My problem is with your school not even the course. Hopefully, they don't go on strike and you miss out on job openings not because you are not qualified, but due to your age.

There's nothing wrong with studying physics, trust me, you can be anything you desire to be. Just have an open mindset and don't restrict yourself to few industries like the fellow who has a CGPA of 4.46 in mathematics and telling me he does not like bank jobs.

Learn hard core programming skills. Your discipline will make you very analytical, so you have an advantage there. The best jobs are usually analytical and requires persons with good numerical skills.

If you aspire to study abroad, now is the time to develop your CGPA. When you are done, put in for the GRE. A folk like you should not score less than 160 in the quant section, at least I don't expect such.

Most importantly, make a very good grade. Preferably a first class. This cannot be overemphasised further. Don't tell you cannot oh. Year one is the best time to make it possible.

P.S. Don't cross to engineering. Unless specified, there's no role or position that an engineer can apply for that a physicist cannot. Besides, age ain't on your side. I don't advise folks your age to study anything engineering related in a public university.
Take to this advice and you are good to fly.

Hi Op. I can understand your concern for the future. Let me give you my own thoughts:

Have you given a thought about Robotics and artificial intelligence?
Before you graduate, learn c, c++ and python programming languages. Know them well enough. Go into Robotics and AI. That's what is shaking the world, and it will continue to shake the world.
Check for online course like in udemy or pluralsight. If you have some cash go for online paid courses on the programming languages above and robotics.

Have a positive mental attitude.

Have you checked the latest job vacancies' specifications? I doubt you have.

And yes, 19 years is too old to study any 5 year discipline in a public university.

Don't fall into the trap of bad advisers. Below are things you should be thinking about:

1. Nigeria generally has a bad educational sector. Graduating with an Engineering degree does not necessarily mean you'd be a great Engineer.
2. The physical sciences like Maths, Physics and Chemistry can give you competitive advantage if you know how to navigate the terrain.
3. The most important thing is that you are in Year 1 - use that to your advantage and since you love Physics, push to get the best grade possible. A first class in Physics opens several doors for you. A strong 2:1 with skills like coding can also do wonders.
4. With a great grade, you will be able to fight for jobs in almost any sector in Nigeria. But more important, you would have the opportunity of getting full ride scholarship to American and Canadian Universities. That should be your goal. And I mean it.
5. In your spare time, pick a programming language. Be ahead of your peers. See if you can even do some of your assignments using such a programming language. The best software developers I know are Maths and Physics graduates. This is another career path that you can excel in. And no one would discriminate against you for not having a computer science degree.

Life is what you make of it. Also great to have mentors who can tell you the truth about the work place and not beer palour discussions. People told me back then that a Maths degree would only open doors to teaching career. It was the greatest lie from the pit of hell.

Again, do your utmost best in school. Get curious. Learn complementary skills. Browse the Internet for the advances in Physics from top Universities around the world. Go to Coursera.org and see Physics courses you can do online that challenges what they teach you in Lautech. And you are on the way to a great life.

If you are lucky, you may work with a telecom company. I have a family friend that studied physics with electronics, he works with a telcom company. Physics has advantages just like engineering.

I am a physics graduate and I can understand how you currently feel considering I was in your position some years ago. Physics a great course of study but also highly demanding. Like mentioned by some people in this thread, you need to get a very high CGPA in whatever course of study to even stand a chance in the oversaturated job market in Nigeria.

To get good job opportunities, I will advice you aim for a 4.0 and above CGPA, this places you at an advantage and also considering your age (you should be graduating and finished service by the time you clock 24, hence you stand a better chance at applying for most graduate trainee positions (I am currently a mgt consultant in one of the big four and I came in through this process).

If your interest is in continuing the part of Physics, then you will need to further to MSc/PhD and the career path in Nigeria is mostly lecturing/teaching. Research is underfunded and underdeveloped in Nigeria, your best bet is going into the academia.

Also IT is currently booming in Nigeria, you may also continue to develop relevant IT skills and take professional certifications in this line to increase your prospects when you graduate.

But for now, I suggest you concentrate in your academics and aim to graduate with excellent grades. All the best in your studies.

You can go to your app stores and download some apps like SoloLearn, which will give you basics about programming languages. Subscribe on Cousera and some other site, but you still need laptop, but you can start using your mobile phone/tablet.

I am shocked about how so-called Nigerian youths are spilling out poo out of their mouths. If you don't know anything about physics or you are just a dumb ass person who couldn't make the best out of the course, then I advice you keep quiet, rather than condemn the course and discourage the OP. OP, for your own good, build a career around that physics. As you go deeper, there a lot of opportunities there and it's left to you to build an exciting career in physics. I am saying this with full confidence, Physics is one of the best courses you can ever think of.

