Super Eagles Captain Mikel Gets Five Star Rating After Bossing Mascherano In Chinese League Opener

Tianjin Teda started their league campaign on a not too impressive style after letting a one goal lead slip with four minutes left in their game against visiting Hebei CFFC in the Chinese Super League. (Game ended 1-1)

The home team took the lead in the 25th minute but the visitors levelled matters with four minutes left to play despite missing a penalty in the 69th minute of the game.

Captain of the senior national team of Nigeria John Obi Mikel was on from start to finish for the home side, with the visitors lining up their new recruit from Barcelona Javier Mascherano against the Nigerian.
After the game, Mikel was rated highly than the Argentine with a mark of 7.5 out of 10 as against the 6 giving to Mascherano in his first competitive game in the Chinese Super League.
Both players will once again come up against each other in Russia when Nigeria clash with Argentina in one of the games of group D at the 2018 World Cup later this year.

Nigerians will be hoping for more or same kind of performance from the captain of the Super Eagles who was pivotal in helping Nigeria qualify for the World Cup with a game to spare during the World Cup 2018 Qualifiers.

Obasi Signs Bolton Wanderers Deal After Trials
By Adeboye Amosu

Former Super Eagles striker Chinedu Obasi has joined English Championship club Bolton Wanderers on a short-term deal until the end of the season, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Austin Okocha’s former club confirmed Obasi’s arrival on their official website on Saturday.
“Bolton Wanderers are pleased to confirm the signing of Chinedu Obasi on a short-term deal until the end of the season, subject to international clearance,” reads a statement on the club’s official website.
“The 31-year-old was last on the books of Swedish side AIK, and completes his move to Macron Stadium following a successful trial period.”
Having been with Bolton Wanderers on trial last month, Obasi scored the winner in an Under-23s clash with Burnley at Macron Stadium and will now get the chance to play for Phil Parkinson’s side till the end of the season.
The vastly travelled Obasi forward started his professional career with Norwegian club Lyn Oslo in 2005 where he was teammate of former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi.
He has also played in the German Bundesliga with 1899 Hoffenheim and Schalke 04.

Obasi once had a stint in China with Shenzhen where he played under former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

On the international scene, the experienced striker was a member of the Super Eagles side that finished third at the 2010 African Nations Cup in Angola.

He was also part of Nigeria’s U-20 and U-23 teams that finished second at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands in 2005 and at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

I love Shehu as much as I love his peers but has he really given us what we want at the right back?

Shehu is a makeshift right back though people confuse this with being versatile. Shehu is good and I want to see him in Russia but there still exists rooms for improvement.

In our DM Shehu does not stand any chance and the fact that he plays as a DM for his club ain't helping matter also.

Now if u want to take Shehu because he is a utility player, there are two positions to study with keen interest ; the DM and the RB.

at the DM, Ndidi, Etebo, Ogu, Onazi even Agu are all ahead of him, hence he has to concentrate on the the RB.

Now at RB, I will personally select Ebuehi as the RWB when I deploy a 3man defence. He is better suited than the other contenders. He has been doing it consistently on the club level and he just showed us a tip of it the last tine the had his back against the wall.

Shehu will come good in a 4man defense (433) but will he do a better job than Aina? Both players are good passers, agile players and almost equal pace wise. I don't rate English bred players but ever since started following the progress of these two players I av come to realize that Aina is more cerebral. The primary assignment of a RB is to defend, then create an impact in the attack. Shehu's defending ability was slightly better than that of, if not on par with Aina's but the Aina I saw lately has improved immensely on that with the WC on sight. Now going forward, the less said, the better. Aina edges Shehu here because he crosses better and times his runs better. Though these things don't make Shehu terrible, I believe Aina is slightly better.

Now why did I say his WC dream depends on Echiejile? Though it's still kinda premature. If Idowu repeats what he showed against Argentina, then it will be so insane to leave him out. With Elderson and Idowu, the left back is occupied but I would rather Elderson got dropped to make Aina a backup to Idowu hence creating a space at the RB for Shehu.

Elyte89 please read this as the answer to ur qstn also

The way some of you analyze sometimes to prove an unexistent point amazes me... Concerning the words i bolded, so you can write that statement on the world wide web where people who truly watch and understand football discuss?... This is preposterous!

