DRAMA AS I WAS WALKED OUT OF STAKEHOLDERS' MEETING AT ABUJA YESTERDAY By Dr Modestus Ezenwa:

For asking what appears to the officials of the Federal Ministry of Education a hate-filled question, I was asked to leave the venue of the 19th Stakeholders Meeting on Unity Schools/Colleges. The order came in such an uncharitable, direct and malevolent manner! It matched the same venom that gave vent to it. I was not allowed to pick up my files and say a few words to colleagues. I must leave, and leave immediately within split seconds.

What did I say?

Priscilla Ihuoma, the spokesman of the Minister has just announced what appeared to me, the information that brought me to Abuja. I was waiting for this announcement. I got it. I predicted the minister. She played into my hands. I had waited for an opportunity to share my thoughts on my hatred, opposition and stance against Unity Schools and the injustice in Nigerian education system. I missed the opportunity in 2016 and 2017 to present my views. Then, the meeting was a hushed one. This time around, we were told the meeting would drag to two days. And stakeholders who have views could easily share them as the Minister would entertain such.

Mrs Ihuoma, the announced the breakdown of the registrations for the 2018 Common Entrance Examinations. A total of 71, 294 young boys and girls were registered for the examination, a little shortfall from the 81,930 that registered in 2017. Lagos State hit the top with 24,465, FCT came next with 7, 699. Of course you know why? Igbos in Lagos and FCT are included! Then, she murmured a well rehearsed statement: Zamfara 28, Kebbi 50, Taraba 95. These three states came first from behind.
She went ahead to tell us the obvious: that the nation has 104 unity schools; that most of these unity schools dont get up to their carrying capacity; A budget, running into billions of naira goes into their maintenance each year and that The Unity Schools take up to 45% of the budgetary allocation of the Ministry of Education.

I was bitter. I was overtly burning with rage and hate. I couldn’t wait for the question and answer session. I did all I could to get hold of the microphone and finally, I got to the aisle, looked directly to the raised table and heaved a sigh of relief. I glanced through my notes and let loose the canons:

Why do we have 12 Unity Schools in the East where more than 50% of candidates come from? Mr Minister, why are kids from Igboland not given admission to those Unity schools that don’t get up to their quota/carrying capacity? Honorable Minister, can you explain why A young girl from Imo state, seeking admission into any of the country's 104 Federal Government Colleges (Unity Schools) must score 139 points out of a possible 300 to stand a chance of being taken. But her counterpart from Zamfara state only needs to guess two answers right?.Why does the young boy from Abia be denied admission even when he scores 198 while his counterpart from Gombe who merely wrote the examination ( but scored zero) is allowed to study in any unity school of his choice? Why do we have only 2 Igbo principals in the 105 Unity schools in Nigeria? Does this reflect intellectual preparedness or merely a reflection of the wishes of the leadership of the nation and that of the ministry? Why must the federal government set up a well funded advocacy team to persuade villagers, traditional rulers in North and clergy to encourage their citizens to send their wards to unity colleges while efforts are not made to accommodate thousands of kids from the East who are denied admission yearly. Our Minister, I hope you are aware that Last year, Nigeria’s four Federal Government Colleges did not produce a single candidate that scored five credits that included English and Mathematics, needed to gain admission into the university.

Hon Minister, i hope you are aware that, Federal Government Girls’ College, Bajoga (Gombe State); FGGC, Bauchi (Bauchi State); FGGC Gboko (Benue State), and the Federal Science and Technical College, Kafanchan (in Kaduna State) did not produce a single pupil with credits in English and Mathematics.

Honorable minister, I hope you are aware that In 2013, human rights lawyer and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, filed a suit at a Federal High Court in Lagos over admission inequality in Federal Government Colleges. The court declared as unconstitutional, the decades-long state-based, quota system admission into federal government colleges. John Tsoho, the trial Judge, in his ruling declared that the action of the Minister of Education in prescribing and applying different requirements for candidates seeking admission into unity schools is in violation of Section 42(1) of the 1999 Constitution. If this is the case, and definitely that is the case, Why, does the Minstry of Education under you refuse to adher to the court ruling?

Why does, Zamfara State, with 28 candidates for the 2018 common entrance examination have three Unity Schools, while my state of Imo has only two!!! Why do we have three Unity schools in Taraba ( that has only 95 students this year) while Enugu State has only two. Hon. Minister, I can go on and on to...

It was at this point that heavens was let loose. Stop there!!! Voices form the elevated table raged. It was amidst claps and jeers, heckles and clear disapproval from those whose benefits have been threatened; acclamation from those whose grievances have been let loose, that i was ordered and whisked away from the ICC, venue of the stakeholders meeting. No harm befell on me. I retired to my hotel room, got enough rest and made a Lagos-bound journey. I am sure, the organizers wouldn’t invite me to subsequent meetings. But who cares?

From Dr. Modestus Ezenwa.

While some of the concerns are valid, some can also be explained by "Affirmative action".

Why can someone in Zamfara who scored 28 be admitted? Because you want them to attend. You want it as a way to entice them

Affirmative action?

They are so uneducated that they need affirmative action to enter unity schools yet they dominate the political sphere of this country and dictate our national direction.

Does that seem right?
They need affirmative action to go to school, but they don't need affirmative action to enter politics.

The Zamfara boy who scored 28 must be a state hero.

Any ab0ki who can successfully fill his names and exam number in his exam sheet deserves a scholarship.

Bank tellers they cannot fill sef but they know the exact location of the heart, kidney, jugular, etc.

Fun fact: Every Hausa / Fulani boy above 14 years of age has murdered someone before.

