It is out of pride that university of Lagos wasn't renamed. Aside that The Federal university in Ebony is a new one so changing it's name is no big deal.
We have the likes of UNN but it was not renamed. Haven't you wonder why UNN wasn't changed?

Thank you for your wise answer

Unilag is a known brand, but FUNAI is a new school yet to make a name

There would have been similar noise if Buhari has attempted naming UNN after him.

Even Zik and Ojukwu couldn't get UNN named after them.

Only Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello could get University of Ife and Sokoto renamed after them without much complaints.

It will be difficult to have UI, UNILAG and UNN named after someone in this age. We don't have many heroes left.
Awolowo was the one who set up the old University of Ife when he was Premier of the old Western Region. undecided He was one of those who actively nurtured its' growth in the early days, by making land, resources and staff available for its take-off and development.

Even the Ahmadu Bello University, which was initially known as the University of Northern Nigeria was renamed following a decision by the regional government of Northern Nigeria.

In May 1960, the Northern Region had upgraded the School of Arabic Studies in Kano to become the Ahmadu Bello College for Arabic and Islamic Studies. (The college was named after the region's dominant political leader, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello).

The Ashby Commission report recommendations gave a new impetus and direction. It was ultimately decided to create a University of Northern Nigeria at Zaria (rather than Kano). The university would take over the facilities of the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology at Samaru just outside Zaria, and would incorporate the Ahmadu Bello College in Kano, the Agricultural Research Institute at Samaru, the Institute of Administration at Zaria, and the Veterinary Research Institute at Vom on the Jos Plateau. The law establishing the new university was passed by the Northern Region legislature in 1961. It was decided to name the university after Ahmadu Bello, and the Kano college took the name of Abdullahi Bayero, a past Emir of Kano. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmadu_Bello_University#Foundation_and_first_years

Interesting times indeed. When the late Ondo State Governor named then Ondo State University, Ado Ekiti as Obafemi Awolowo University in the early 80s, it was changed by then Military Governor of Ondo State under the erstwhile Buhari-Idiagbon led military administration to Ondo State University, Ado Ekiti

In addition it was the same Buhari-Idiagbon led military administration that kept the late Dr Alex Ekwueme in prison detention

Just going down historical lane

Interesting analogy! wink

Unilag graduates should stop making noise. First generation university does not give automatic employment. I service with 3 unilag graduates in the north. They serve in nursery school while I serve in a government secondary school. Stop all these noise and accept the fact that a country that boast of intelligence and intellectuals like Nigeria is been ruled by a president that could not produce his primary school result yet non of the so called professors see anything wrong with it. GEJ a graduate fix price of petrol at #145 so called intelligent people kicked against it but a non primary school holder did same and nobody said anything.

You lots should learn to talk about what you know instead of throwing false postulations around....Nnamdi Azikiwe did not want UNN named after him, while Odumegwu Ojukwu led a secession against Nigeri,so the Nigerian Government would not name any monument after him..

Be that as it may...Igbos would not have minded having UNN named after them...We are not as petty as your people biko.

You have to understand when azikiwe rejected it and now. The school was still young then unlike now. Ojukwu was burried with full military ceremony rubbishing your claim. You also have to understand that military regime is different from democratic regimes. People protested when IBB renamed OAU but he used military power to have his way. Gej would have succeeded if he was a military dictator.

It's not about being petty, it's about defending a legacy.

Stop writing what you don't know.

UNN wasn't named after Zik because Zik objected to it.
Zik was a pro Nigeria he wanted the name to remain UNN because of his belief in United Nigeria.

UNN wouldn't have been named after Ojukwu for obvious reasons.

Fine, so you are telling us the only reason why UNN was not named after Zik, was because of his objections. sad At least, an offer was made to name the institution after him. If he had agreed, that school would have borne his name.

But many years later, another university was still named after Zik, in the South East.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University came into being as an offshoot of the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH). ASUTECH which was established through Law No. 7 of 30 July 1980 by the Government of the old Anambra operated as a multi-campus university, with campuses in Abakiliki, Enugu, Awka and Nnewi. In 1991, following the split of the old Anambra State into Anambra and Enugu States, the Awka and Nnewi campuses of the former ASUTECH were constituted into Nnamdi Azikiwe University by the Anambra State Edict No.5 of November 26, 1991. Nnamdi Azikiwe University was taken over by the Federal Government by Decree No. 34 of July 15, 1992. The university is named after Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first president of Nigeria. The main campus of the University is located at Awka, while the second campus is at Nnewi (NAUTH and Okofia) and the third campus is at Agulu (Faculty of Pharmacy).

A prestigious school like The University of Ife was renamed obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). None of you protested because all the Yorubas like Awolowo.
If the Yorubas loved Abiola as they claimed, then they wouldn't have had any problem as regards immortalizing him with their best property. Jonathan only wanted to know if actually they love Abiola but it is now clear to everyone thst their so called love for Abiola is none_existent

Say what you know. People protested but it was a military regime.

As the most intelligent Igbo on earth, you should have known that PMB also named FUOYE in Ekiti, that is far better than the one in Ebonyi, after Adeyinka Adebayo and no one make noise.

Are you saying only Yorubas attend Unilag?

When GEJ renamed Unilag as MAULAG, he was nearly crucified and all the supposed Abiola lovers preferred that Unilag retains its name rather than immortalized their hero.

Now PMB has renamed Ebonyi University as Alex Ekwueme University and the whole Nation is quiet.

So what's really the difference between these two situations.

On is a historical, established and top university.

The other is new and unsettled university still finding its feet.

cheesy

Its very simple.... During the change of name for unilag, MKO Abiola already had two tertiary institutions named after him, so why naming a third one after him?? Him get 3 heads?

Secondly, the prestigious institution is among the first generation university and has already made name. The mention of UNILAG alone has this swag that comes with it as a mega school in a mega city in a mega location... For those who dont know, the fight to revert the name back to unilag was fought by the ALUMNI not the student.

So therefore you can't just wake up and change the name to MAulag... dafuk ??.. sounds like incantation.

God bless UNILAG. I never regretted schooling there!!

What two tertiary institutions? Are you kidding me?

Lol this one no get sense again o. Where did I dispute that the federal university in Ebonyi is a public university undecided
As per Oxford or even Cambridge there is truly a thin line between Private and public university in the UK however many folks would agree that both are public institutions though with full autonomy - the University autonomy is the very reason govt doesn't lay claim to their assets or try to interfere with their governing structure but that doesn't make Oxford a private university.

The presence of Private funding does not also alter a public university into a private one either because most universities have private funding irrespective of who owns them. Quit spewing your ignorance.
Most public universities in the west are not necessarily controlled by the government however that doesn't make them less of a public uni.
