You haven't seen anything yet. Their leaders have discouraged them from western education. All they know is Hausa. The worst part of it is that they are not progressive at all in all level. They don't like mixing up with other tribes at least to learn one or two things from them rather stick to their archaic method of doing things.
For this naija, I have zero it, na God hand we dey ooo

angry Rubbish. Is English their language? How many British can speak Hausa language? Their religion encourages teachings in Arabic. This is why we condemn the removal of the Islamic inscriptions on the centenary notes. It's a symbol of Arabic pride and a motivation for northern Muslims who doesn't like to speak English
Don't justify this. It's our lingua franca

i experience something similar in Anambra state during my service year too, where about 90% of SS3 students demands I teach them mathematics in their local dialect (IGBO) . My take on this is that the whole educational system in Nigeria need an Absolute overhaul. education in the south are just a bit okay compare to the north.

What do you use in communicating?
Learning English language doesn't stop you from speaking your language. Have you for once wonder why the Yorubas are more enlighten yet their culture is preserved? Many Yoruba are Muslims yet many still communicate in English language and Arabic.

This is a normal thing in every state in Nigeria. Ask those that went to primary & secondary schools in the village
It is not normal. Many states don't do that. They teach in English language while you learn your local dialect at home

ShitHead:
This one is not claiming o. During my service year, I reported to the school principal that the students were not paying attention to my class, they couldn't even understand me. She said that I should use Hausa to teach them. How I wan learn that one? She went ahead to say; "after all, in China, they use Chinese...why can't we be proud of our language" yen yen yen.

It didn't go down well with us and the school. When we were leaving for service, they called us for a sentforth party and served us, each with a
sachet of caparison.

Yes it is worse in the north , but every part of this country have the same problem.
There are primary 6 pupils in Lagos who cant make a single sentence in any other language outside yoruba. The east is not better.

ovadozes:
There is nothing really wrong in using the mother tongue to teach English in as much as it is properly translated. While growing up in the east one of the ways our teachers used to teach us English language was to write Igbo words and then translate them in English and vice versa, it makes it easier for the pupil to understand. So if they can write down words in Hausa and translate properly, I don't see anything wrong with that.

I was just about saying something similar, the practice of teaching in the local lingua is not unusual neither is it unique to the North.

That said, it still doesn't mean a teacher should base solely on the native language for teaching, speak English to them...it's western education. But if you can, mix it up.

Though theirs is worse ...... I believe in interior villages in the south west you may have to infuse Yoruba to teach in school

So how do we motivate the other ethnicities who don't want to speak English? How much space should be created on the naira note for equity sake? Deep down I want to believe you're lucid. smiley

u spoke my mind...modern Nigerian youth are really suffering from low self esteem

Kenyans and other east Africa nations prefer Swahili to English.

I served in Ibadan, most of the students were comfortable learning maths in yoruba
