Hi Maternal. I have missed you. How art thou?

maternal:

Well said. They'll put up with nonsense in naija then have the mouth to critize the government/country of a 1st world country who gave them a chance to come get a better life here. Then you have the entitled one with no Canadian work experience, education, etc yet feel they should get a big boy job over others who have been here longer with those qualifications. At times this board can be comical. Again well said.

LoL @ better life. If only people know what they want from life. But, hey steady electricity and GMO chicken will do. grin

No electricity and bush meat sounds better. Because canadians are flocking to migrate to naija.

Hian, the day westerners start flocking to a shithole African jungle, know that the world has come to an end, Nigeria in my opinion and several African countries l have been to are not fit for humans to live, with the kind of useless leaders we have all over Africa from Corrupt Ex South African leader to the current thieves in Power in Nigeria to East and North Africa, the continent is messed up.

I, prefer the African continent to be auctioned off on eBay to richer western nations because African leaders lack the charisma and vision to lead the continent., no wonder President Trump called it a shithole, why won't it be described so, imagine 44million dollars found in a flat in ikoyi in Nigeria and up till date, nobody was punished. sad

You need to let this go. Nobody came for you, how you got that from Vcole's response to you is surprising. And to be honest all this story about not finding job and finding no, and holding on blah blah blah is PLAYED OUT.
Except you're a complete JJC with no access to the Internet and zero acumen for research, how would one expect to land today and become manager of a company? It happens, yes but be realistic and pray.
I have been reading the back and forth about job this job that. And I ask myself what sorta people are these that took time to submit application to become PR of a foreign land? Some of y'alls applications took 9 months before it was approved. Y'all didn't come posting and lamenting quotes from the bible, now na small thing like finding job is what we have spent 20 pages on. Yet y'all lived in Naija alllll this while with no power and fuel scarcity, una no go back and forth with yalls government about that. I believe that positivity gets one far. No need to write a post about it sounding like a pastor to convince people to believe. DO YOU! Everybody's struggle in life is different. Everybody's experience is different. Y'all need to grow up.
If you are on this thread and actually need to read a post about someone's experience with job search and menial job blah blah blah to "connect" to the struggle, then you should have sat back down in Nigeria.

That's your opinion and that of your crew. The TRIEC mentorship programme i left just now asked each table to write down what motivates them in their job search and almost every table had sharing experiences as one of their motivating factors. I wont say more than this as i have better things to do than to argue with people who try to shut others down or mock people who share theirs.

Which crew? Have you ever seen Canadianfly roll with anyone on here? I'm not about that clique life my dear. What I am telling you is you are PARANOID. NO one is coming after you or shutting you down. Except you are reading something different from what everyone else is reading.

And you must've misunderstood my post, I am not shutting you down. Matter of fact, I don't care for anyone's struggles on here. Yours and anyone else included. I only care for MY struggles. And that's the point I was making in my post. DO YOU and forget about everybody else's struggle. Their struggle won't make yours harder or easier. Focus on you! And it is not by force for people to share their struggles either. Lamenting that you don't see much of that post, is your problem. Nairaland is not your manual to life. If you want a pity party of "strugglers in Canada" open a thread for it and y'all can post all your struggles on there. It's redundant that you keep coming back and saying people are coming for you, when the truth is no one really cares, at least I don't.

EmmyToluwa:
LONG POST ALERT!!!

Hello all!!! I have been a silent follower of this thread though I have posted a few times in the past. I just felt it is important I share my landing experience so far so that people can learn from our experience. my time line follows:

1. Bought tickets October 3rd (please note not a mistake, na faith and good deal)

2. Got PPR November 8th 2017 (after 8 months of wait)

3. COPR and passport returned November 27th (I had sent out our passport November 13th).

4. Landed in Toronto 17th February with my wife and son via Ethiopian Airlines, and received by my friend who took us to his place in London (we are still in his house at the moment), Ontario. The landing procedure was a bit slow as we landed on a Saturday and the customs officials were not so fast. Because of this we couldn't get our SIN and our PR card was not processed also as we couldn't remember the friend's postal code. The customs officer we met was a nice woman, she even gave us her phone to call my friend who had been waiting outside. They didn't check our bags and she asked us to sign Goods to follow forms as I was sending food over from Naija. To cut long story short, we reached London, ON around 2:16pm as it is a 2hr drive from Toronto.

5. On Sunday 17th February, we followed my friend to his church, a white dominated church, and after the service we were introduced as first-timers, this was where our miracle began. The woman (my angel actually) that attended to us, also an immigrant (from El Salvador) happened to be an HR manager at one of the Top 5 banks in Canada and while we were talking about our induction process in church got to know that we just arrived in Canada the day before asked about our employment status and I told her we will start to look for jobs once we are settled. Well na so she told me her bank would be having a career fair for job seekers and she will want to me to attend. I was like wetin I dey do wey I no go fit go?? I don reach there self!!!

