Thank you for this post. I had to share it cos you acknowledge the positives in the technology in addition to stating how to make it safer.
With the few modifications you mentioned that technology can be made safer and world class.
The technology is not a new one. sad It is quite old and highly popular in Western Europe and the US. The gas used to fuel cars, trucks and buses in Europe, is known as autogas. The gas can either be CNG or LPG. Both have different specs, properties, valves etc, and cylinders for storage. The cylinder for CNG is 3x thicker than the one used for LPG, because CNG is stored at higher pressures than LPG.

If you own a petrol vehicle, please just get an accredited technician to carry out the conversion for you using a standardised conversion kit, and then make sure you can locate the right gas fuelling source for your vehicle. In Lagos, there are more stations selling LPG autogas, than CNG autogas. undecided

F.R.S.C. won't see this hazard and deal with them accordingly. In Nigeria it's all about making money without minding safety.

It's definitely LPG as there is no coolant gas that can time 4 stroke engine ..for him to even lie about that has shows his piping can never even be trusted ..thats a fireball waiting to happen bro
But the refuelling dispenser clearly states CNG. shocked Green Gas Ltd is known for selling CNG, not LPG. But those white tanks inside the danfo, do not look like CNG tanks, but LPG tanks. sad If the drivers are buying and storing CNG into LPG tanks, it is highly risky. Both gases have different specs. One major difference is that CNG is stored at pressures that can be more than 10x that of LPG. LPG pressure is less than 2 MPa whilst CNG is 20 – 25 MPa.

This much higher pressure of CNG requires a much heavier and more expensive cylinder or tank.

Been that way since 1759. But dangerous though. Cuz these crazy drivers manouver the buses with so much craze and it could lead to an explosion. Please avoid buses with gas as fuel source. They usually hide them under seats

Time bomb, This is so sad, see where poverty has led us, we are constantly retrogressing

How can this be safe for passengers, we no longer care for life, Bussineses are set out only for profit

A gas in a moving passenger vehicle is definitely not safe

AutoReportNG:
Nigerians are innovative, smart and hardworking set of people.

AutoReportNG was in Mowe-Ibafo a city in Ogun state and we decided to board a bus at Ketu, before boarding the bus we noticed some strange object like a gas tank under the seat but just as Lagos drivers can do anything to their vehicles, we overlook it as part of those things. The commercial bus decided to stop at a "Filling Station" to top up his tank, but this one seems to be irregular as the nozzle and the way it was sold was quite different from the regular petrol station. That was when the curiosity in us began to manifest, we asked the driver what's going on why is he buying gas instead of buying petrol, the driver just smiled.

We were able to engage the driver as we journey along the trip and the driver was kind enough to explain the modalities, according to him, when the problem of fuel and scarcity is about making them go out of business, they think of a smart way to operate and also think of spending less. According to our findings, the vehicle uses an injector engine and with a gas of 900 naira, the driver said he can go from Lagos to Mowe (through and fro) 3 times even when there is traffic. That is very very cheap and cost effective! Imagine how much he will be making in a day just using gas only.

Let's do the maths a bit, a full bus take 15 passengers and they charged 200 per passenger ((200 * 15) * 2) that is in a trip (through and fro), he will make 6000 naira, imagine going 3 times, that is 18000 using 900 naira gas. Imagine if he goes 10 times in a day, you can imagine.

Wisdom is profitable to direct!

These are some of the pictures we were able to gather...

Youre smiling while staring at life in prison or even execution should the worst happen.

Dont just think profit, think safety! There are many ideas that make economic sense but are not safe so are rejected during planning.
Re: Lagos Danfo Buses Now Use Gas Instead Of Petrol - Photos by Nobody: 7:13am On May 02, 2018
CNG is safe to use, cheaper too..

The innovation is quite old ,I fear for the position of the cylinder in the buses ..best location is the boot

@ Bolded. It doesn't make sense if it's a coolant. huh

A coolant or anti-freeze is a liquefied chemical (bluish or greenish in color) that's usually put into the radiator of a car in the cool/cold regions. It regulates the engine's temperature and doesn't freeze during winter UNLIKE water that freezes.

In temperate and hot climate regions like 9ja, they use water instead of coolant which makes absolute sense.

So, I disagree with the purpose of the gas being used. It's just another disaster waiting to happen. These danfo guys are mostly ignorant and illiterates. They risk innocent pple's lives all in the name of 'hustling'. angry undecided huh
see ur mouth... can an illiterate come up with such idea huh even our semi illiterate president with NEPA certificate can never be this innovative ... abeg free the guys joor bad news has became part of us, if the bomb explode make person die nah, after all Fulani

How can it be a coolant and yet drive an engine? The vehicle has a combustion chamber with spark plugs. It originally used fuel or diesel which produces fire or spark that causes locomotion. Even ancient trains that used water had to heat it to boiling temperature.
If such "coolant gas" existes its technology can not be in a rickety molue.
What is there is the normal cooking gas (which is cool at room temperature) but very volatile and combustible.
you

I am very sad for you to say this is cooking gas!!!, This compressed natural gas, it's not Cooking gas Oga, this gas doesn't smell, it has no odour, if you don't know you don't know, just ask questions, and for nairalanders this gas has been used in so many countries to power their vehicles, 90 % of vehicles in Pakistan use CNG th fact is that it is more efficient than petrol and even drives your engine faster than petrol. I know in Edo state there are over 4 of this gas station that sell CNG most transporters within the city use it.

Well, if he is using CNG which is a biogas composed of CH4, it's safe. I think he just need to make the cylinder steady with anti roll and the likes. The only cause for alarm, I think is if the car rams into or got rammed into by other vehicles.
