Seeing how a private business is run has been an eye opener for me.
I work for a new establishment in ilorin and I am always aghast at the number of so called government officials we see monthly.
They are like ants trying to swallow up the nascent business.
From them demanding payment for water bills despite non existent water pipeline to our facility
To those demanding extra payment because our billboard has adverts on both faces
To ministries that couldn't get their shit together sending different personnels]to us every other month despite having resolved their issue the priviuos months

And then when I see the cost of power in running the place, I question the managers sanity in leaving the comfort of his blissful life abroad instead of coming to this hellhole. The sunk cost for power is mind boggling. He had to have solar, inverter, and the old bastards nepa just to get by.
From its inception, the establishment just barely breaks even.

That is the sad story of this country. They will never give anything to you but will scramble to grab everything off you like a band of cowboys killing off dreams in the process.
Go to civilized countries and see how the government gives tax cuts and soft loans to small businesses because they realized they are the ones that stimulate the economy and hereby increase the number of people employed in that economy.
But here our government and their thieving agencies sit down and daily device ways of stealing from the people.
Worse is you never get value for whatever you are being taxed for.

I work sea and anytime my ship is at jetty and I head to town for some relaxation or I head ho,it's always the usual stuff,darkness,potopoto roads,corporate and ordinary beggars,dust,area boys,inflation,...its just horrible.

Madam, sorry about your travails. The best way to run away from Tax man is to comply with Tax law, do your part so that you won't be at their mercy. This govt the parra for revenue collection.

This happens to all businesses in Nigeria . Just get a good accountant to sort it out for you. Now that VAIDS has even been extending. don't waste time. We were billed N3.5m on one of our sleeping companies. We eventually paid no more than . N250,000 including accountant's fees.

That was how these Firs people forced my friend from SA to shut down his business, everyday different bills.Some of them were even telling him how much he's making as if they were the ones patronizing him, the truth is in that shithole called Nigeria the rich would never want to see the poor survive. In a sensible well-organised country, you should not even have paid up to 80k on a sleeping/dormant company, wtf? Govt agencies specialise in extortion and pay lip service to MSME businesses.

Thank you! You have said it all. This is a thread, all those useless govt appointees that keep making noise about how govt supports MSMEs, should come and read. Useless people reciting hopeless speeches....may thunder fire them, without mercy!

I can relate with this post as I have an uncle who owns a hotel and is about to shut it down, unfortunately, a lot of you commenting do not own businesses that is why you are making assumptions.

You can pay your tax every month of the year, that doesn't stop FIRS or LIRS coming up with their own figures after their inspection (yes they come and inspect businesses). So people who are not in the know let me tell you who you have to contend with if you want to attempt to start a business in hospitality.

I can't give exact figures but this is some of the figurea we have to contend with

Local Government - 500,000 a year for an entertainment license, road, water
FIRS - 500,000 approx
LIRS - 500,000 approx
Environmental and Health - Levy - 550,000
Lawma - 220,000
Lassa - (I can't remember)
NEPA - 12M a year: The light is terrible but what can you do.
Disel - 8.6 M a year
Tourism - (can't remember this amount
Land Use - (definitely over a million)

All of these agencies will come uninvited for their inspection and all will threaten to close down your business. All of these agencies are justified in a reputable environment however they never use concrete figures but will use arbitrary figures based on assumptions of how well they think you should be doing.

An example:
They told my uncle he was owing about 4Million for Payee. However when we checked their calculations we found the figures we gave them for our payments had been doctored, In their figures, it showed we had multiple cleaners earning about 5Million naira a month (for a hotel in Nigeria how ). We are still contesting this figure.

Where is the profit going to come from look at the NEPA bill