6. Monday 19th was a public holiday (Family day, please note no be only naija we like holiday o....dem get holiday pass us for here sef).

7. Tuesday, 20th February, my friend drove us to Service Canada. We got our SIN and the woman we spoke with gave us the procedure to submit address for PR card. We went from there to Scotia bank to open account and got $3000 in credit card immediately to start credit history.

8. Wednesday 21st, we went to get phones. This we did under my friend's plan as those ppl didn't want to give phone to a newcomer on plan. Well I didn't mind, I sha got iPhone 8 to pay over 24months.

9. Thursday 22nd February, I was home all through applying and reading for my CPA conversion. I had aready started this from Naija. We also got a a very good laptop at a crazy price from Kijiji, for here kijiji and Facebook market place are your friends. I know there are other good ones too! We did not really look for house as my friend said he will introduce us to a friend who is an expert at settling new comers, including house and other things.

10. Friday 23rd, I attended the TD bank Career fair and it was fun, I told my interviewer I willing to start with them but they have to know that I am more qualified than the entry level job they are recruiting for. The woman said she understands, but that if selected, I have to be patient with them because they have a 1-yr period of assessing new intakes before determining if you can move up the ladder. Come and see me as I dey speak phone wey I no say na lie. I come dey dictate when I neva even do test let alone interview. The woman said they will get back if they feel say my skills and experience allign with their available roles.

11. Saturday/Sunday, we were home applying for jobs and adjusting CV. Oh I missed out the part where the my angel said I should send her my CV so that she can fine tune it to the way TD bank likes candidate's CVs to be like. So this was the CV i took to the CF on Friday.

12. Monday, 26th I received an email that I should complete an online assessment which I did like 36 hrs later as I was visiting friends and still dropping CVs to companies and also visited Access Center for bridging programs (another story).

13. Wedneday 28th Febraury, I received a call fro TD bank HR inviting me for an interview on Friday. I called my angel immediately and she immediately sent me their interview format to use, She said I should practice many times infront of a mirror. Well I did.

14. Thursday, we went to check our first house and the agent/lanlord were very willing to give us the apartment because of the friend of my friend. The only issue was that we have to wait one month for the current tenant to vacate and for repair works to be done. For my mind, I was wondering what was there to repair, everything looks good!!!

15. Yesterday, March 2nd, I was at TD bank with 6 other candidates, infact na then I know say naija peeps dey waka. of the 7, 3 of us were Nigerians. The interview was in 4 stages, role play, group assignment, assessment and a one-one interview. At the end, I was drained but yet fulfilled in a way I couldn't explain. The HR lady told us to expect feed backs and possible appointments by next week.

16. This afternoon, my friend and I went to drop another friend who was travelling to the US and on our way back I was telling him our my confidence has dropped since the interview and I was feeling they might be calling to tell me no. See Satan!!!

As we got back home, my phone rang and it was the HR recruiter with her nice voice. She asked me what I tot about the interviews and I how tot I performed. My heart wan cut, i tot this is it, maybe they have rejected me. I told her I learnt alot and also that I am confident my skills and experience are well aligned with the role. And then I heard, WELL I AM HAPPY TO INFORM YOU THAT WE ARE OFFERING YOU A CONDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT!! I shouted!!! The thing just be like say I dey dream. I was like I neva even get house, I don get job. All the things the woman dey talk I no even hear, I was just too happy.

So my peeps, na so our tory be so far so. Na so God show say Na HIM be the REAL GOD oooo. Much as this is an entry level job, I am happy I can quickly have my CV updated with a Canadian Experience.

I pray we all have good stories to tell in this Canadian dream!!!

God is indeed good. I’m so happy for you. Congrats.

We’ll be landing in London too by God’s grace soon. I was even there in December for a previsit.

Could we connect? I’d appreciate some hints from you and your friends that received you

I’d be sendings you a PM. Please respond.

Thanks.

For emphasis purposes.

I had shared the reason why i suggested that we should also share the challenges we face in our job hunt to encourage ourselves and I know the backleash i got for that singular act. This same reason was given in our group mentorship programme today. If you could refresh your memory by going back to my testimony, i think it will only be fair that you also refresh your memory on the post i put up on sharing the good and bad sides of our experiences.

And then for a long time you will really need to be responding to my posts on the need for shared experiences because i will keep re-emphasizing that.I really have no apologies for that. Maybe that will teach you how to jump and pass posts that are not relevant to you (the job this and job that posts).

That said, Also my faith based narration of my experience is also something i cannot stop. If it bothers you that you are an ancestor in Canny Land and someone just landing gets a fantastic job i suggest you also deal with it.

Many a time i ask myself if it is worth it being here? But remembering that what i post can be beneficial to someone else, I cannot but continue to contribute in my little measures to make integration here easier for us just like i also throw questions here to guide me in my integration process.

