Actually the first person to get a Job from my class after we graduated from school was the only third class graduate amongst us. The second guy who barely got a 2.2 now works in his father's company. Many of the 2.1s are still at home. I'm not trying to encourage mediocrity but the Nigerian labour market is more complex that y'all think.

I have 2 friends who graduated with 'thirdy', one is under UN and the other is working with a ministry in abuja. The 2-1s are still teaching in secondary school.
Immediately we left school , I realized it was not about grade anymore, but you connection, network and above all - luck.

The issue now should not be about graduating With Second Class Lower.

The issue now should be all about graduating WITHOUT ANY ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS.

The era of certificates should be done and dusted by now for crying out loud!

Employers of labour also know that most 2.2 holders got it through sorting. So they believe in what job seekers can offer.

What do you mean? Do your postgrad asap. You can still be hired by multinationals. I have a friend and classmate who graduated 2:2. He went further to obtain his M.Sc. and PhD. He is working for a multinational now. So, upgrade!

. I don't believe this your post, most U.N jobs require 2-1 and above and some years experience in most cases. You people should not condemned the O.P as he is saying the truth, Once you finished with less than 2-1, your chance of even writing graduate trainee test for most high paid is less than 0.4. This exclude those with connection and I.T skills

Stop generalising and exaggerating. sad How can you say "Once you finished with less than 2-1, your chance of even writing graduate trainee test for most high paid is less than 0.4?" It really depends on the industry, in which the vacancies exist, as well as the requirements they are seeking in each candidate. I once overheard a HR Manager telling her colleagues after an interview session, that it would be wiser to shortlist a candidate that had 2-2, as opposed to another applicant with a 1st class. Her excuse was that the 1st class guy performed so poorly during the interview, that she is not sure if he is the owner of the certificate! shocked cheesy

P.S: I know 2 ladies in my church with a 2-2, who have been working for UN Women office in Abuja.

check most graduate trainee jobs advert, what they require is 2-1. There are exceptions to this rule which you sited which is part of the 0.4. Graduating with 1st class or 2-1 does not give you job automatically but gives you a fighting job in almost all jobs than being screen out even before the screening is being done

Again I repeat: It depends on the industry, where the recruitment is being conducted. Not all corporate sectors or industries require 1st class or 2-1, for entry level jobs. Are you even aware that to work as a teller or a junior contract staff within a local bank, you don't need more than an HND? Check with the outsourcing companies that supply contract staff to the financial houses.

Graduate trainees jobs is different from those type of jobs. I still stand on my point, getting 2-1 is the ultimate for those without connections and great oratory skills as it will open many opportunities not necessarily getting the job. Take a look at most juicy graduate trainee jobs on Nairaland and check the requirements

Oga, free your mind. sad I have had cause to interact directly with various HR managers across a wide variety of sectors. I have also consulted for different outsourcing firms, on a private basis. The jobs advertised on Nairaland, do not reflect what happens in every single sector of the economy, neither do such adverts capture all the job requirements in every single industry. Stop being dogmatic. Do you even realise that some graduates start off as contract staff in some industries, (with their 2-2 degrees or HND/BSc.) and after several months or a few years, they are are converted to permanent staff of such organisations?

Don't mind him. Let him be arguing blindly about things he does not know. undecided The 2 ladies I spoke about earlier, had initially worked on a community development project which was implemented by an NGO, and funded by one of the UN agencies. By the time they applied directly to UN Women, their previous work experience in handling such community based projects, as well as the project evaluation & monitoring skills gained on the field, gave them an edge over other candidates, despite their 2-2 degrees.

When it comes to employment matters, more than one route leads to the market place (i.e. recruitment exercises can be conducted in different ways, while candidates may be drawn from multiple pools, or variety of sources.) Somebody once said: "The best jobs are rarely advertised." wink
