ObaIgwe1:Awolowo was the one who set up the old University of Ife when he was Premier of the old Western Region. He was one of those who actively nurtured its' growth in the early days, by making land, resources and staff available for its take-off and development. Even the Ahmadu Bello University, which was initially known as the University of Northern Nigeria was renamed following a decision by the regional government of Northern Nigeria. In May 1960, the Northern Region had upgraded the School of Arabic Studies in Kano to become the Ahmadu Bello College for Arabic and Islamic Studies. (The college was named after the region's dominant political leader, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello). tunene66: Interesting analogy! |

Reminez:Unilag graduates should stop making noise. First generation university does not give automatic employment. I service with 3 unilag graduates in the north. They serve in nursery school while I serve in a government secondary school. Stop all these noise and accept the fact that a country that boast of intelligence and intellectuals like Nigeria is been ruled by a president that could not produce his primary school result yet non of the so called professors see anything wrong with it. GEJ a graduate fix price of petrol at #145 so called intelligent people kicked against it but a non primary school holder did same and nobody said anything. |

Ngokafor: You have to understand when azikiwe rejected it and now. The school was still young then unlike now. Ojukwu was burried with full military ceremony rubbishing your claim. You also have to understand that military regime is different from democratic regimes. People protested when IBB renamed OAU but he used military power to have his way. Gej would have succeeded if he was a military dictator. It's not about being petty, it's about defending a legacy. 1 Like |

Gucciboss: Fine, so you are telling us the only reason why UNN was not named after Zik, was because of his objections. At least, an offer was made to name the institution after him. If he had agreed, that school would have borne his name. But many years later, another university was still named after Zik, in the South East. Nnamdi Azikiwe University came into being as an offshoot of the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH). ASUTECH which was established through Law No. 7 of 30 July 1980 by the Government of the old Anambra operated as a multi-campus university, with campuses in Abakiliki, Enugu, Awka and Nnewi. In 1991, following the split of the old Anambra State into Anambra and Enugu States, the Awka and Nnewi campuses of the former ASUTECH were constituted into Nnamdi Azikiwe University by the Anambra State Edict No.5 of November 26, 1991. Nnamdi Azikiwe University was taken over by the Federal Government by Decree No. 34 of July 15, 1992. The university is named after Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first president of Nigeria. The main campus of the University is located at Awka, while the second campus is at Nnewi (NAUTH and Okofia) and the third campus is at Agulu (Faculty of Pharmacy). |

Biggie225: As the most intelligent Igbo on earth, you should have known that PMB also named FUOYE in Ekiti, that is far better than the one in Ebonyi, after Adeyinka Adebayo and no one make noise. Are you saying only Yorubas attend Unilag? 1 Like |
