Scholastica16:I was about to say the same thing. Nothing beats being funded by the school where you are assured of constant paycheck and other pecks. Graduate school is stressful enough without the additional burden of worrying about money. In addition, @STENON stop viewing your B.ed as an impediment where it can actually be an advantage. For all intents and purpose as regards this your admission journey you are a Physics Major. Graduate schools even encourage student to take some teaching courses and get teaching certification. This is were you should leverage education courses you have taken and teaching practise as part of your training so far. You can view the Education part as a minor. It is all about packaging without being dishonest. Once you get here, ( and I know you will if you really want it and put in the effort) you will cope just fine. |

Bro, just listen to advise and chill for fall 19. The top schools that someone like you should aim for had already concluded their admission by now. Besides, if you have to rush through GRE and TOEFL preparation, I doubt if you'd do so well in it. Also, estimated cost for a year in a good program will cost you about $50,000. Unless your sponsor is the federal government or an oil company, I'd advise against it. Physics is a well funded program and it won't be difficult for you to land a good deal with the right approach. For GRE, you should aim for 320 above. Don't waste your GPA. Letters of recommendation are not easy to get in Nigeria. Just chill and build the relationship now. 2019 begins immediately fall 18 peeps resumes this August. Focus on self development. If you ain't working, get a job. Preferably, take up one that'd prepare you for this next step either it's paid or not. Just get the experience by all means. Build your CV! PS: To really Excel in the GRE, please consider using Manhattan for Quant and the official guides. Also, take as many online full practice test as you can. You can soar like an eagle. Don't be desperate for a "chicken flight". I wish you the best in your endeavors sir. quote author=STENON post=66434869] 2019 is too far o, I must enter Yankee this year (lol), I have a sponsor that is willing to pay my tuition fees, I am trying my best for the quantitative part of GRE, I should be done with the maths section of the Barron textbook this week but the verbal na die!!. You are right with the above points sir. Please can we chat via whatsapp? I'v sent you a pm my brother[/quote] |

Good day Schoalrs!!!!! I've been following this thread for sometime now and I really appreciate the altruism of all the active members of this thread. I taught it time for me to join the league of erudite scholars by writing the 'almighty' GRE . I will be applying for #fall2019. I've been able to come up with some schools but I seriously need your input as regard my choices in terms of generosity of the schools when it comes to funding(must ) and the admission chances, since experience they say is the best teacher. Discipline Civil Engineering GPA - 3.51/4 Interest - Structural Engineering(PHD/MSc) TAMU University of Utah University of Arizona Michigan Tech Washington State University(They said GRE not reqd. Shd I still send the GRE scores )University of Iowa Oregon State University Any other suggestions will be highly welcomed.... |

Please do your research well. Michigan tech and Washington state are not straight forward in terms of funding. WSU usually require their engineering students resume first before they can be funded via TA. I got an RA after a long e-mail correspondence. I had to decline the offer for a better one. Michigan Tech is a stingy school. You can apply if their application is still free. You can also apply to George Washington University. They waived their application fee for some of us who attended their webinar in December. They usually require some form of programming skills for engineering students. Focus on getting a good GRE Quant score and you will be admitted. They have scholarship for masters degree students and funding for PhD students too. TAMUC is a good choice. I think they fund almost everyone admitted. I don't know about civil engineering but For Mechanical Engineering, those of us who have been admitted were funded. Make sure you contact the departments/schools about funding. Many don't fund as they claim. By the way, funding is becoming hard to get. The more schools you apply to, the better your chances. Cheers 4gunners: |

Matinoh:Hi Matinoh, good choices you have up there. Consider adding Industrial engineering to the list. Some departments have data science/ analytics/ Operations research as program tracks under Industrial engineering. Check out this link for some data science programs in USA/ Canada: https://www.kdnuggets.com/2017/11/best-masters-data-science-analytics-us-canada.html/2 For UK: Check out the ongoing PTDF UK scholarship, some selected programs offer Data science. Lastly, consider applying to a straight PhD for more assurance of funding. Seeing that you're coming from a different major, the challenge here is proving to the adcoms that you've got what it takes to be successful. Some of the reqs are Calculus I & II, Linear Algebra, Programming (Python or R), etc. Check program pages and ask the program contacts in your first mail if your background will be a problem (It shouldn't). All the best! |

Pampaya009:Consider sending scores to: One out of UT Austin and GATECH (based on your interests). UFlorida, UTK, WVU (IMO, this way you'll spread the risk) any other can be the 6th. This is based on my limited knowledge of the aforementioned schools, check gradcafe for admission/funding prospects. |

mfarad:Thanks alot for your response. As an engineering graduate, we did lots of Calculus and Linear algebra but with very basic programming. After a little digging, I no longer have intentions studying in the UK based on Residency issues.. Direct PhD ain't really bad but from what I gathered the duration is a Con. I learnt it takes more than 6yrs to complete the program ( don't know if it's true) and it's a major concern for me. Cheers.. |
| Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by seeker88(m): 7:34pm On Apr 08, 2018 |
Pampaya009:First, from those schools listed above, check their admission requirements to see which of them accept unofficial GRE scores for application review & admissions. I know RPI doesn’t require official GRE score from ETS in order to review your application...so for such school, don’t waste your money sending your GRE scores to them on exam day since you can always upload the unofficial score report to your application when the result becomes available on your profile. On the exam day, report your scores to schools that wouldn’t review your application without the official GRE straight from ETS.....by doing this, you’d save more on sending scores from ETS even after your test. Now, since your focus is direct PhD from bachelors with full funding, I would suggest you consider some average schools considering your profile. Schools like UT Austin and Gatech are top notch, and for direct admission to PhD with funding, your profile also has to be top notch. I think Gatech even has a min GPA that u must have in order to be considered for funding and your GPA is a bit less than that.....you can check the details from their site. I’d suggest you give Gatech or UT Austin a try, perhaps not both. However, you can apply to both if you have too much money for graduate school applications. RPI is private and they are quite selective. If I were you, I would have Montana State University on top of my list considering your focus. Also, West Virginia University, Mississippi State, and NJIT, then the very good universities too: UofFand UTK. You might also wanna throw one or two applications to the top notch schools.... Your list might look like this: Montana state university at bozeman West Virginia university Montgomery New Jersey institute of technology University of Mississippi University of Tennessee at Knoxville University of Florida University of Texas as Austin Georgia institute of Technology Check those schools and identify the ones that accept unofficial GRE score for application review and act accordingly. Disclaimer: This is only a suggestion. Your final choice depends wholly on you. I wish you all the best in your GRE. Don’t forget to update us after your GRE with your scores. |
