ok I am back again and here are my admission decisions( for now) for fall 2018
- University of Texas Austin (msc/Ph.D)- Rejected
-Renssaeler Poly (Direct Ph.D)- Accepted but no news on funding yet sha

I am still awaiting the rest and may God help us all.
Congratulations. That's a very good school. Does your department not have guaranteed funding for PhD students? That will be weird for a school like Rensselaer Poly.

Edit:This is a page front the graduate handbook. You are almost certainly assured of funding.

95% of the PhD students are funded at RPI. The first two years as teaching assistants and the subsequent years as graduate research assistants.

You need to improve your GRE scores by retaking the test. Also, spread your risk; apply to more medium ranked schools.

Please what's your profile? GPA? GRE? Publications? Did you get an advisor before application?
I trust it would help other aspirants of your course and uni.

Please I am in a dilemma here and I need your advice especially those who have gone through the application process before

I am a prospective Computer Science Fall 2019 applicant. Two of my papers have been accepted to an IEEE conference [No. 1 publisher in my field]. But the registration fees and expenses to attend the conference will set me back around 150k. Do you guys think it is worth the cost?

EDIT: To add, conference is in India so I will not be attending to reduce cost. Someone else will go on my behalf [an indian]. Also, I am on a very small budget. No sponsorship whatsoever, just personal savings

cc: Scholastica16, Quoran, Ponpon, anybody that can help

It is always worth it to publish your findings especially if you're planning for a PhD. It could also enhance your application though sometimes grad admissions team look at things differently. I encourage you to do so. Don't neglect any part of your application. It is good you have started early. Cheers.

Thanks for your update!!
I think you should take this offer if better prospects do not present themselves, except are willing to wait/try again.
I want to assume aside the $12k, your tuition would be paid for. This stipend should then be adequate.

Thank you for your advice. The fellowship means $12K will be deducted from my supposed tuition and I am expected to pay the rest out of pocket except I have funding from another source.

The thing is, the school is not one of the schools people talk much about in this thread, or I have not read much comments on the school here, so I seek advice on the school's rating and all or perhaps we have any member here currently running a program in the school or know someone that can advice me.

Thanks.

Congratulations bro...
The offer is not bad for a start.
I would have said you should jump on it if the fellowship had come with full tuition waiver.
However, if you can comfortably pay the remaining tuition after the deductions, then I will suggest you go ahead with it. Also seek out for further opportunities like TA or GA...
The truth is that, the US has so many quality schools that can give good graduate school experience. People have wrongly thought that only the schools mentioned here are the only credible ones. That's why I advise people to make their research themselves and come up with schools that fit their profile and interests.
People should not pick schools because their friend picked it or because it has been mentioned here overtime.
The US has more than 500 ranked colleges that offer graduate programmes... It's left for us to pick from them. You will be surprised at the amount of funding people could get from schools that have never been mentioned here.
That been said, I have actually heard about Claremont and think is Ok.

Let me ask; do you have pending decisions in the Fall 2018 admission cycle.

Okay that's very good.
I think you should stall a bit before accepting Claremont; then use this week to reach out to San Francisco and see where they are with your application.
Also you could ask Claremont to consider you for Fall 2018 if that can give you more funding package or more time and opportunity to seek out other sources of funding.
You are already making good progress in the process. Good news and offers attract more good news and offers too.
Good luck in your pursuit for success and career advancement.

From my understanding of BSC (Ed) Physics, your transcripts should bear more of Physics courses than Education courses. And that, is enough to get you admission into about 70% of US schools. There is almost no difference, your physics are the same as other BSC holders, just that yours was tailored towards teaching it. So, you are good to go. You can check schools like UTEP, ETSU, CLEVELAND ST UNI, UTA, MONTANA etc or use:

You have a good CGPA and a decent publication record. Also, you studied a well-funded course. Forget the education in the name. It is the USA, not Nigeria, where unnecessary discriminations occur. So yes, you can apply for Physics(MSc). Just research the programs you want to apply to and check out their GRE requirement but aim high. I will advise you to write TOEFL if you require funding. BTW, I think it is too late to shoot for fall 2018 unless you have plans to fund yourself. All the best.

I would just add to what others have said.

You may need to write the PGRE (Physics GRE) as well, as it will bolster your chances of full funding even at MSc. level.

With your CGPA, you can aim high and apply to 2 top schools then balance it with moderates because they usually have a higher chance of funding for obvious reasons. (I recommend College of Williams and Mary, Virginia, to be on your shortlist and UIUC). Look them up.

Although, you won't be judged so much on the Verbal and AWA, it will stand you out better if you do well in them.

As for your Q, I expect a full 170 from you. You should not be surprised at that, I know you are a mathematician. You should understand by now.

Look at fall 2019 more just like reDazey said. Most schools are done with their fall 2018 admits.

All the best.

Edit: Why not also consider direct PhDs? Many US programs consider MS/PhDs for 5 years. You can get in.

My Second Experience
I will start by congratulating everyone who has an admission. It is truly an arduous journey. More congratulations to those with funding and all the best to those still awaiting funding. I must add that it is not over till you hear from all your schools. Last year, I can recall a close friend who got an admit with full funding in May. Hope still dey!

I want to encourage someone here today with my story. Never give up on yourself and your dreams. When you plan to retry, find out the actions that failed you and learn to change your strategy for success. Finally, keep trying if you believe so much in a vision till you achieve it.

This is the period where most of us sit and wait with bated breath, hoping and praying that our admission with some sort of financial funding drops into our mailbox. I pray everyone gets their heart desires.

Last year, I was in a similar position. I felt dejected, some of us can relate to this emotion. Lots of admissions with no funding. I applied to combinations of (MSc and Ph.D.) in Statistics/Maths. Got some rejections and some acceptances( without funding). It was a terrible blow because I felt I had a good profile. (GPA 3.6/4(WES), GRE 318, TOEFL 109). However, I learned some important lessons. It is not always about one aspect of your profile. LORs and SOPs are very important.

Having been out of school for a while and working in an IT-intensive organization; I overlooked my IT skills which were going to be advantageous. I got some advice from several persons, I selected the ones I felt will work for me and dropped the rest. So for Fall 2018, I restrategized, applied to CS programs. Also, I realized I did not take some risk on my former school list (Sirriddy and Scholastica16 encouraged me to aim higher).

So this year, I reapplied to 5 Ph.D. programs
1. The University of Massachusetts, Amherst (pending)
2. The University of Utah (rejected)
3. Kansas State University(accepted with full funding)
4. The University of Alabama (accepted, no funding. I did not bother to ask for any.)
5. College of William and Mary(accepted with full funding, being considered for fellowship)

Also, to "avoid stories that touch", I applied to Georgia Southern (MSc Mathematics and I was accepted with a funded GTA position)

I thank God for the courage to try one more time and I pray that everyone finds a reason to believe in themselves and keep pushing.

Special thanks to the extraordinary persons that supported me throughout this journey; Sirriddy(you are just too much), divabiola, jaybiz007, Scholastica16, MsNas, dramaka). Thank you guys for being more than friends.
