in a mega city in a mega location... For those who dont know, the fight to revert the name back to unilag was fought by the ALUMNI not the student.

So therefore you can't just wake up and change the name to MAulag... dafuk ??.. sounds like incantation.

Same way the Old Boys of the first secondary school in Nigeria fought for three years to get Lagos State Government revert to it's old name, CMS Grammar School, Lagos.

Abiola has already been immortalised by govt, with various monuments named after him. The MKO Abiola Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium situated within Abeokuta, in Nigeria. In Abuja, there is a grade-A intra-city highway named Moshood Abiola Way, in Garki Area 2, Abuja.
