Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting, is the first day of Lent in Western Christianity. It occurs 46 days (40 fasting days, if the six Sundays, which are not days of fast, are excluded) before Easter and can fall as early as February 4 or as late as March 10. Ash Wednesday is observed by many Western Christians

Why do we put ash on our for head?

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday, and placing them on the heads of participants to the accompaniment of the words "Repent, and believe in the Gospel"

What is the significance of the ashes on the forehead on Ash Wednesday?

A: Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the day many Christians mark as the first day of Lent, the time of reflection and penitence leading up to Easter Sunday. ... As they “impose” or “dispense” the ashes, the pastor or priest reminds each Christian of Genesis 3:19: “For dust you are and to dust you shall return.”

First, you can not eat meat on Ash Wednesday,

Why do crosses get drawn on peoples’ foreheads on Ash Wednesday?

Traditionally, ash is used to represent grief, so devout Christians will wear the cross on their head for the entire day to show their sorrow for Jesus’ crucifixion.

They also represent repentance and show that people have repented of their sins so that they can be prepared for a ‘Holy death’, like Jesus.

As priests draw the crosses on to people’s foreheads, they say: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel”.

The passage you quoted is talking about ur appearance when u fast. That you should not look as thou are fasting. The passage didn't make any reference to ashes..Please correct that.

Nice enlightenment. @ Op,in your last paragraph u said devout Christian will wear cross on their head as a sign of grief for the crucification of Jesus christ. Now my question is why showing grief when the same teaching of gospel tells us that Jesus died for our sins and so we are redeemed. We should be happy instead of showing grief.

Ur countenance and appearance is what the passage u quoted is referring to, that people should not be able to tell that you are fasting. The reception of ashes signifies the beginning of fasting, so u positing that ashes on the forehead disfigures ur appearance is what is mind boggling.

So this is the only thing u could pick from the passage. Didn't you see where I said the reception of ashes signifies the beginning of fasting or would u receive ashes all through the fasting period? I don't know if you are purposely avoiding the true meaning and intent of the passage you quoted.

The pagan origin of Ash Wednesday

I

It's not mentioned in the Bible. None of the apostles observed it. Nowhere are Christians commanded to keep it. It was not even officially practiced until nearly 1000 years after Christ's resurrection. Like so many other non-biblical “Christian” customs, it has pagan roots. It's a sad fact that modern Christianity has appropriated so many customs from the practice of the heathens, that one might wonder if it should still be called Christianity.

Sometimes I wander if people take some moment to reflect independently.
What is wrong with repentance? It is only the devil that would not be happy that people are encouraged to repent from their sins. So to urged people to repent is a pagan practice? This reminds me of Jesus been accused of using the power of the devil to drive out devil. Those people were only instigated by the devil. Check well it may be the same instigating you.

Meat. You can eat fish.

Also, we are to make effort to abstain from unholy practices/bad habits this Lenten season, with the hope of being able to sustain it after lent is over.

We believe fasting isn't just about abstaining from food and prayers alone, people should alsovtry to become better versions of themselves in accordance with God's directives, give to the poor and needy and most especially let people see God in your lifestyle.

God knows we can never be perfect, but we should strive to attain some level of godliness.

Any other catholic is free to add to my input.

"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if

Ash Wednesday emphasizes repentance. And the whole of heaven rejoices when one sinner repents. Luke 15:10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

That you are upset shows the spirit pushing against Ash Wednesday.