@czaratwork, NOBODY on this thread said experiences that are challenging should not be shared. You chose to come to that conclusion all by yourself. Maybe you need to go back and read all the comments made about your post. You came at me because I said "hang in there" but you are here giving similar words of encouragement to Esughusughu. So it's obvious you chose to read meanings that did not exist from posts that only had positive things to say. I am tired of you dragging my moniker all over this thread on this issue. You may need a refresher course in reading and comprehension ma'am. This is the last I would say on this matter. Anything else, kindly argue with your ancestors please. I am tired.

If you dont care about peoples struggles then jump and pass. I care so much and that is why i try as much as i can to contribute my little quota. Not being boastful about it, i know a number of people i helped with the CPA conversion process. You have no right to shut anybody down here. If a post here that has to do with the subject matter does not appeal to you, the best you can do is to jump and pass it and not to be throwing stones or shutting people down.

If i remember clearly the person that opened this thread gave his reasons for opening it. If his reasons for opening it do not appeal to you, i suggest you open yours.

@vcole you remember i told you i have not shared anything to suggest your hang in there sentence. I told you i only recommended that we share not only the good experiences but also the bad ones. I also told you i encouraged someone on the phone with my experience.

I am really tired of going back and forth on this issue. You made your mistake by your words then and so i should not encourage someone because i corrected you?

This is the same reason why i almost did not make that suggestion knowing what befell the person that shared his/her experience on page 36 of this thread and how people came for him/her. But i said it is better i post it and face the consequences than i ignore it just to please the ancestors.

Trust me I can handle whatever hate speech that would come from it. Whether it is needing a refresher course or being Paranoid or the next ones to come, I counted my cost before making that post.

I am a very open person. I can share to the minutest details what i think will benefit someone else but when some people want to claim ancestors and control your postings, the essence of the thread is lost.

It will be wrong for people to come here and say someone has not made preparations before landing just because the person is not lucky to have gotten a job before or immediately after landing.

I am not supposed to go into the details of my preparations but if that will make some people feel better, I need to state it here that immediately i got my PR back home, i started the process of CPA conversion with the mindset that i will go into accounting career having gained that experience in my banking career. i spoke with some people who gave me leads to companies that hire accountants and i started applying right from home.

I am sure the same applies to everyone who had plans of relocating because some of us were communicating ourselves on CPA conversion. I am just apalled by the way we draw conclusions for others.

If it doesnt bother you about peoples struggles, give them the benefit of doubt that they have done their ground work well before moving. I see a lot of people here asking questions as soon as they get their PR and believe they are also preparing for their relocation.

You can believe whatever you want to believe if that makes you better. Like i said i was prepared for this.

There's a lot of preparation that goes into immigration. Unfortunately, so many times, you may be asking people that do not know any better. So many people went to Canada and suffered before they were able to settle down. Asking those people may not help you because they can only tell you what they know. Having access to reliable information is very important if you want to succeed in Canada. Canada is truly a land of opportunities and with God, nothing is impossible.

I am in Canada and I strongly recommend this site for new and intending immigrants www.immigrantcircle.com

They cover every aspect from immigration to pre-arrival and so many other things. Wish you all success

You're welcome. I moved to Canada with my family less than 2 yrs ago and we are integrating fine. I have come to realize the importance of information in Canada. You're as good as what you know. Apart from the site, I strongly advise anyone immigrating to Canada to register for a pre-arrival program. You can find out more on that site.

The Canadian government is doing so much to make it easy for new immigrants to settle in fast. You'll be amazed at the resources available so it's sad to hear that people are not finding it so easy especially when I know how industrious we Nigerians are.

One more thing, I have also been asked to find out if anyone would like to be a moderator in their forum. If you are interested, please inbox me. The owners are my friends so I'm going to be answering questions on their forum as well.

Mehn czaratwork, I shiver for folks that have to deal with you in real life. Heaven forbid they say something you don't like or you misunderstand, that person is in for it for the next 6-10 years. Coz you'll drag that ish to the ends of the earth.
For everyone sharing their miracle or struggle, you'll come and comment on "how powers that be" (I wonder who these people are anyway) shut you down. I know your type for church. Victim players. LET THE DAMN THING GO! Don't come back next week and comment again that you were shut down. It's juvenile.

Just a piece of information I thought to share: Most stores will at this time be disposing their winter stock at great discounts and you will get good bargains. For parents, you can anticipate what sizes your children will wear next winter and buy those winter materials now. Winter boots and jackets don't have to be an exact fit- can be 1 or 2 sizes bigger.
For adults, you will get long johns and thermals at great discounts.

For adult jackets, I will recommend Mark's Work Wear House. They have good stuff at decent prices. My winter jacket that I bought at less than $100 is five years old and still going strong.
