I can't believe I can remember these wrestlers. Wrestling was prime entertainment in the 70s and 80s. I had a crush on Mighty Igor then.

1. Mighty Igor

2. Mill Mascaras

3. Ted Mckencie

4. Ox Baker

They were very popular in the late 70s and early 80s. Wresling is a must-watch then every Monday night from 10pm to 12 midnight. That was when Electricity was usually constant and consistent. Good old days......life was not complicated unlike nowadays! No be so senior citizens in the house?

I saw most of the wrestlers when they came to Nigeria, some of them were lodged at Kilo hotels in Surulere and freely walked the streets..

Remembered seeing also Eric the red, Luis Martinez (Ariba).. they were two cowboys back then, Ted McKenzie and d other guy (can't remember is name now)..

@naptu you remember that song that starts the show, there's a local way we use to sing it back then..

Mill mascara,
Mighty Igor,
Argentina Apollo

There were also those 2 dwarfs ... Wow, wrestling was close to real back then..

I can still remember that day in 1984. I had to attend a party that I really didn't want to go to. Luckily I got home by 7 and I immediately went to the TV. The 7 o'clock news was on and that's how I heard that the Mighty Igor had lost. I was shocked.

These four wrestlers were once among the most famous wrestlers on Nigerian television. Three of them actually fought in Nigeria at different times. Can you name them.

1) Here they are in cartoon form.

2) These are live pictures of the same wrestlers.

Back to memory lane. I remember all of them.them.
Mighty Igor, the most strongest man in the world as I tot then.

We used to sing the theme song of the wrestling show of the Mighty Igor era like-

'Oloro ni Igor, ta lo ran e wa ja'

'Oloro ni Igor, ta lo ran e wa ja'

cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy

I loved the Vonerich Brothers back then, especially David Vonerich.

I wonder when we'll have major wrestling promotions in Nigeria again. So many wrestlers from all over the world came to fight in Nigeria in the 1970s, '80s and early 1990s.

The Mighty Igor, Mil Mascaras, Ox Baker and Kamala The Ugandan Giant from the US

Johnny Kwango and Gentleman Chris Adams from the UK

Ray Apollon from Trinidad and Tobago

The Great Mulumba from Zaire (now Congo)

Etc.

I remember when Mulumba came to Nigeria. I loved watching wrestling with certain older people at that time. Their facial expressions when someone was hit or when blood was oozing out of someone were hilarious.

I had been ill, so my doctor came to check up on me. It was a Saturday so Sports Spectacular was on TV and they were showing wrestling from the National Stadium.

Then the Great Mulumba came into the arena holding a white chicken. He danced round the ring with the chicken and then beheaded the chicken with his teeth. The look on my doctor's face was priceless.

Some people called him 'Superfly Sandoka' while others called him 'Superfly SANUKA'. He was a very popular wrestler in the late 70's and 80's. I guess the Nigerian Fuji artiste called 'Fuji Sandoka' got his name from the wrestler. smiley smiley smiley smiley smiley

Sandokan was also the name of a very popular adventure movie and series that was shown in the '70s and early '80s, hence the confusion.

I don't thinking holding wrestling competitions in Nigeria, even with foreign stars attending, will be exciting again. Nigerians are now very exposed and won't find live wrestling interesting or exciting. You know the way we are, Bruv cool cool cool cool cool cool cool.

I remember the Great Mulumba and his fetish way of doing things. He always spilled the blood of Cockrels and Chickens before fighting anyone. He was a very big man and he looked fierce. I remember all the wrestlers you mentioned. But I loved the Von Erich Brothers the most. There used to be one other wrestler like that, I don't think you mentioned him. He was a arch rival of the Von Erich Brothers. He had his own squad and they were mortal enemies of the Von Erichs. Their duels were always interesting cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy.

I did. That's the Fabulous Freebirds.

Michael Hayes (the man you are referring to)

Terry Gordy

And Buddy Roberts.

The Freebirds vs the Von Erichs was always a major crowd puller.

Yes, Michael Hayes smiley smiley smiley. I hated him back then as he was the enemy of my favourite wrestling family, the Von Erichs. Michael Hayes was very cocky and boasted a lot. I remember him now.
