Look at the pictures of the wives of Yar'Adua and Buhari. Their heads were not covered. I saw an old picture of Sanusi's first wife also when they were still dating and her's was not covered too.
Those happened before the encroachment of political Islam in Nigeria. This new wave started around just 25 years ago. It was the case in many countries in the Middle East too. With this new wave, radicalism rose and is rising. Muslims started becoming more withdrawn from non-Muslims.
