Owerri women are the worst set of people to marry from in Imo state yet they still talk down on mbaise people .

My uncle spent only 160k to marry from Afogbe in mbaise, Imo state this past January and she's a graduate, so where did you got your news that mbaise women are too expensive to marry from?
I'm not from Owerri, and yes Owerri women are promiscuous, won't even let my son marry from there. Same way my dad won't let me marry an Owerri man.

Bride prices in Igbo land are usually very small in 99% of villages here.

Don't ever judged a mans marriage culture with information u find online.

Afonjas are the ones posting all those fake lists online.

From Umudike -Umuahia, Abia state.

1. Dowry - 60 naira
2. Marriage List - when monetized is approximately 250 to 400k.
But this is subject to negotiations and diplomacy. Don't allow any yeye village uncle/elder to dupe you oh. You mustn't pay everything or satisfy all the requirements in the list. Sometimes, if the father- in-law is thoughtful and nice, he'll make everything easy for the intending groom. He won't allow the Umunna to have their way negatively.

N. B.: the Marriage List is not general, every clan or community or even kindred have their own specific list.

Hahaha. So close to mum's place. Umuopara in umuahia

But dad's yoruba though

My wife is from Abia (Isi Ala ngwa South LGA).
They will treat you as you come, that's if you appear to be rich and willing to spend, they'll chop you but if you meet your potential inlaws and tell them your condition, they'll play along with you. Marriage has no fixed price in Igbo land everything depends on how you play your card. Though they may give you a very long list of items to buy, just ignore some things and stand your grand, honestly you'll have your way. Always go with elders that can speak up.

Good Morning Lovely Family,

I come in peace and I wish to indulge your collective contribution to my search. There seems to be air of misconception filled with untrue ideologies on igbo custom of marriage and bride price--at least from the majority of non-igbos who wish to marry an igbo lady.

I do understand that igbos are of diverse customs, tribe and tradition, which stipulate different rules, requirements when it comes to issues of marrying a lady from such regions.

Several months ago, a particular thread hit front page which was created by blogger flirtykaren; I mean lailasblog.com. In that thread, an image of list of items that should be presented by the groom was captured. The reaction of readers to the said list or thread announced displeasure. Some could be heard saying that Igbos sell their daughters; others asked are they gold? Others said they will never marry an Igbo lady. It went on and on.

source: https://www.nairaland.com/3054077/2016-bride-price-umuahia-abia

The sad part about the above mentioned event in that thread is that over 100 blogs have copied same content, same image and thereby circulating what might not be true. I can tell you that that report might be doing more harm than good, beyond what we might imagine. How did I know, I did a google search for the keyword phrase :"Abia State Bride Price". What I saw was a circulation of flirtykaren's post. Some other guys might do a google search and will be greeted by same reportage, which could be detrimental to potential bride of igbo extract.

A certain section of the thread claimed that in their own custom, it is relatively cheap/ affordable to marry a from his/her own tribe. Another said that the list is lie and nothing like that exist in their place. This captured my reason for creating this thread. I would want us to give potential non igbo groom the right information. This could mean that flirtykaren, just like many bloggers in Nigeria, didn't do thorough research and investigation before reporting such thread.

Numerous threads have also been created on same topic which still caused uproar by non igbos while some still claim it is not expensive to marry from their region. Is that the case? Wouldn't be nice if you (those who claim it is not expensive) to educate us on how it is done with broken down procedures?

Are you from Imo State, Anambra State, Ebonyi State, Abia State, Enugu State? What part of these states are you from? Can you be kind and humble enough to educate us how traditional marriage is carried out in your tribe among this states? I want specifics according to how it is done village by village, clan by clan and not one that represent the entire Igbo tribe.

I decided to put this here because we have more married folks around here, as against the Culture section and since Nairaland is quickly indexed, this could serve as panacea or palliative in the future among blogs.

Please this is very important. Thank you for your time.

Op thank you for opening this topic. There has been a lot of misconceptions about bride price in Igbo land. Sometimes I wonder where people get the information they post online. I'm from ideato North LGA of IMO state. In my town, the bride price seems to be the cheapest. The suitor will be given a list after normal introduction which is done with just a bottle of schnapps or any wine . The items in the list cannot be more than 100k, usually between 50-70k. Then a goat is required for igba Ndu (covenant), the official pride price here is just N25.
However any other money you want to spend is at your own discretion, if you like give the family 100m, they will look for change, remove N25 and return your balance then, if you want them to keep the money, they will make it clear to you that the money is not a Bride price o. As for the celebration, you are the one to decide how you want it, even if you don't want to celebrate, is up to you and your woman.
Now, I understand that there's always some greedy and selfish family/ parents who will want to exploit the man especially when they see that you have the money. Also, some guys who have money, especially, these Malaysian guys and some other wwealthy men will go there to display they wealth and if you're in such a place and see the properties and goods they come with, you will think that it was demanded by the family. Bloggers will begin to post pictures without proper research.
I rep Izuogu na Iheme.
Pls let other South East States and other tribes say something about theirs now let's compare. Pls nobody should lie o.

IGNORANCE IS NOT AN EXCUSE. ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS NO MATTER HOW SILLY IT MAY SOUND.

BRIDE PRICE IS NOT THE SAME AS MARRIAGE RITES.

IN EVERY PART OF IGBOLAND, BRIDE PRICE RANGS FROM N10 - N30K

AT THE END OF THE DAY, DEPENDING ON THE FAMILY, YOUR IN-LAWS WILL TAKE ONLY A TINNY PART OF IT AND RETURN THE REST TO YOU.

FOR INSTANCE, WHEN I GAVE MY SISTER'S HAND IN MARRIAGE, OUR IN-LAWS RAISED 15K (AFTER THE NORMAL JOVIAL BACK AND FORTH ARGUMENT WHICH NORMALLY SPICYS UP THE WHOLE PROCESS). I TOOK JUST 1K FROM THE PLATE AND THEN GAVE THEM BACK THE REST. TELLING THEM THAT MY SISTER IS NOT FOR SALE AND THAT I AM BLESSING THEIR UNION WITH THE REMAINING 14K.

THE ONLY EXPENSIVE PART OF TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE IS THE RITES WHICH HAS TO BE DONE. WHY IT IS SO IS THAT IN IGBOLAND, IT IS THE ENTIRE KINDRED THAT OWNS A CHILD.

YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN OF IGBOLAND SHOULD START COMING BACK HOME, LEARN FIRST HAND. IF YOU ARE UP TO 25 YRS OF AGE, YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO BE COME A MEMBER OF UMUNNA. IT HAS IT BENEFITS.

YOUR UNCLES CAN'T BULLY YOU OR DRAG YOUR INHERITANCE SHOULD YOUR PARENTS DIE. THERE WILL BE PEOPLE WHO WOULD FIGHT FOR WHAT IS YOURS. IF YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED, YOU WOULD HAVE PEOPLE WHO WOULD ACCOMPANY YOU. THAT WAY YOUR IN-LAWS WILL BE REST ASSURED THAT THERE DAUGHTER IS SAFE.

THE LIST GOES ON.

I LEARNT ALL OF THIS THE HARD WAY WHEN I LOST MY DAD. THE PROCEDURE FOR THE BURIAL IS ANOTHER STORY OF ITS OWN.
