It's really a pity, that's an opportunity so many persons are looking for.
We all should learn to seek for orientation before embarking on any journey in/of life.
Good morning Nairalanders, please don't be a lazy youth.

when most people want 2 travel, they consult these so called consultants who advise u 2 falsify ur personal data cos they feel there are certain things d embassy people are looking. Unfortunately, such things backfire cause every info u give them is what is used 2 assess u in whatever interaction u have with them.

If they established a business intent, they will deport her also on account of the weavon along.

Impounding items or fining travelers is for bringing in excess or prohibited items that don’t contradict the intent if their visa....if a Green Card holder had brought in same amount of weavon, they would had impound them and fine her or fine her, have her pay import duties and release the items back to her, because a Green Card visa supports business ventures.

If she had told the interviewing officer is Lagos that, by the way...she is a hair dresser and intent to make small small change while in the US from hair dressing, she would not had been given a visa, because that intent contradicts a student visa; same thing the immigration agent would have established, they will politely tell her to go back to Nigeria and apply for business visa.
yeah sure... So then, why did she not just get deported n asked to apply for a business visa but instead bagged a ban?

she should have been smart about it, like telling them its for personal use since she's new and would want to save money on weaves.
It prohibited, they wouldn't listen to her.Weaves are sold in America. We Nigerians should learn to stop being greed.

I think am slightly confused by the story

From experiences you don't pick your bags till after immigration unless something major is flagged in your bags then your taking to secondary inspection and thoroughly checked and questioned

Am not sure scans will flag weaves in a bag and the quick question at immigration won't have asked about the weaves without her having her bags

If bags are flagged after she has been stamped in - then that would probably be a fine / confiscating the items

So am not really understanding how the immigration knew what was in her bags and linked it to her interview without a full second inspection

My thoughts and I could be wrong

Village people at work. grin
This has nothing to do with village people.
It is purely a case of trying to use one stone to kill two birds.
Usually, the two birds will be missed!
And that exactly what happens here.

First, she fill in her application that she has no friends or family there.

Again, her friends ask her to bring them

That's dishonesty.

Who knows, maybe they would have considered her if she has told them the truth that she intends to sell those weaves to support her schooling there.

We should learn to be honest.
It is the truth that will set us free and not lies.

check the last part. The immigration officer had to refer back to her application where she said she had no Friends or family after which she was made to turn back based on that lie. If it was the weaves, they simply would have impounded them.
You don't seem to get it sir.
It was not one reason over the other. It was both.
One suspicious act( bringing commercial goods to earn illegal income) led to the further questioning, which exposed another lie , which now aroused the suspicion that she was coming to the US under a false pretense.

Don't be confused.
The story is about what got her deported and not about the point at which the weaves was spotted.

All the processes must have been followed.
Remember that the problem is not that she carries weave. The real problem is that the weave was too much.

I don’t get this story. I would expect her to check in her luggage which would be screened by custom. First In Nigeria and then in America. I can agree the Nigerian customs may act naive or nonchalant after you bribe them. However, when you get to America, you first pass immigration before custom. Customs are only interested in the content of your bags and drugs. Immigration screens you in without looking at your content. It is when you have highly prohibited items that customs would arrest you. Otherwise, they seize the item and tell you to go. Custom is not immigration.

Exactly my thoughts - this is someone who travels. Once you pass immigration, you are in. Customs are only interested in the content of your bag and not to send people away. If you have contrabands or carry excessive cash, they seize it. Except you are a terrorist or drug baron of which immigration will spot you and keep you aside or you are instantly arrested by customs because you have luggage that can put America residents at risk.

No you are wrong sir. She already has a visa. However, the immigration officer has the final say. If she has a student visa, she would be asked to present proof and maybe she wasn’t able to convince the immigration officer why he/she should grant her entry. All immigration officers can spool out your application and they do this when you hand over your passport to them. Hence, they are confirming your response to what they have on their system.

If you have ever used a connecting flight, you will notice that the immigration officer of the country you land first will not talk to you, but provide you with information about where you are suppose to go board your flight to your final destination. Infact, they tend to separate passengers on connecting flight from passengers who are actually landing.

In all these situations, you are never with your checked in luggages even your hand luggage is not screened by immigration, but by customs.

I still doubt this story very well.

I don't know is new about the above post and how it makes me wrong.

A person with a student Visa coming to the US carrying commercial goods.
That's a red flag that warranted further questioning and probing. Upon further probing , she contradicted what was on her visa application. Red flag 2.

Putting red flag 1 and red flag together = Red Card = Refusal for entry .
Simple.

I really don't know what you are arguing about ?

She lied about the friend that was a higher offense with more consequences.

Had it been she was truthful and said, the weapons are hers and states that, she intent to make small more on the side why studying, the officer would have been more lenient and just deny her entry and depending on the officer and his/her mood, they would have in addition advised her to go seek a business visa.

not because of weaves. She lied in her application and she got her lie busted. In her application, she said she has no friends in d US, then she tells immigration her friends asked her to bring them. Automatically if they find out about that lie that means your original motive to them might be based on falsehood.

She got deported because of the weaves

The weaves brought about the lie

No weaves

No lie (possibly)
