So, you’re expecting your bundle of joy and looking to give your baby and yourself the best healthcare possible. Hence, your decision to travel to America to have your baby. You heard Amina say that it cost her an arm, a leg and a cheekbone to fund her birth abroad and now you’re wondering if you should even bother with it. Relax, it’s not as bad as you think. We’ve put together a checklist of important things that you need to know if you’re planning to have your baby in the United States of America.

1. Have Enough Funds: This is pretty much self-explanatory but giving birth in America would cost you roughly around $10,000 or more. This is equivalent to N3.6 million.

2. Get or Renew your International Passport: If you don’t have an international passport, we advise that you get one. And if you do have and it has expired, you have to get it renewed in preparation of your visa application.

3. Hospitals: You will need to choose a hospital in the country where you wish to have your baby. You can choose a hospital depending on your budget, or proximity to friends and family members.

4. Make Accommodation Plans: You need to make hotel reservations when you are sure of the hospital and the state it is located in America. To help ease some financial burden, you can stay with family members or friends. You may just need to have some amount for feeding so you are not too much of a burden on them. This can be in the range of $500 for a month.

5. Purchase Ticket: Return tickets preferably. Remember that buying a ticket early can help you get better deals when you get them at cheap prices.

6. Apply for Visa: The best visa to apply for is the Medical Visa and this sometimes may prove to be quite the hurdle as the conditions for granting this visa is quite stringent. But, if you want to bypass all that stress and need proper guidance. It’s best you contact a birthing service agency, like Oasis Birth Services Nigeria.

7. Letter of Consent from your Doctor: You will need a letter from your doctor in Nigeria that says how far along you are in your pregnancy journey and also stating that you are fit to travel.

8. Baby Shopping Fund: You may decide to shop for your baby things in America. Although, we don’t exactly picture this as fun because you are most likely in your third trimester and the last thing you want to do is haul your heavy belly through Lagos market. There’s a better alternative though. Babybliss store is a one-stop baby store that offers the best and largest collection of varieties of baby products. Visit www.babybliss.com.ng to check them out.

9. Start all Documentation Process for your Baby Early: The first thing is to pursue the birth certificate, and then the social security number and yes, the blue passport! It is important to get this passport in time, as you will need to apply for your child’s Nigerian visa. This is because your baby is technically an American citizen and may need to apply for a Nigerian visa.

The Federal Government now imposes hefty fines on airlines so they don’t allow people who don’t have the right documents board the plane. Because of this, many airlines will absolutely not allow even a day-old infant travel without the right documents. So, pursue that visa oh.

10. Have a Folder of all your Receipts and Documentation: After you have successfully had your baby, and on your way back, you can be asked by immigration for these documents. Asides this reason, the documents may be requested by the visa officials when you apply for a renewal. You will want to demonstrate that all your medical bills were paid for and that you are not indebted to the United States government in any way.

There you have it. There’s a whole lot more to the process. If you really do not want to stress yourself over this and you also need advice and guidance, talk to us. We are in partnership with Oasis Birthing Services who have helped many mums successfully have their babies abroad. Interested? Give us a call on 09072478294.
