I would implore us to look beyond banning substances. First we should understand that guys will always find alternatives to codeine just to get high. Will the Government then continue to ban and deny people who genuinely need those drugs access to them?

Hmmm. Your story took me down memory lane. In my uni days, my girlfriend complained of cough so I went and but her benelyn with codeine cough syrup. I didn't tell her what amount to take before I went out. I never knew she took a couple of spoons and she felt the cough was not abating so she guzzled almost everything. After all the thing dey sweet. I came home and met her sleeping. At a point I was uncomfortable with the long hours of sleep and I had to force her awake. No be small wahala before she fit wake. I warn the living daylight out of her that day.

Oh, and I thought I was the only light brain codine puts to sleep.

Why then are people addicted to it? they just love the long sleep? I don't understand.

Before responding, please try to understand the entire context in which a post is made. Someone said that youths in the Southwest and Southeast do not give a shiit about codeine, and I responded that they don't because they use marijuana and cocaine. In Lagos Island, there are several joints, where cocaine is traded like water. Even with certain seedy areas in the high brow estates, you can find coke, if you know where to look. So read well before you post! Try not to forget your understanding on your pillow....next time.

Is cocaine as addictive as Heroin? Cocaine addicts go to rehab and fare much better than crack addicts hence it's being very expensive... I have seen what crack can do.. I have seen families torn apart and people behave like animals because of crack... it's starts with ingesting codeine and from there it goes downhill.. I see people who are addicted and are helpless, homeless and debased.. trust me you can't compare crack addiction to marijuana or coke.

Hahahha bro... I was only passing by ni. To be candid, consuming codine isn't harmful provided it is within the required dosage. Anything beyond that is an abuse. well...maybe the part where he said he consumed almost half of the entire content points out that fact. Let's overlook him being urged by someone to continue with the intake more than he should because whatever the results is is in line with what he bargained for.
He may have lied about taking it, and if he did, that's his biz. I was only lending my voice to the fact that gross abuse of it could indeed make him high, and also that the uproar isn't necessary because they cannot feign ignorance of the fact that the NORTHERNERS (Mostly youths) has over the years depended heavily on this drug

I was in the north on 3 occasions and I can tell you boldly, the consumption of codine didn't just start, I dont know when it did actually but it was already on by 2005 when i served and visited there

The some guy was actually my friend. have seen him a couple of times sipping codeine so I thought due to his love for induced chilled room temperature, cold pays him frequent visits as a next door neighbor.

Now, when he advised syrup, I was like is that not for babies? when I got the syrup and used the cap to take two shots,which was sweet and the guy asked me to sipp more, I did it for two things:

For its sweetness and cos I wanted the cough to disappear before Monday morning.

I guzzled down to half of the bottle. the distance remaining after taking two caps and mid bottle wasn't that pronounced so I thought it a lil safer alas,I was wrong.

I took my time to explain this part cos of that crazy chigozie whose blood is rioting.

Stop arguing blindly, and grow a brain. My post had absolutely nothing to do with heroin being less addictive than cocaine, or any sort of crap. My post was a response to someone who was comparing the prevalence of codeine addicts in the North, with those in the Southwest and Southeast. I never compared cocaine to crack or to marijuana, so quit being dumb. I have never used crack, cocaine or heroin...so am sorry, do not direct such dumb questions to me, because they make you sound clueless and unintelligent. If you want to score cheap points with your misguided remarks, kindly look elsewhere!

Codeine is an opioid just like morphine but with lesser strength. It suppresses cough centrally hence it is used as cough medicine. It is addictive

Aisha you are always reacting , the addiction of northern youths can't be solved by banning codine, rather they will only succeed in making codine very expensive because, the producers and marketers will capitalize on it and sell it at an exorbitant prices, second, new people will move into the trade as it will pay more , they will bribe officials and still sell it at 10x the original price... take a good look at tokunbo cars before the import duty was increased, Toyota corolla used to be 1.3m now sells at 2.3m and still they are importing and bringing it in without duty paid... this is Nigeria, this is Africa..

For me, this is both economic and cultural (maybe religious). Every one wants to get high sometime. No harm. In the south, we drink our alcohol. In the North, they say it is sinful. They still want to get high so they do. I guess drinking codeine is not sinful. The Northern Muslims need to relax on the rules of their culture / religion. Even Saudi Arabia is doing that already.