Now listen and listen good, go and rewatch our match against Zambia, watch the play of Shehu both in defense and in attack concentrating on the cutback in the final third which led to Iwobi's goal. That pass scored that goal that is taking us to this same world cup you want to drop him out of,..yes if not for that goal, we probably would have been out of this world cup since Algeria's game was canceled.

It is not everyday a defender wins MOTM not to talk of RB. Shehu deserve to be at the world cup because he took us there. From day one in the qualifiers, his quality was never in doubt, his wing was solid and he never gave any of our opposing wingers a free pass. In fact Shehu was so solid that when the issue of Ola Aina playing or not came up, Aina was forced to play the LB instead because Shehu could not be gambled with at the number 2 position.

Shehu even improved and posted solid performance after performance! ... He earned his position. Let Aina earn his too at the friendlies because with all the hype at hull, he is yet to do anything significant in the GWG...

Funny enough the big problem i forsee with Aina proving himself at the friendlies is Shehu grin, Shehu will not be benched for him, meaning he is stuck at our Left back until further notice.

What Is Happening? Leon Balogun Earns Red Card A Week After Defensive Partner Ekong

Super Eagles star Leon Balogun was given his marching orders in Mainz's goalless draw against Hamburger SV on game week 25 in the German Bundesliga at the Volksparkstadion on Saturday.

About a week ago, Balogun's defensive partner in the national team, William Troost-Ekong, was shown a straight red card, the first in his professional career, in Bursaspor's 5-0 loss suffered at the hands of Galatasaray.

The central defender was shown a yellow card in the 34th minute before receiving a second yellow, then red in the 61st minute, for fouling Hamburg's substitute Luca Waldschmidt.

And Mainz were fortunate not to concede as referee Schmidt had awarded a penalty to the home team for the foul committed by Balogun in the penalty area but the young goalkeeper Müller saved Kostic’s spot-kick.

In 71 previous appearances in the Bundesliga, Balogun had never been dismissed before he took the walk of shame today against Hamburg.

Anthony Ujah came on in the 88th minute for Mainz, eleven minutes after the introduction of winger Karim Onisiwo.
Balogun will not be available for selection for the home contest against Schalke 04 on Friday.

I know, I know... according to Whoscored, Harry Macguire was the highest rated but this is another perspective here....

Nine Aerials Won: Ndidi Pips Mahrez To Leicester City Man Of The Match Award

Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi scooped Leicester City's Man of the Match award following their 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in the Premier League this evening.

Leicester City experts, BBC Leicester named the number 25 the most outstanding player on the pitch ahead of Algeria star Riyad Mahrez, who popped up with a late leveler to cancel out Joshua King's early effort.

Leicester Mercury are on the same page as the BBC as the Nigerian was awarded the highest marks in their playing ratings, seven along with Mahrez.

''The pick of the midfield three, always willing to put his foot in,'' Rob Tanner wrote.

According to stats from whoscored.com, Ndidi showed his aerial abilities against the Cherries, finishing the game with nine aerial duels won, a joint-highest along with Bournemouth's Steve Cook.

The 21-year-old made four tackles to take his tally to 120 for the season, made four interceptions and three clearances.

The former Racing Genk central midfielder has started every match played by the Foxes in the Premier League this term, 29 in total.

Ankle Injury Rules Super Eagles Striker Out Of Friendlies Against Poland, Serbia

Hapoel Beer Sheva striker Anthony Nwakaeme is very unlikely to be called up for the national team's upcoming friendlies against Poland and Serbia.

Nwakaeme has been struggling with an ankle injury for the past
three months and Hapoel Beer Sheva medics have decided that the Nigerian should be pulled out of the squad to enable him undergo treatment in order to regain full fitness.

The 28-year-old will miss at least two games, against Ironi Kiryat Shmona and Bnei Sakhnin, and can only rejoin the squad in the next two weeks, the last match day before the international break, if his treatment goes according to the plan.

''Will Be Out For Some Couple Of Games Due To My Ankle Injury Have Been Struggling With For The Past 3 Months, Hoping To Recover fully Before The PlayOff Start #GodIsTheGreatest #TN9,'' Nwakaeme posted on social media on Saturday.

Allnigeriasoccer.com earlier reported that Nwakaeme had not been contacted by the Nigerian Federation as regards to his invitation for the friendlies in Wrocław and London and his latest injury has crippled any hopes he had of making his debut for the Super Eagles.
