Vivid Imagination, one of Nigeria’s oldest fashion brands, lost millions of naira on Friday following an early morning fire that engulfed its main store and factory located at Falemi House, Obanikoro, Lagos.

According to reports, the fire which must have been caused by a power surge, started at about 2am, and raged for hours before it was put out by men of the Lagos State Fire Service assisted by some well-wishers. By the time the dust had settled, the store, which is home to the company and client’s fabrics, clients’ ready-to-be-delivered outfits, ready-made clothes, shoes, accessories and documents, was completely razed and virtually all the machines were burnt.

Dele Momodu who shared photos from the scene wrote, 'Fire guts one of Nigeria's biggest fashion factories VIVID IMAGINATION in Lagos, my designers of 27 years'.

An official statement from the Management, signed by the Managing Director, Godwin Mekwuye, said: “We wish to announce that early this morning there was afire incident at our company that vastly affected our store and factory. The damage done by this incident was phenomenal because it affected over thirty years of the brand’s history and memories as well as hundreds of millions naira worth of goods and equipment. This is a very difficult time for us as we begin to investigate the cause or causes of this disaster, but we assure our clients’ that the process of revival will begin immediately and we would ensure that this setback will not affect our time-tested efficiency and qualitative service delivery.”

A simple sprinkler system should have saved them from this misfortune. Nigerians aren't ready for business.

What a loss!

Always switch off all appliances, both electrical and manual, including fans, AC ,machines before closing for the day or night.

Sparks which leads to fire outbreak originates from there.

Very unfortunate situation. I hope the facility was insured.
The managers should ensure that a voltage surge protector is provided when the facility is renovated.
Secondly, they should use a POP ceiling with a smoke detector installed to raise an early alarm in the event of a fire outbreak.

money has gone and no amount of prayer can bring that back.

If they had a fire insurance cover which I assume wouldn't cost up to 500k or less(assuming their sum assured or total worth is roughly about 100 million naira) yearly they would have been indemnified(refunded).

In developed countries, almost everything is insured. Stop praying and start acting.

a sprinkling system might put out the fire and eventually damage other things. Fire insurance is the best coupled with other optional extention which also would include damages from sprinkler system as a result of fire. That would have been covered as well.

I doubt if such company wouldn't have insurance cover but if they didn't, that's their loss.

No insurance company will insure ur business against fire hazards if u don't have sprinklers n surveillance cameras.

Water Sprinkler won't destroy up to 5% of what fire will destroy. Fire clears everything n even burns the building to the ground.

Hmm, this is so true. I just thought about it the simple way you analyzed this now. Seems you live abroad,
cos this is the way things are done in a sane society.
Thumbs up man!

I never said any insurance coy would cover ones business without sprinklers or cameras am just saying water could also damage things. 5% of 100 million naira is much too you know.

Thanks for your input though.

I have never stepped foot outside naija. I am an insurance practitioner and I know how reluctant Nigerians are when it comes to insurance.

Thanks for the complement though.