If you think the likes of engineering, medicine, law, accounting, etc will make you rich in life, then you must have lost it. Many of these courses we know or hear of mostly are overhyped. That is why you see even our so-called graduates are clueless and jobless because they thought the name of the course is what will fetch them a job. I am not condemning any course but you have to understand that the world is changing. You need to know what is selling in the outside world. I will leave a final word of advice for the OP, In anything you do or anywhere you find yourself, always be the best and make the best out of it.

I wish you all the best in life.

With physics you must have a focus in terms of your specialisation and its economic importance.

Those graduates that are caught out never looked ahead whilst they were undergraduates.

Physics usually would encompass - electronics, geophysics, astronomy, meteorology etc.
You must know your specialisation inside out.

In the modern world, regardless of your interests, you must take programming and scripting as additional skills - C++, Java, Python, BASH, MATLAB etc.
E.g. C++, BASH and MATLAB.

You cannot escape it. The earlier you start the better for you.

No food for lazy man and you must obsess over your future.

You would lose friends along the way. You would lose them when you are pauperized in any case.

Be focused.

Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
Na man you be

Good morning.
My name is Adeshina Waliyu, a 100 level student(lautech ogbomosho). There is a matter I have been worrying about, due to fear, I have fall in love with my phone searching for info about the issue. And nairaland is one of the site that I always tend to, to know about what I don't know because I believe there are many talented people and experienced people that can put me through.

I have read many topics on this nairaland that relate to the issue that's bothering me yet I still feel like I haven't see what I need. May be it's because most of the topic I read were posted like 4 to 5 years ago, sorry to say I feel like Nigeria then is different from today's Nigeria.

The issue that is bothering me, that makes me need the counsel or advice of people is about the course I was given.
I's a pre degree student 2015/2016, I chose Civil Engineering but unfortunately I scored 255 in Pre degree and 245 in jamb, so I was given Pure and Applied Physics.
Though at that time I was discouraged but later I got over it (Since physics is my best subject). Then I decided to study physics but getting to 100 level, what am hearing from people around me and my brothers is that I should change my course.. What they are telling me is that physics is among the best course in the world
but not here in Nigeria. They said it's better to cross to Engineering.
Though am just a 19 year old boy but I think it's better to start thinking about my future......
So I have been in a dilemma since because my decision will have Great impact to my future.
I can't make a rash decision. That's why I decided to hear from people that will tell me what I don't know.
Please is it true that the hope for science student especially physics graduates in time of job in this Nigeria is not much . I know life is unpredictable and we should follow our instinct. But it is better to know more.
I will be very grateful if you can spare some of your time to give your opinion..
guy study it well for now...jst knw what you are doing. your destiny might be in somewhere else

You need a system preferably a laptop or desktop.

Even your phone can be a platform for coding if you really want it to.

I always say there is no excuse for any young Nigerian today. Information is at your finger tip.

You can collaborate with people around the world.

There are various repositories for all subject matter and most of them are free.

As a graduate Physicist, here are the industries you will be needed, even before you advanced for post graduate studies-(M.sc & PhD)

1. Robotic & Artificial Intelligence Industries.

Countries you need apply to after graduation are:
U.S, South Africa, Germany and Bahrain or Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia.

2. Bio-technology sector
Countries: Brazil, Tanzania, UK, USE...

3. Uranium processing centers
Countries: Niger Republic, Lebanon, Krgystan, Egypt

4. Archaeologists also work with Physicists
Countries: Italy, Central Middle East & Sudan

5. Oil & Gas sectors especially modular technology
Countries: Major oil producing & exporting countries

6. And many more sectors!

7. Major advise to you: START SAVING RIGHT FROM
NOW. Your profession demands relocation outside
of Nigeria, prior to graduation.

8. Chances exist in Nigeria too, though politicisation
makes dreams trim and thin.

9. Start thinking Abroad from now! Your field thrives
there. Complete your studies and FLY OUT!

10.JOIN AS MANY UNDER GRADUATE overseas
membership of your Physicist Unions. MAKE
FRIENDS. Moreso get use to your sense of
REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY.

11.Whilst at school, your best friends should be from
GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS DEPTS.

The sky is not your limit. If PHYSICS isn't lucrative, it
wouldn't be studies at Tertiary level.

12.ALBERT EINSTEIN STOPPED SECOND WORLD WAR
WITH HIS KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICS. Great man he
was.
