Nigeria's population growth is not a worry, but the real issue is: can the government put in place policies and structures to optimize such population growth?

We have enough land and resources to cater up to five hundred million people; that is, if the right policies are put in place. With Northern Nigerian about 100 years culturally backward, compared to the South, population growth cannot be checked in Nigeria.

Northerners are uncomfortable with the idea of birthing two - three children. The more affluent amongst them have nothing less than 25 children. I don't understand those people. I wonder what commonalities Lugard perceived in North/South cultures that made him think grouping two distinct ways of life was a good idea.

Population control MUST now surely be part of development strategy.

It Is self evident that we do no have resources, the means, the technologies, the infrastructure, the industrial capacity, the economy, the markets, the economic/political alliances required to sustain a high birth rate and prosper the consequencial large population.

What is the point of having so many children who grow to become poor, malnourished, unemployed and severely frustrated adults?

If our population growth rate is not checkmated,am afraid;Robert mathus theory will come into play, where the struggle for space and resources will make the fittest eat up the weak.

I personally don't believe that our growth rate is that high. We tend to over inflate everything in Nigeria. Our birth right is high but our death rate is also very high. People die like flies in Nigeria year in year out. Nigeria's population is no where near 195 million. At most our population will be like 140 million or a little less.

Population growth can be turned into wealth if only we have creative leaders. China is a reference point.
Even China had to forecfully curb their population growth. Resources are not unlimited. Now in China, we have thousands working in sweatshops in inhumane conditions to make barely enough money to keep themselves alive. Of course, their government was able to give the country a facelift, bringing 600 million people out of poverty in 30 years (thanks to a rigid communist regime that was focused on the end goal) but will that work in Nigeria?

Quantity over quality.

Take some samples of NL--mediocres all over.

This is an environmental disaster.

Now I understand why Buhari is in support of the depopulation agenda of BH masquerading as herdsmen.

It is not about about sex but competition. Our northern brothers are in a rush to over the south in population hence they marry many wives and refuse birth control. They hope to acheive their born to rule mentality by population explosion

Funny considering how hypocritical Nigerians are when it comes to issues about sex and the likes.

I'm waiting to see the government that'd have 'liver' to enforce mandatory birth control. Just try to imagine the negative things Nigerians would say about them. Being a leader in a country like Nigeria is an unpleasant job. Any change that'll come in this country has to come from the people first- a complete overhaul of our mindsets and rewiring of the average Nigerian's brain to think progressively.

Maybe a benevolent dictator would work.

But dont worry. Nature will soon start controlling our population but that will be disastrous.

Nigeria leads the world in terms of population growth rate. We are driving the increase in the number of people on the planet more than any other country in terms of percentage growth rate.

Our research (see table below from Internetworldstats) shows that of all the top 10 countries in the world with the highest population, Nigeria has the highest growth rate of 58% between years 2000-2018 which is quite astonishing.

A similar study by the Spectator Index gives Nigeria a higher score when it comes to population growth over the last 20 years.

Population growth, past twenty years.

Country Population Growth Rate in the last 20 Years

Nigeria 72%
Saudi Arabia 69%
Egypt 55%
Pakistan 54%
India 34%
Indonesia 31%
South Africa 31%
Turkey 29%
Mexico 26%
Canada 22%
United States 18%
UK 13%
China 12%
France 11%
South Korea 11%

This shows 2 things primarily:

1. Nigerians are prolific when it comes to sex and,

2. Family planning is not something most Nigerians care about.

While countries like Poland, Japan and Germany seem on the other end of the spectrum of population growth rate over the last 2 decades, with -2%, 0% and 1% respectively, they are faring better with less social upheaval and higher standards of living compared to Nigeria.

A lot of our problems relating to poverty and underdevelopment can be traced to poor planning and population control. There is little improvement in infrastructure, health and education to meet the increasing population. Already, Nigeria’s middle belt is a battleground between herdsmen and farmers clashing over scarce fertile land and water.

Nigeria’s huge population can be an asset but it takes proper control and planning to make this happen. Uncontrolled population growth portends a bleak future if nothing is done now.

A country with the highest emigration rate and a very high mortality rate can never be the fastest growing counry (Population wise) on the world.

It's only wen Nigeria counts her population with Biometric technology that Nigerian Banks used to create BVN number, Then we can know what our real population Is.

This population growth rate gives my goosebump everytime. Our population is just growing uncontrollably, the last time I checked, 44% of Nigerians are less than 15years and more than 50% are less than 20years, making more than half of d population unproductive, infact more than half d populace are leeches.

The north is d region with high level of procreation n I think they should encourage education for d girl-child (infact, education for all) and they should discourage child-bride without religious sentiments.

This is what their leaders ought to do but.......

Why won't it be? When Nigerians FORK and FORK any how? Why won't it be when people pressure others into marriage as they see it as accomplishment.

It is sad that we do not know how damaging this growth and population is to this country. I think it is high time we enact the 1 or 2 kids per parent.
