I have tried to checkmate them but all to no avail. Whenever I'm in the shop, I do checkmate them. But most times, I'm always out of the country doing business. Someone suggested getting a machine which can be used to issue receipt on any sales made but the problem is that I don't know it's functionality. There are ways to tackle this. First look for a progammer to design a database for you. All your goods and numbers of the goods will be recorded there in.
Then you start issuing receipt for goods being sold on daily bases, using this database, the commodity of goods sold at the end of the day must tally with what's left in the database. Yiu should hire a security man who would be check mating the receipt of items bought with everything customers has on his/her receipt.. Then stock counting should be done once in a week to check mate and balance account. Cctv also comes handy just in case.

This is actually a very interesting topic because I’m currently reading a book about psychology and business at the moment that addresses this issue.

According to this book, when it comes to honesty and human psychology, it is easier to prevent people from stealing at the beginning than fix the problem later. He conducted experiments on groups of people and found that when people were asked reminded of their moral obligation by reading the 10 commandments before the temptations, they stole less.

Also, if you prep the psychology so that they know that they have the feeling being watched and you tell them the consequences of stealing before they start, they will perform better.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Sack all the stealing cashiers. They are already corrupt and it is easier to start afresh than to fix a corrupt mind (don’t ask me what this means for our country.)

2. Rehire on a good salary that they can live on

3. Install CCTV cameras or dummy cameras, including ones facing the till. Tell staff that the camera images are backed to the cloud and that images are stored elsewhere and can be accessed by you in teatime on the internet even if you are abroad.

4. Sounds crazy but put a poster of Jesus face or the 10 commandments behind the till or cash register where only the cashiers can see.

5. Accept payments primarily by card and have 2 - 3 backup card machines. Ask your bank for Global Accelerex card machines because their engineers come out to fix them in 24 hours if faulty. There’s post here that covers getting a POS terminal in Nigeria: http://www.mrpepe.com/banking/how-to-get-a-pos-terminal-for-your-business-in-nigeria/

6. Employ someone to reconcile account each day and query staff on the day if any fraud is detected.

Please let us know how you get on!
This is good. Op take note.

I think the opposite. I feel it is better to let them know so knowledge can help them fight temptation before temptation arises
. Your opinion is fine, but its better they don't know so as to catch the thief and use him or her as an example ,so others can sit up. If they know, walahi, they will device another strategy.

You need to intall a competent sales management system at your store, that system will have every goods, stored in it by ID and whenever sales is made it reflects in the system..

Also the cctv camera is also a good idea..

If you are interested in getting a good sales system. Hit me up with the number in my siggy.

After catching the culprit red handed, what next? I have stopped giving business advice to friends because at the end of the day, they tell you, my sales girl is like a sister to me, if I deduct the 7k, how much will remain from her salary, etc. So they keep giving warning upon warnings that go unheeded.

When will you have time to watch CCTV footage, when would you have time to check goods sold against prices paid? So many sales people are stealing millions from businesses, even in the smallest shops.

I have thought of starting an auditing firm for small businesses but my friends prove we are not ready yet. How many businesses have a record of daily sales? We just sell and collect money, no tracking whatsoever.

Best bet is to keep your records straight and invite an external auditor regularly, because even the accountant or manager you intend to employ would connive with the sales staff.
Re: My Sales Boys/girls Steal From Me. by Sagay212: 1:50pm On Mar 17, 2018
you need to be keeping records. Whenever you get new stock, call both of them and do the count together. Show them the number of items and how much the counted items is expected to generate. Tell them to keep records and make them understand that if at anytime you count the items again and notice that the amount sold doesn't tally with money generated and the stock left, they will pay for it with their money.

let them take responsibility for the store like they own it. That way they'll think twice before stealing. they can even decide to resign if they notice that all loop holes are blocked and no money to steal.

1. Get the staff pocketless shirts and pocket less trousers for uniforms.

2. Get a locker outside the store and make sure it is in the security room. All staff must lock their items, bag, etc in the locker.

3. Security searches everyone before going into the store, and after closing to come pick up their bags.

The solution is simple...

Get a cash receipt machine and ensure notices are pasted all over the walls of the shop to ensure clients collect thier receipts. Then p.o.s is the next thing to obtain.

No doubt they will still steal cos these guys are ingenious. Then fire the next person who's caught stealing + small police wahala on his head.

Good luck

OP jst do everything listed below and also
1) hang snail and tortoise shells with red or black ribbons and mark some patterns with native chalk behind the store and under the cashier counter

2 use quran to swear in any new sales boy/girl

NnamdiN:
You can only minimize theft, it's almost impossible to eliminate completely.
Get a functional CCTV
As much as possible encourage POS
Monitor stock, make sure every pin is in the system (if you get this right, you would have succeeded to a large extent).
Make sure customers are issued electronic invoices, not the paper type. The person issuing the invoices must be different from the one receiving cash and their accounts must balance at the end of the day.
If possible barcode all your items, some malls install devices that alert them if any one tries to leave with an item that has not been processed.

like i said before use strong juju anybody wey steal go carry leprosy or enlarged scrotum (ibi size 12)

All you need is an automated inventory control system. You set it up and update whenever you add new stock. Each item is given a tagged when you stock up and it automatically removes tags from stock whenever a sale is made. You can access the system from anywhere and know exactly how much stock you have left and how many has been sold. If a tag has not been sold and it is not in the store, then it was stolen or sold and not reported. This way, you know exactly how much to deduct from their salaries or if youshould lock them up and throw the keys very far away.

Re: My Sales Boys/girls Steal From Me. by chukzyfcbb: 5:33pm On Mar 17, 2018
Its very very easy to checkmate stealing in a small scale business IF the products are products that stocks can easily be recorded.

If you sell cosmetics, take for example you have a total of 1000 items in the shop this march, so if at the end of march you have 900 products left. in the record sheets you should be able to count a total of 100 products sold in the record book. anything short of that means stealing.

Now you can monitor the record sheets in comparisons with the total stock in shop.

You can do this on a weekly,Monthly or quarterly asis depending on the size of your business.

Where it becomes quite difficult is if your
goods isn't something that's easily sizeable.
eg someone who sells Food stuffs in retail form.
A sales boy could sell 2cups of garri and pocket the money for the day and your Garri would still be huge because a 2cup loss won't be so noticeable. Its not easily recorded like someone selling a packaged product.

1) Start now and take the total number of goods in the shop.
2) For every sale, the description and quantity sold should be record.
3) Every week, monthly or quarterly do a total review of how much goods left your business and if it corresponds with how much sold.
4) Crosscheck the amount that was paid into the business account and see if it Tally's with the amount recorded so far in the sales book (sales boy are fond of selling a product, collect half of the money sold but document it as full payment in the sales book, which is why you must crosscheck how much they pay into the business account regularly) :-)
4) Finally, Prepare a consequence action for defaulters, a simple police arrest will put fear in the mind of your workers who have criminal tendencies.

#cheers

forget these talk about CCTV. a simple magnet placed by the side of a CCTV will render it useless. Don't ask me how I know this, if you do business in Idumota market or computer village or Alaba u will be wiser at a fast pace.

Follow the old way of taking stock inventory and always cross check it with the credit alerts/payment receipts of money paid into the account.

I know thier tricks at the back of my palm from selling in these areas (oshodi, alaba and Idumota)
