There should be a proper tender and evaluation process for this contract involving at least 2 other suppliers. Vehicles should be evaluated on protection, mobility and price. Trials should be done on a test track and in the bush, not on paper. If it does well , buy 400 and standardise based on the platform. If it doesn't, go back to the drawing board and start over. There's no shame in failing on your first go. The SA defence industry could feild a Bn's worth of prototypes that never sold. Getting foreign expertise in to help out is essential if your getting started. Take look at what countries in the M.East like UAE and Qatar are doing to build up their local production. Lots of "White Papi's" walking around those companies BTW. They buy foreign designs/expertise and then slowly build their own capabilities. This is what Turkey has been doing in the last 15 years and now they have a massive and diverse industry that exports all over the world. There seems to be way too much procurement done on an ad hoc basis in Africa. You see examples of this everywhere, countries operate 4 or 5 systems that does the same job and then trying to deal with all the support and maintenance problems that goes with that. At the end of the day, it has to be about what works for the Nigerian soldier on the ground not national pride. It would sink your local industry if they end up having problems in the field after such a big buy. Henry240: |

61mech:I agree with most of what you have stated here, however Defence industries around the world cannot survive without their various home government support. Trials are currently being undertaken, as we speak there at least 3 units under-going various tests with the Nigerian army. The vehicle will do well as the professionals who built it have a combined 120 years in the industry. There are also foreign poached expertise from the likes of FNSS, BAE and BMC who work for the company. In my opinion, and irrespective of price, the Nigerian government should stick with the product in success and failure. That's the only way to build a sustainable defence industry. A country like Nigeria should not be buying all it's military hardware from abroad, it's not just a thing of pride but more so of national security.

61mech:If they have problems in the field, the company responsible will fix it. We've deployed tons of foreign vehicles that have not performed optimally, so why not try local? |