The truth is people are becoming more aware politically. Things that didn't matter (or rather weren't given proper attention to) now matter..
Time will come when Nigeria would be begging for negotiations and they won't get it..
Our children are growing up very fast and they're seeing the glaring Injustices.
How can u talk of unity without equity?
Time shall tell..

grin

Mynd 44 according to the text, the dude from Zamfara actually scored 2! As in count one then two! The 28 was the total number of the pupil from zamfara.

"But her counterpart from Zamfara state only needs to guess two answers "

Ironically this lad who managed to score 2 points to gain admission will be given a contrasting message every Friday at the mosque that Boko is Haram.

The man also asked, " why will majority of these schools be left without getting filled to their capacity, when there are too many earger and intelligent Easterners who needs the spaces?

what beats my imagination is how with all these obvious hate and nepotism against a single tribe, if an NK arises tomorrow to demand refrendum , these same people will start attacking him!
What exactly do Nigeria want from igbos?

Who was the person or group of people who passed the unification decree again? What was(were) the motive(s) for that decree?

Yanga been dey sleep, trouble go wake..

During the last administration, out of the 104 unity colleges, these same group of people were principals in a total of 72 colleges. i.e beyond the colleges in their region. Despite the disquiet in the ministry of Education, thanks to Wike, they felt it was their right and never saw the injustice being done to other Nigerians. Still, Nobody came out crying and shouting like victimhood like these hate filled eternal cry babies.

Like the same thing that happened in the university college Ibadan when their kinsman filled every fillable position with his tribesmen, like the same thing Odua did in the aviation ministry during the last administration.. They are always blind and quiet when the injustice favours them, but shout to high heavens when others are perceived as advantaged.

If every body been dey him region the manage themselves like pre January 15, 1966, Nigeria for no dey here in the first place. Nonsense.

Can you argue with reasonable logic ?please do not shift the goal post.

The question is why set different cut off points for different geopolitical regions? Why not allow a level playing ground for the little lads to slug it out. amidst themselves?

Understand that even at no cutoff, only 28 pupil decided to turn up from the whole zamfara.

How about the schools that doesnt get to fill their carrying capacity? Why will Govt continue to make burgeous budgets fr seemingly empty schools when igbo lads are earger to fill up those spaces?

Was it the fault of the igbo lads that they have this natural gift of higher IQ which is engraved in their DNA.? A sane country would have pampered and encouraged the igbos to the long term benefit of everybody grin.

I see it that you saw nothing wrong in the inbalances in this quota system. Of course, you had to resort to your revisionist diatribe.
Is it out of place to fix other qualified kids from other regions in these other schools that dont get up to their carrying capacity? Granted, you gave the East fewer unity schools and makes admission tougher for them, yet you still denied them admission when there are empty spaces looking for someone to occupy.

The North were okay with how things were been ran in their region, including understanding their educational challenges. They were okay with the pace with which things progressed in their region until some greedy foreigners decided to invade and take advantage of them through the back door with the infamous unification decree.

Fortunately/Unfortunately (depending on where you stand), the situation turned out to favour them and they've successfully held the rest of the Nation hostage since then. My question now is, why is it that the same people who disrupted the regional arrangement and set up of the country (with the aim of overlording the rest of the nation) are always the first to cry when they feel cheated by the North?

Until they answer the question of why the unification decree was passed and the motive behind it, they'll keep screaming injustice, pretending they don't know how we got to this sorry state.

And no, I'm not shifting goal post. I'm just saying when ever an injustice favours them, they keep quiet, but scream the loudest when they don't have their way. Something they've always done. You know, hypocrisy.

How did we get to a stage when we talk about quota system? You need to answer this question first.

Secondly, you know So much about quota system, yet none of you complained when 72 of your tribes men were made principals out of a possible 104 slots.

The problem is that you lot always bury your heads in the sand when the situation favour you but are the first to scream injustice when you feel you are losing. Your hypocrisy stinks.

And No, the Eastern states, just like most states in Nigeria all have a minimum of two unity colleges. This information is verifiable So stop shouting like someone shortchanged.

I ask again, why did Aguiyi Ironsi and co make the unification decree? What were they looking for in the North? Until you answer these questions, suck whatever you get and shut up.

If all those questions are true, why walk him out without giving him answers?
Their reactions shows Nigeria is running on a circle. Going back to where we last begun.
But I'm not surprised, South Easterners are usually barking dogs. Ran at them and that's done.
He's walked out and he's contented with how he's walked out without answers and what he's spoken…. If only he knew those words are dead already.

Stop throwing unfounded and unsubstantiated figures and allegations around. It can only deceive the gullible. The bolded happened In this country and we did not hear you and your likes shout your usual way.

It is obvious you glory in injustice and what you are propounding is akin to throwing away the food in the midst a lot of hungry and malnourished children.

For someone who doesn't know just like most states in Nigeria, the Eastern states all have 2 Unity schools each and was already trying to weep up the sentiments of his kinsmen that they have fewer unity schools, how will you know that your tribes men took 72 slots out of a possible 104 during the last administration?

And two possible reasons why you didn't hear about it is because you choose not to see it as injustice to other Nigerian tribes because it favours you or simply because me and my likes didn't come to the media to cry like your trade mark. We simply waited and voted out your hero which I suggest you do too or shut up.

Nobody hates you lot. Get that into your head. Play the politics you started/introduced into Nigeria i.e winner takes all.

Fool, if you implemented decrees/policies that have stunted the transformation of any society over 50yrs ago, can't such policy/decree be changed a s a p for that society to continue progressing??.

Are you such a subhuman that you stop evolving??..

First, the Quota system was established prior to 1960 to give a sense of belonging to all the different Ethnic groups in Nigeria, this gave rise to the establishment of the Federal character commission in 1979,so what is the relationship between the quota system and the Igbos?
Secondly not all the Eastern States have 3 unity schools. Get your facts right.
